Wine and Dine 2015

If my goal is 1:45 1/2, about what time should I be trying to achieve for my proof of time 10k? My PR (not official) is 46:18, if I hit that should I be good?

If he runs a 10 min/mile pace, he'll be beyond frustrated starting in the last corral. He needs to get a proof of time submitted to get him up to where he should be.

I can relate to the not being able to find anything close by in the summer time. The latest certified 10k nearby us (45 minutes away) is April 25th and then nothing again until November. :crazy2: Apparently no one wants to run in the Florida heat and humidity.

Is anything that's chip timed and put on by a website that hosts lots of races certified?

Definitely check that link I posted a page back and search your entire state. When I looked at a different usatf search page mine didn't come up! But via that link I found mine + a ton of others in Ohio that were certified a long time ago and still are valid. So do that first. Other than that...we think so?? RD isn't very detailed in what they want, even when I emailed to inquire, but my guess is that if it is chip timed and detailed results posted online, they are probably fine with it. I don't see them calling all these random races to find out specifics.

Nope! I am from Arkansas too and most of the races in NW Arkansas are done by May!
Man I find it amazing that you guys have such trouble finding races I'm in Georgia and there are always a ton of races to choose from all year long

I'm signed up for a 10k in April and one in June and hoping to work on speed between now and then so hopefully I'll have new 10k PRs to submit. Someone mentioned something about a penalty for submitting a 10k time instead of a half time. Can someone explain that to me? Does my 10k pace need to be substantially better than my half pace to make it worth submitting a 10k time over a half marathon time?

As far as costumes, my husband and I are talking about doing the 5k as Perry the Platypus and Doofenshmirtz. I think I can easily fashion running clothes/hat that will look like Perry but I'll have to figure out how to make a running shirt look like a lab coat for my husband...

I did the Tower of Terror 10 miler as Vanellope and I might just use the same outfit for the half.

I'm waiting on one new race in my area for June to see if it is certified. Other than that, there is nothing until the fall. Ugh! It's a trail run, so I don't know if that will make a difference in my pace. I know the area well, as it's where we walk our dogs sometimes.

How bad will it be starting in the last corral if my pace is around 11-12 min/mile? I currently do between 12-13 min/mile with some hills where I run so I'm thinking i'll be a little better by November. I just started running last September and did a virtual 10K and my Garmin had it at 1:19. I'm not looking to PR, just have a good time and finish. lol Also I don't plan on stopping for any pictures. Any advice other than get to the front of the corral?

I did 11-12 for PHM. I was in corral K and they went all the way back to I think O? After initially getting past the starting line it starts to thin a bit, but as soon as we hit the MK entrance gates, and the TTC, and the back streets to enter MK, any of those areas, it was crowded. I often found myself essentially jogging in place. A few times I gave up and walked. lol. And it was similar when we entered EP for the finish as well (I was doing 10-11/pace up until the last 2 miles and with crowding and the overpasses it dropped to 12!). That said, PHM is a big race (25k), but it sounds like W&D is growing this year (I was told 20k by Active, but nothing official).

TOT follows a similar course as W&D and crowding was much less of an issue. I can't remember my corral for that, but it was also towards the far middle. But, TOT only had something like 12k runners.

It is not the end of the world to be in the last corral, lots of people in the same boat. But, you will be crowded and you will likely have some trouble really getting into your pace. I will say that @PrincessV mentioned if there are a lot of runners with no POT you may even end up in a slightly earlier corral - and that was definitely the case for me. I wouldn't count on that one though. Especially since you don't want photos and just want to run through, a POT would be your best bet even if it is not a great one.

I run "with" my husband. I run about a minute faster per mile pace than he does. He keeps me slower on the long runs which is good for me because I have a tendency to go out too fast. At home on long runs, I circle back for him if I get too far ahead. We did W&D last year, and we did well together, probably because course congestion slowed me down (I dropped back to be in his corral) until about mile 6. Then I would "wait" (i.e., walk) at the water stations until he caught me up. We did that until we were on the path between HS and the Boardwalk, and I told him, I just have to go on, because it is hard to run at a pace that isn't yours. He ended up really not far behind me, maybe a two or three minutes? We wanted to run the whole race, but I think the rain bothered him more than it did him.

We had a good experience even though we were at a different pace. We hung together most of the way, but I got to finish on my stride, which was really cool. Then, because we stayed together, he was right there behind me. He was thrilled because I pushed him and he was ahead of his pace. On the other hand, I was about 9 minutes slower, but who cares? We had a great time together, mostly.

Great story - we do the same thing at home running as a family we have 3 different paces and I circle around quite a bit so we can stay together ;) I also am guilty of the positive split syndrome....

It is just the opposite up here in NH. :) The bulk of the races start around April-May and go until Nov-Dec. It gets hot and humid in the summer, but if we skipped the summer, we'd have no season at all! :)

I am 95% sure that when we leave for CA for Tink in May that there will still be snow on the ground here. We still have about 2-2.5 feet on the ground right now.

I have a few options within 5-10 miles of me for maybe getting a better time, although at the minimum I should at least have my Tink time if the 10K's don't work out. I am planning to do a large/popular one a couple towns over on June 13, and there's another on June 20 in the next town over if for some reason the big one doesn't work out the week before. Then I have one in my town on July 26.

I'm not aware of any sort of penalty for submitting a 10K PoT - that's all I've ever used and I've been properly placed. If you have both a half and a 10K, just try them both when the PoT link comes out: you'll see right away what estimated finish time each gives you, then just go with the better of the two.

Honestly, it'll be rough if you want to actually go your speed. For sure you'd want to start at the front of the corral to get ahead of the slower folks, but you'll still have the corrals ahead of you that will be going slower, too. I'd really try to find a race you can run for PoT.

Great, thanks! I didn't know you could test out the times to see what the projected finish time is. That will make it easy :) Does anyone know how the corrals are assigned for the 5k? Is it based on the pace you entered when registering?

On McMillan if you can get under a 47 min 10K you should be good to go for slightly sub 1:45 - but you never know with trackshack .

Thank you for your perspective and encouragement. :goodvibes It seems like the majority of our races around here are either 5k's or half marathons/marathons and I am just not ready for a half yet. I'm hoping the local one I found is certified. They are boasting the course is designed by a local running champion so who knows. lol I guess if I can't find one by August I'll just have to settle for last corral and hope for the best. I would love to have a decent time to use for the Glass slipper in February though.

It's not a "penalty" its a calculated fade because you should be able to hold a faster pace for a 10K than for a 1/2. Yes they definitely applied one every time I submitted a 10K time. It's not that a 10K is a bad thing just know that your 10K pace may be 11 min miles but your faded 1/2 pace may be 11:30.

OKAY so I'm not even sure who I found this for anymore

But for the person looking for a race in Arkansas

Hey I found one chipped with online results in Arkansas (not sure if this is so far you're better off going to another state or not) http://www.cancerchallenge.com/Events/Run_Walk.htm
It's June 13th.

Also http://www.runningintheusa.com/Race...ndDate=12-31-2015&Special=10K&State=AR&Page=1 is a better link for finding races.

Thanks for the links! That Cancer Challenge is actually 4 hours away from me, but I think there are a couple of 10Ks on the other link that are less than 2 hours! I am doing the Capital City Classic on April 4th for sure (already registered), but maybe if I do more I will be able to increase my time. Plus just the experience of the races and for training. Thanks!

Ahh... that makes sense as my 10k pace is faster than my half pace. I understand that they would want to compensate for that to place people accurately.
