Wine and Dine 2015

I'm doing a terrible job with training right now. I was up to 6 miles at the 4th of July but have only been able to run a handful of times since then. I'm hoping to get in at least a few runs in the 10 days and then life settles down a little. Hopefully I can get into a good routine before work picks up again the end of August. The only thing saving me is that I walk a lot for work. Hopefully that will tide me over until I can run consistently.
My training has been a bit hit or miss lately too. I went on a short trip last week which caused me to miss a couple runs in the training plan, and then I was lazy when I got back and missed a couple more. I have done 2 runs this week though, including one this afternoon since the weather was so nice, so I'm starting to get back into it.

Ok. How often do you all buy new running sneakers? What is your favorite brand/kind/style? How much do you spend approximately on a new pair?

Too much. :o I have a shoe problem. :o

Right now I am running in the Altra Olympus, the previous model. They retail for $135, but I got my current pair for $55 on clearance. I had mainly gotten them because they were on such super sale and I wanted to see if I liked running in Altras. My plan originally was, if I liked them, to then give the Paradigms or the Torins a try, but instead I just picked up another pair of Olympus for $65, also on clearance. They have about 85 miles on them right now. I'll start rotating the newer pair in probably in September or October and use those for the race.

I went through a lot of shoes over the past year trying to find a pair I liked to run in, most bought as previous models on sale. I have picky tastes aesthetically and a semi-difficult to fit foot. I need a ladies wide, and a lot of models either don't come in wide, or they only offer wide in like the one boring color while all the cute colors are for people without fat feet. :D

Last summer/fall I was running in the New Balance 1080v3's, but I didn't really love them. I switched to the Asics Nimbus 15's to give them a try when I started training for Tink in January. But they were too small and I kept bruising my toes on my longer runs. I had read poor reviews of the 16's, so I got a pair of 17's about a month and a half before Tink and got my Altras at the same time, but I didn't want to start transitioning to the Altras until Tink was over due to their zero-drop nature. I used the Nimbus 17's through Tink and then that was the last run I did in them. I found them to be too squashy for my tastes. They feel like heaven walking around for long periods of time, though, so now they are my walking shoes. :) I started running in my Altras as soon as I got back from Tink and that's what I've been running in since. They aren't the greatest looking shoes shape wise, but I mostly like the colors, and the shoe runs wide due to the way it is shaped, so I don't have to worry about whether or not I can get it in wide width. :)

I've been absent from this thread for awhile. Just caught up on 20 pages. lol. W&D this year will be Half number 11 for the year including Dopey from January and Pixie Dust Challenge in May. I have 2 halfs in October 2 weeks prior to W&D. With 2 more scheduled afterwards. I'm looking forward to adding the W&D 5k and Half medals to RD collection for the year. I'll be bringing my 10 RD medals with me for some post race photos. Also my DW and I are already signed up for PDC 2016. Race Anniversary and all. :)

So what is everyone doing for costumes?
I'll be representing Half Fanatics for W&D. So HF shirt and running kilt.

I keep seeing all of these "in training for x race" shirts for the other RunDisney events, but I don't recall seeing any for purchase for Wine & Dine. Did I just miss it? Why is W&D left out of the fun?
At Princess in 2013 I bought a generic "Run Disney Training" tech shirt with Mickey running on it. No year or specific race. I love that shirt. Wish there were more of them.

Most shoes have a mileage rating on them. My Asics GT-2000 and Mizunos Inspires have had 350 mile ratings. Previously my Brooks Ravennas have about a 400 mile rating. So it all depends on how many miles you run to how fast the recommended replacement time frame is. I keep 2 pairs in rotation. The shoes I bought this week will end up being my 5k shoes for W&D. And I'll be buying another pair early October that I use for the W&D half and probably through the end of the year. Although I have a Double Double in December (5k+1/2 back to back two days in a row) so another pair is in my foreseeable future. lol.

I normally find out how my local running store prices the shoes, then check Amazon or Zapatos. End of season or end of shoe version sales are great. Generally sales happen at the end of the year. Brooks and Mizuno release new versions of their shoes in January. So sales on the old version tend to be pretty good. And depending on the brand, they sometimes offer discounts on their website. Pricing around $100-$135 a pair is normal.

I buy new shoes once or twice a year. I stock up when the model I like goes on sale (at a race expo, local store, or online) and buy three or four pairs at a time. I get about 350-400 miles out of each pair, and begin rotating in a new pair when the current pair hits about 250 miles.

I haven't been running long enough to replace mine but I bough Brooke's Glycerins for about $85 but I had a coupon so I think they were $100 or so. I have a fairly high arch and found that they work well for me. There are people who have higher arches though who find them not padded enough. It's all personal but everyone in my family seems to fit a Brooke's even if the model is different.

Also check Running Warehouse (runningwarehouse.com) for good deals on sale shoes and lots of gear. They also have a code on their FB page for 15% off any sale shoes (any of the ones whose prices end in .88).

I keep track of how much mileage is on my current pair of shoes in a Google Doc...once I get to about 350 I start paying extra attention to how my shoes feel and once I start to feel like they might be getting shot, they're done.

My shoes retail for about $120 new...normally my local running store gives me about 10% off, I think just because they know I'm a good customer. I also try to take advantage if I see them at a good price online (i.e. when a new model is coming out and they're trying to get ride of the current model) or at an expo.

This is what I need to work on on race day. I tend to go out too fast and then drag really badly at the end. I end up going slower than my training pace overall. I don't know if it's the crash after the adrendaline rush of the start wears off or if I just need more training and I'll naturally stick to my own pace. Today I had a good run. Did speed interval training and it wasn't too bad. :)

It might be a little of both. For that race, I definitely ended up slowing down those last 2 miles compared to the leading 2.5, but then on the same level, overall I shaved about 6 minutes off my total 10k time. I think had I not trained for it (I was much much better about running 3x a week and sticking to 'the plan' then b/c it wasn't so hot and I wasn't as busy at work) it would have whipped me worse than it did. I ended up doing like Miranda said, I ran for like the first 7 minutes, walked for a minute, ran until the first water station, walked through that, then ran another 7 or so minutes. That got me up to about mile 2. By mile 3.5 to 4, I could no longer maintain my scheduled intervals, I found I had to walk more. So I shortened them to something like 2 run/1 walk and did that right up until the last half mile. I think I ran the last half but I definately sprinted the last quarter.

I always blow my intervals at the start of the race too. :) I feel dumb stopping to walk 2 min into the race. ;) My last 5K I didn't end up stopping until what should have been my 3rd walk break (so, 7 min in).

Me too!! I felt dumb having to stop to walk 3 minutes in so just kept running. My body wasn't prepared for that- I had trained to stick to my intervals so well that I almost didn't need my Garmin to tell me my body just kinda knew- and so I really blew it in those first few miles. Now when I train, I will throw in some longer intervals to make sure if that happens again it won't wreck my stamina. After I'm warmed up, I'm almost up to running for 8 minutes straight. I'd love to be able to say I could run a race without stopping one day, but I'm not sure it's going to happen any time soon.

UGH. I hate that hill. I was hoping wine and dine didnt take it! I need to find an old course map and get an idea but it sounds similar to TOT I guess? That is a good point about Osceola being easier to pass on. I didnt get a 10k in time since the last one I could find was in June and I wasnt ready, so I had to submit my PHM time where I stopped for photos a lot. I should be placed in I or J now, though my pace aligns more in the 2:15 finish range. Oh well. I will save my surge for when I hit Osceola I guess!

I booked my flight yesterday through Frontiers crazy sale. I had to pay $49.99 to join their "discount den" but then I had access to flights for $19 each way! For two of us it only cost $125 total including the fee. Soooo...I extended our trip a day to leave Wed morning now so on Tues night I can drink my mmhop ale while listening to mmmbop! And still be there Friday morning to hit the expo at opening. Now I have to decide on a hotel to add the last night. Since we leave at 6:30am for the flight, I am not really wanting to add a night on Tues at the BC when we would still have access to the resort that last night anyways since it would be check out day. I may book a value and when Epcot closes just walk back and pick up our bags at BC and call a taxi or Uber to the cheaper hotel for the night.

So excited!

Wow! What a great price for your flights!!! Great news that you can stay an extra day as well and get to the Expo on Friday. We are also going to be able to hit the Expo on Friday, so I'm excited to get there early. For the marathon weekends when we go, it's always been later when we get there and things are pretty picked over.

The hill of dooms are really just on ramps to the various roads around Disney.

They suck at least if you live in Florida and train where its flat.

We have a lot of hills here and our normal 4 mile route has several in it, so the hills in Florida (aka on ramps) have never given me too much trouble. But, I can see how if you are used to running on flat routes all the time how those would be challenging. Especially since it comes toward the end of the race. Well, at least it does in the marathon route.

I'm totally flaky about when I buy new shoes. I don't track my mileage on them at all even though I should. I run in minimalist shoes, so they don't usually get as many miles as some other shoes. Mostly, I just run in them until I feel like they don't feel as good as they used to and then I buy a new pair. I usually have a couple of shoes in rotation at any given time.

I ran exclusively in Saucony Kinvaras and just this year tried Topo Fli-Lytes because I was having trouble with bruised toenails and wanted to try a wider toe box. I really love them and haven't noticed any problems with my toenails yet. The longest I've gone in them has been 12 miles, so we will see if I end up pushing my mileage up further how I fare, but so far they are great. They only have two choices in colors right now which is kinda a bummer since I like to have color choices, but I can live with that if it saves my toenails. :)

I track mileage on my shoes mainly only because Strava and Garmin Connect make it easy. :) I can assign shoes to my activities and then they add up the mileage for me to keep track.

I don't mind doing it for the half... at least at Disney, there were so many people already walking that I didn't feel weird. And I mostly didn't feel weird about it during my 10K PoT, although that one I did also skip the very first walk interval, but stuck to them after that. It is just the 5K's that I feel silly walking so soon. :) My last one was especially bad, it started at a high school that had 2 fairly long entrance roads on either end of the school that connected to a road that went around the perimeter of it. The race started near the beginning of one entrance and we ran the perimeter road and then out the other entrance... I just felt so silly stopping to walk while we were still AT the high school... but it was like 0.5 mile before we finally exited that opposite entrance!

I would love to run without stopping, but for me the intervals seem to work the best. For a while I was trying to build up to longer and longer intervals, but it was giving me worse times because I had to stop and walk so much as the runs got longer. I started out my Tink training plan at 5/1 intervals, then dropped them to 4/1, then to 3/1. Then someone in this thread who is in a Galloway group mentioned that his recommendation was now no more than 30s walk intervals. So I switched it then to 2 min run and 30s walks (I think Tink might have been the first run I did with those intervals... so much for don't try anything new on race day? ;)) and have been doing that ever since. I know I am capable though of doing longer stretches if I have to, which is why I don't mind too much when I blow the intervals at the start of a 5K. :)

Still keeping up with my training, so far so good. I hurt my knee in 2013 during the Tower of Terror 10 miler and it's been bothering me lately. I haven't gotten it checked out by anyone but it feels like my knee goes a different direction while I'm running rather than straight. It's a hit or miss somedays, like something is rubbing it. Got a pretty decent cramp in my thigh last night, reminds me that I need to get back to my daily yoga. 6.5 miles this weekend and NOT looking forward to it.

My shoes I probably buy every 2 years, but I should buy more. I've been running a lot more lately but I don't keep track of my miles. My pair now is Nike Flex Experience RN 2 and I love them. My last pair was something like Nike Freerun XT or something, they were great too. I've never tried anything else. My mom says that my shoes are why my knee hurts, but I have no problems with my other knee and I still feel comfortable in my shoes so I don't know.

I missed my training on Tuesday. Someone dumped a poor, starving puppy out where I work and we finally caught him after work on Monday. So Tuesday we had to take him to the vet after work. By the time we were done, got home, fed all the animals, fixed dinner and sat down it was like 9:00 at night and I said, oh, no I was supposed to run today! Obviously I did not get right up and do it then, lol. I had great plans to make it up last night but it didn't happen. DH wanted to BBQ and then there was a baseball game, etc. etc. etc. lol. So, tonight I WILL run! Although I am supposed to go drop off my car at the shop after work and DH is picking me up and we are going out to dinner (steak and shrimp buffet!)...... :)

Same here. I run 35 miles/week on average, so go through about 6 pair per year. When I buy a new "version" of a shoe, I buy a single pair to validate the fit and "ride". If I am happy, I then buy 3 more pair on-line (cheaper). I rotate the 4 pair and track mileage. If the same version is still available when it is about time for new shoes, I just buy 4 more pair on-line. If not, I start over again validating a new shoe.

A few recent articles that I have read have me questioning this strategy. I may consider rotating two different types of shoes when I make my next shoe replacement. Something to do with foot strength weakness resultant from using the exact same shoe day after day on runs, and I have had a few foot issues lately.

I do something similar, though I don't run as much so don't go through as many shoes. But I generally buy a pair every 6 months. I buy a pair in the Spring and then the Fall. When I buy a new pair, I retire my oldest pair, use the new pair for long runs and move the other pair to short weekday runs. But I've been reading the same articles about rotating through different models of shoes so I may try to buy a different pair next time and see how it works.

ARG. Where you the one who had this happen a couple weeks ago too? I think it was on this board...I could definitely be wrong though! People are horrible. Thank you for helping him :)

I have a couple reservations we are going to release, thought I would offer them up here before putting them on the adr thread. All are for 2 guests.

Wednesday 11/4, Cali Grill 9:05PM
Friday 11/06, BOG 5:40PM, we got a better time.
Also have BOG on Saturday 8:15 if you have anyone that wasnt running that wants to eat there race night.

I seem to need to replace my shoes now about every 4 to 5 months. Been running in Saucony Mirage line. They were my first pair of running shoes and I have stuck with them. I like the idea of rotating them in, I think I should order another pair now. :yay:

Yep, that was me. Same puppy. I had been feeding him at work. We borrowed a cage from Humane Society to catch him in (THAT was fun, lol). He looks so much better already! We are going to keep him. His name is now Poppy, since I had been calling him Puppy for a week and he came to it lol. I know, I hate people sometimes!

If I could figure out how to post pictures I would put his before and after pics. He was so horribly thin! But filling out now. :)
