Wine and Dine 2015

I just went through revising my training schedule. It took a lot of white out and multiple versions of Galloway's plan but I think I am ready!! :teacher:

It is tricky because I am doing a combination of Galloway's time improvement plan, and his half marathon plan on his website. I am sort of making my own plan for a combination of reasons, but mostly because I do not want to go that high up in mileage (time plan goes to at least 17 miles). So, I am going to cap it at 12 miles. That is also partly due to an amazing trip I just planned to Oktoberfest in Munich! (My good friend is moving to London for her husband's job for 6 months, and since she is already in Europe we couldn't pass up the chance). I am sure that will be a benefit to my run training. :scared:

I will be advancing 1.5 miles between long runs per his plans. So for example, running 9 miles, and then 10.5 miles. And I will be doing speed work between. Due to this trip falling late in training, I have ended up with this:

Week:
12 - 10.5 miles
13 - 4 miles (8 x 800)
14 - none - but A LOT of walking in Germany
15 - 8 miles
16 - 12 miles

I taper from there until race day in week 18. I decided 8 miles was an easy number post vacation to get myself in the swing of things, and then I could jump back on track the next week and advance the 1.5 miles. That is the best idea I have come up with so far, unless anyone has a better one!

Yep, that was me. Same puppy. I had been feeding him at work. We borrowed a cage from Humane Society to catch him in (THAT was fun, lol). He looks so much better already! We are going to keep him. His name is now Poppy, since I had been calling him Puppy for a week and he came to it lol. I know, I hate people sometimes!

If I could figure out how to post pictures I would put his before and after pics. He was so horribly thin! But filling out now. :)

Poppy is adorable. And I swear I almost teared up reading this!

I run hilly routes all the time, it should be a piece of cake, right?
Yep, you'll be fine! I live in coastal FL: FLAT as a pancake. So I do "hill" workouts on a tall bridge - and I've never found the "hills" in WDW races to be problems. But I also love running up hills and get very excited b them - a grass is always greener thing, maybe, lol!

I say this every year but its the banked roads you need to be cautious of if you are not used to them. Not sure how to prepare for it either. Maybe princess V will be able to explain it better- she's quite the veteran Florida runner on the boards.
Yep, our FL roads are always, always a problem for me; the constant slant makes my ankles and IT bands mega-cranky. Not just roads: every paved surface is steeply cambered to handle stormwater runoff. There's no way to prepare for it, really, but the best way to mitigate its punishment on ankles, knees and hips is to regularly switch up where you're running on the road so no one side is taking the brunt of it for too long. The worst of the worst are the cloverleaf interchanges, where the slant is really, really steep - best bet on those is to hug the far inside or far outside of the curve, where the pavement evens out a bit.

And speaking of adrenaline. I cannot stress enough to try not to go out too fast at the start. I completely ruined my last wine and dine by being too aggressive for the first mile (plus then I tried to make up time after a picture stop). Race how you train, run your own race and pace, and just have a good time. For those in the back of the pack, there will be opportunities to weave and pass people. The highways are huge and we are on them a lot.
Yes, yes, yes!!!

Ok. How often do you all buy new running sneakers? What is your favorite brand/kind/style? How much do you spend approximately on a new pair?
Oh. Um... I have sort of a shoe problem. :wave2: My search for the "perfect" show has taken me through many, MANY pairs, so I don't have any sort of schedule for buying new; I always seem to have a new-ish pair around, lol! I have worn out 1 pair at almost 250 miles, and another is reduced to short runs at a little over 200 miles; my body likes them fresh, so the odds of me ever getting 400 miles on a shoe are probably slim. Right now I'm rotating Newton Gravity, Newton Fate, Altra Intuition and Saucony Kinvara, and I like them all about equally. I try to buy when they go on sale/clearance and with discounts, but Newton is an expensive shoe, any way I slice it: the Gravity ran me about $140, Fate came in around $80, I scored a couple pairs of Kinvara 5s at $60, and I got my newest Altras for $49 on closeout.

anyone supplementing their diet with protein powder? I was for the first 2 years of my running career just eating clean- fish , chicken minimal processed food and 2100 calories a day ( 205lbs, 6ft male) and would take in about 75- 80 grams protein a day. I plateaued with my running in june and no matter how often I ran, how well I ate, I could not see an improvement wich as you know is very demoralizing. Came across article from runners world that athletes should take in about .45 to .72 grams per pound ( up from the .36 per pound i was doing). I then added protein powder through smoothies to my diet and bumped up my protein intake to about 125 grams for the last six weeks. My 5k time is back to where i was before a long layoff. My 10k is 4 minutes faster than previous PR. For 3 weeks in a row before powder I ran long runs of 7 miles and could never break 1:20. Two weeks on powder It was 1:18. Last weekend I got to 7 miles at 1:15 and my 10 mile mark was 1:48, my fastest 10 mile mark ever. Plus the positive results are fueling me now to get out there easier than before. Cant wait till November, but in the meantime I got the disneyland 1/2 next month

I have been using a protein powder to mix with my coffee with for about a year now. I use 6 ounces of milk, shake in the powder, then add my coffee, much better than using creamer and sugar. Not sure if it helps my running, but it helps me maintain my weight.

You sound like me!

I am wondering with all this talk about having different types of shoes if I should get another pair to rotate in of a different model. The Intuitions are tempting with how much on sale the last model is, but I'm a little leery of the lighter cushioning. I really like the Olympus (it's the max cushioning trail version of the Paradigm). Maybe I should get a pair of the Torins like I had originally thought about doing... but no one has last model Torins anymore! I'd have to get them at retail, boo. :)

Since this is my first time doing Wine and Dine I'm wondering if they've always mailed the $15 gift card before the race?

No. This is the first year runDisney is doing this. It used to be distributed at packet pick up.

I am a little afraid that I will miss the envelope for it. I got the party ticket in the mail and it really is just a completely plain white envelope. So much so that I tossed it aside and did not open it for awhile thinking spam! I know it is to discourage theft and all. But yeesh. Will someone post here when they receive theirs so we can all start looking? TIA!

Love all the shoe discussions on here. My feet always hurt for a day or two after running; issues with my big toe joint and the ball of my foot. I have never found a shoe that fixes that, so I just suck it up. Based on discussions here, and online reviews, I'm going to give the Altra Olympus a shot. At only $50 (and free shipping!) it is worth it for testing my first experience with a well padded zero drop shoe.

Shoebuy is worth a try - they have last the Torin, but only in one color. And Shoebuy will apply its discount codes to Altra, unlike Running Warehouse! I've been considering trying them, too - I tried the original Torin and the heel was much too loose, but it sounds like they tightened it up in the next incarnation. I don't do well in a lot of cushion; Hokas absolutely kill my joints. But the Intuition 1.5 and 2 feel cushioned enough for me without feeling like I'm sinking into fluff, if that makes sense.

DD25 and I have an ADR at Whispering Canyon Café for lunch at 1:00 on Sunday after race. We figure we will finally be awake by then, lol. Neither of us have ever been. :)

ETA: Also have ADR at Beaches and Cream on Monday for ice cream, lol. :)

So wait, has this year's party ticket already been mailed out?

I received the ticket for my mom (spectator, not participant) days after ordering it. Runners will have a bracelet for admission, I assume, which will be picked up with the race packet.

This, I received my brother's ticket very quickly after ordering

Ahhh, gotcha. I was going to have an episode if it turned out I missed a party ticket (for me, the runner) in the mail. I didn't order any extra tickets as I'll be solo at the run that night. Thanks!!!

I couldn't wear Hokas when I tried them, so I don't know what they'd feel like running. They were way too narrow for me and my feet kept rolling to the outsides just in my hall. But the cushion on the Olympus is very firm even though it's a max cushioning shoe. I was surprised, I thought it was going to be squishy. :)

I will check Shoebuy out, thanks!

Also check Running Warehouse (runningwarehouse.com) for good deals on sale shoes and lots of gear. They also have a code on their FB page for 15% off any sale shoes (any of the ones whose prices end in .88).

This!! I literally just yesterday (thanks Miranda!!) ordered some new shoes that I would not have ordinarily tried because they tend to be rather expensive. I'm heavier for a female runner; 5'8" and about 170 pounds- though I'm only a size 8 so not fat; thus I tend to be brutal on shoes if I'm actually running in them. Add the fact that I wear a 10, have a lower arch, a neutral foot, and tend to naturally weight bear laterally as it is.....can we say complicated foot to fit? lol. Thanks to this link I ordered the Newton Aha at $80, and the Salomon XScream 3D and Sense Link at $60 and $50 respectively. That is before the FB code.

Since someone asked about shoes, I mostly used to wear Asics. I get a professional discount on Asics so I get them fairly cheap. I was a hardcore Kayano person until I started seriously running. They were great for a short jog (ie about 5k distance give or take) but when I started training and running 3x a week I was having IT band pain, patellofemoral syndrome, etc. So I started to search for other shoes. The Sendai and Kinsei were my next choices. No real biomechanical issues to speak of but I ended up with bruised second and third toes (thought I'd lose the nails but didn't) in the Sendai's after my 5k over the July holiday. I don't size up my running shoes unless the shoe runs notoriously small. My foot just doesn't need it. But, race day I wore compression socks and for some reason, my left foot kept sliding in the shoe and banging the end. I don't know why it never happened on a training run because I wore compression socks and those two shoes during them (I alternate shoes based on the distance of the run or speed work etc) but that led me to be on the search yet again for shoes.

I'm in the process of trying the new Nimbus to see if I like it for longer runs- they're very cushioned so some people can't deal with that for long runs. Short runs and walking seem to do okay, but I've yet to take them on anything long.

I've tried on the Mizuno Wave and various Brooks models, I didn't like the Brooks just walking around, so it was a no go for running. Brooks' are so wide in the toe box, and I know many many people love that...but I felt like I was wearing clown shoes. Too roomy in the toes for me. Mizuno I jogged short runs in twice and both times they gave me lateral/5th ray pain. I think maybe they try to correct supination just a hair and my sensitive feet being supinatory in nature anyway just didn't care for it.

I have Solomon Speedcross 3's that I got on clearance for $50 (yes, $50) at LL Bean that I LOVE. Sadly, they are strictly trail shoes, so I can't wear those for training for road races. But my love of the shoe is what led me to try the two from running warehouse. That and free shipping with free returns. I'll report on them once I've broken them in and have actually gone running in them.

Lastly (did I mention I have a *wee* bit of a shoe thing? lol) I'm working on breaking in a pair of New Balance 890 v4s and 880 v4's. If you traditionally are like me and don't size up, you WILL need to for the 890's. I ordered a 10.5 and could easily still do an 11 without it feeling too big. Got those on amazon for like $40. Yeah, $40! The 880's I ordered true to size and are the only shoes in my arsenal that I paid going retail for. (did I mention I'm also a bit of a deal freak? lol) If I need to size up for the next pair for longer runs, I will. Mostly I tried these because I don't want to buy the RD NB's and not be able to actually wear them or run in them.

So that's my shoe story. Like said before I alternate shoes based on my goal for the run that day, but as I get closer to a run try to run in the pair that I plan on running the race in. I walk a lot for work, so I tend to wear new shoes for 1 week at work to break them in and if they don't give me issues there, they get moved to rotation for short runs. If still no issues, I move them up to long runs. After they are over mileage, they become work only shoes, and then if they start to not feel 'right' they become run about town shoes. If they still have life left after all that- and/or are starting to give me pain or just don't feel 'right', I donate them.

I track mileage on my shoes mainly only because Strava and Garmin Connect make it easy. :) I can assign shoes to my activities and then they add up the mileage for me to keep track.

This!

I don't mind doing it for the half... at least at Disney, there were so many people already walking that I didn't feel weird. And I mostly didn't feel weird about it during my 10K PoT, although that one I did also skip the very first walk interval, but stuck to them after that. It is just the 5K's that I feel silly walking so soon. :) My last one was especially bad, it started at a high school that had 2 fairly long entrance roads on either end of the school that connected to a road that went around the perimeter of it. The race started near the beginning of one entrance and we ran the perimeter road and then out the other entrance... I just felt so silly stopping to walk while we were still AT the high school... but it was like 0.5 mile before we finally exited that opposite entrance!

I would love to run without stopping, but for me the intervals seem to work the best. For a while I was trying to build up to longer and longer intervals, but it was giving me worse times because I had to stop and walk so much as the runs got longer. I started out my Tink training plan at 5/1 intervals, then dropped them to 4/1, then to 3/1. Then someone in this thread who is in a Galloway group mentioned that his recommendation was now no more than 30s walk intervals. So I switched it then to 2 min run and 30s walks (I think Tink might have been the first run I did with those intervals... so much for don't try anything new on race day? ;)) and have been doing that ever since. I know I am capable though of doing longer stretches if I have to, which is why I don't mind too much when I blow the intervals at the start of a 5K. :)

Exactly how I felt. For the 5k I did, the first nearly mile was in a stadium parking lot weaving along the access road to get out to the main street. I felt like an idiot having to stop to walk and we weren't even out of the parking lot yet! lol

I do something similar, though I don't run as much so don't go through as many shoes. But I generally buy a pair every 6 months. I buy a pair in the Spring and then the Fall. When I buy a new pair, I retire my oldest pair, use the new pair for long runs and move the other pair to short weekday runs. But I've been reading the same articles about rotating through different models of shoes so I may try to buy a different pair next time and see how it works.

I've been doing this and it's served me well. I noticed that when I started doing it, a lot of the more biomechanics related pains (IT band and patellofemoral were my two) stopped happening. Although, I did completely switch shoes too, so I'm not sure 100% which actually was more responsible for that!
