Windows 11

Exactly! I have the Windows 10 updates turned off on my computer because of how glitchy they are. Lately, my laptop has already become kind of glitchy, freezing at times, getting worse with time. I think I lost some functioning each time the laptop froze and shut down incorrectly. But, it worked fine, for years, up to this point in time. I don't need the constant updates loaded on top of the glitches making it WORSE.
Just my opinion, but having updates turned off could be dangerous. They also put security fixes in the updates, and with more and more cyber attacks being launched, keeping up to date with security patches is a good idea.

I have mine set to turn off regular auto updates. When they do some kind of security patch, I get a message about something waiting to be updated or similar words. Far too many regular updates are for software I will never use. I think they need to stop adding new features with each release for stuff 95% of the users have no need. I looked at how many different fonts there are. Honestly who needs a gazillion types of fonts? I tried deleting them but they reappeared the next time I logged on............LOL.

I'm not dead set agianst it or anything, but I'm not chompign at the bit to upgrade. If it comes through on the PC I'll probably go ahead with it.

Although this thread is about Windows 11, just checked on my PC using Windows 10 and it shows an optional update available called Windows 10 ver 21H1. Don't intend to download it.

I do have an advantage in our corporate IT is who actually pushes NEEDED windows updates. If they roll it out to our corporate machines, then I upgrade my home machines.

Yes, you've warned about this before. Thanks. I know that with the example of the gas pipeline being hit with a ransomware attack, it shows how leaving oneself vulnerable to cyber attacks is becoming more common and super serious. As it turns out, when I was poking around my computer trying to figure out why I got this download, if my metered connection was still on, and how to undo the updates that screwed up my computer, I found this description, stating Windows has started sneaking certain updates in. I assume (hope) they are probably the critical security patches.

Hmm, I wonder if that's when my computer started getting glitchy. :scratchin As mentioned, I was about to buy a new laptop before they sold out. Now, I really need the new laptop before this one dies.

Exactly! It isn't the security patches being installed that I object to. It's all the bloatware junk they add on, that changes our settings, appearance, etc, that I can't stand. The update that nearly "bricked" my laptop installed a different color taskbar at the bottom of the screen that had a little box showing the weather. Also some other stuff in the Windows Start menu. I didn't even bother looking at those, as I never use the Start menu. I have all the icons I need on my desktop.

Microsoft needs to separate out the critical updates from all this other, unnecessary stuff. We should be ASKED each time if we want the new, unnecessary "improvements" before installing.

For instance, when my new laptop arrives, I will install all the current updates to be up to date, including the new taskbar & Star menu stuff. Mostly so it won't force it on me later. Then I'll turn on the metered Internet connection so I only get the critical patches.

I do pretty much the same thing. I always apply the security ones. But the feature ones I usually wait a month or two before applying. No glitching computer here.

I honestly think they keep producing a lot of non-security related updates just to make $$$ selling software. I would never pay for a new operating system on my existing PC. Think we would be better off if they had basic versions of these systems for those of use who just do simple things at home like surf the internet, read email, maybe a spreadsheet or two, store photos, etc.. Machine would likely run faster on the things I do use if it wasn't bogged down with all that extra stuff I don't want/need running in the background. I don't run an IT dept or business from home and don't need all of those whiz/bang features...........LOL.

You have described a Chromebook.

I make my own decisions when it comes to technology. And since everything today is about retro and nostalgia, I'm rolling back to Windows 95.

Security? Nobody hacks Windows 95 anymore!
And so many features! Just ask Jennifer Aniston and Matthew Perry:

I'll be upgrading my out of warranty Surface Table to the newest version and that will come with 11 so I'll finally get my hands on it to try it out and also see what is compatible with it at work.

At some point I'll upgrade, not sure when yet.

Never used Reddit since it seem like yet another social media site where people just argue/belittle/ridicule each other...............zero interest in that nonsense. The link posted above takes you to a discussion mostly talking about dubious copies of software. If you are going to update something, I would ONLY recommend getting them from official/legal sources.

I have never seen a need to update the operating system on any PC I have ever owned. Those periodic security updates have always been free on any type of Microsoft PC I have owned.

Yeah, but it goes to 11.....

I have a laptop that only Run Windows 10. I use it for vacation travel and Ill keep using it till it fails.

I doubt there is any reason why Windows 11 can't run on it other than trying to force folks to buy new hardware.
There is also too much spying built into Windows 11 that is on by default - so I really dislike it, but don't really see another choice.

I've been running Windows forever, since before it really became popular, so I don't see myself changing to some other OS. Its always frustrated me that they have continually upped the hardware requirements when they may not really need to. I recall being very annoyed when they upped the hardware requires for Word (3 maybe?) - its a word processor why do you need that much?

It is a lot of frustration, but I guess with the OS its a little more understandable as it has to work and have drivers for a large array of hardware configurations.

BYW - I am pretty sure Disney is running Windows 95 for many of its systems (according to a bus driver ;) )
The entry Kiosks at HS went down a week or two ago for about 15 minutes at opening and no one could enter the parks. In talking to the manager she mentioned it was on Windows 95.
This is not uncommon - I think the Government\Military is often many version behind because the software is working and fully vetted. They just buy support contracts for it.

I know where I work our IT department only installs every other version of new operating systems. Their view is the new ones are mostly intended to generate revenue for the company releasing the software and has virtually nothing to do with increasing enduser productivity or ease of use.

Nope Windows 10 works just fine for me
My feelings, also. That said, my computer (Windows 10) had a nervous breakdown about a month ago and wasn't revivable. So I have a new computer and it came with Windows 11. I'm getting used to it, but I don't like it as much as 10.

Windows is a mixed blessing for me. Interface wise, I love my Mac. It just WORKS and is super-secure. Pretty too. I'm also fond of my Ubuntu Linux installation. VERY attractive, and extremely fast. And if you still to the official software, it's extremely easy to use. Problem is, when you go for the more off-the-shelf software, you may have to resort to the bash, which is complicated, beyond my skills. Windows is a little awkward to me, but Windows 11 does LOOK prettier than Windows 10. Main attraction of Windows? That there is tonnes of software that can work out of the box.

Agreed. I just moved from 7 to 10 about 18 months ago. And really only because 7 was not going to be updated any longer with security updates. And it was time, about 8 years or so, for a new PC.
Same, I had to move to Windows 10 last year because TurboTax wouldn't run on my 9 year old laptop with the old version. Sadly, I had to buy a new laptop last week. I didn't want Windows 11 with all of their tracking stuff, but didn't have much of a choice unless I went with Apple. I spent 2 hours unchecking options in Windows and Google and I'm still not sure I got every option to "opt out" of companies tracking what I do, storing my data in the cloud, and sharing the data with others. As someone who used to work in the IT industry and with big data, I'm very wary of all that.
