Win Rockefeller, Lt. Governor of Arkansas, died this morning. I had the great pleasure of knowing this wonderful man for the past 5 years. A kinder, more gentle soul never existed. He was the father of 8 children. Please have a little P&PD for his family.
Lt. Governor Win Rockefeller returned to Little Rock from Seattle July 8 after his second bone marrow transplant to treat a blood condition did not achieve the desired results. He will coordinate his further treatments through UAMS.

Rockefeller underwent two bone marrow transplants through the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, a consortium of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, UW Medicine, and Children’s Hospital and Regional Medical Center.

About Win RockefellerWin Rockefeller was elected lieutenant governor in November 1996 in a special election. He was elected to a full four-year term with 67 percent of the vote in November 1998 and was re-elected with 60 percent of the vote in November 2002.

His constitutional duties are to preside over the Senate when it is in session and to act as governor when the elected governor is out of state or incapacitated. Because Governor Mike Huckabee was out of state, Rockefeller was acting governor September 11, 2001.

Rockefeller has worked to attract industries to Arkansas and to strengthen the state's existing industries. He has supported literacy councils across Arkansas and serves as honorary chairman of the Arkansas Literary Festival. In 1997, he created Books in the Attic, a program in which Boy Scouts collect used books to distribute to families. A lifetime member of the National Rifle Association, he sponsors Project ChildSafe, which has distributed hundreds of thousands of free trigger locks in Arkansas.

He was active in public service long before he was elected lieutenant governor. He has served as president of the Quapaw Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America, currently serves on the Boy Scouts National Board of Directors, and is an assistant Scoutmaster. He served from 1981-1995 on the Arkansas State Police Commission. In 1991, he was appointed by President George Bush to serve on the President's Council on Rural America and was elected chairman. He has served on the national boards of Ducks Unlimited and The Nature Conservancy and on the boards of the Arkansas Cancer Research Center and the Arkansas Arts Center Foundation. He is the founder of The Billfish Foundation, an organization dedicated to protecting marlins, swordfish and other billfish, and is a Texas Christian University trustee emeritus.

Born September 17, 1948, he is the son of the late Governor Winthrop Rockefeller and grandson of the late John D. Rockefeller, Jr. He attended Pembroke College at the University of Oxford and is a graduate of the ranch management program at Texas Christian University. Rockefeller is the father of eight children. He and his wife, Lisenne, maintain homes at Winrock Farms in Conway County and in Little Rock.

Frustrated by the lack of educational opportunities for their two children with Down syndrome, the Rockefellers in 2000 started what is now the Academy at Riverdale, a school for children with learning differences that focuses on education rather than therapy. The school moved into a state-of-the-art facility in 2004 and has since grown from seven to 25 students.

He has received numerous awards in recognition of his service, including Rotary International’s Paul Harris Fellowship, the Arkansas Coalition for Juvenile Justice’s Lifetime Advocate for Arkansas Youth Award, the Arkansas Association of Fundraising Professionals’ 2003 President’s Award, and the U.S. Baltic Foundation’s Baltic-American Public Service Achievement Award.

In addition to his public service, Rockefeller serves as chief executive of Winrock Farms, Inc. and has interests in retailing, development, automobile dealerships and the resort industry.

You've had a tough week. You're in my thoughts.

Yeah, it has been touch. He was such a wonderful man.
