Will you stay at HOJO for regular rate?

$59 is not as cheap as the Anaheim Plaza? What's the Plaza rate, I have never seen a Harbor hotel for less than $59 and I've even checked the Plaza. Oh and we rarely book our weekend trips more than 1-3 weeks out and we've never stayed at the HoJo for more than the $74 a night rate.......you know, I have called the HoJo on the drive down to Anaheim and booked the Ent Rate. LOL

Tempurpedic??? OMG, those beds suck......I slept on one once and had the worst aches the next day!! I hated it, slept on the floor the next night...seriously. I'd take a pillow top (which is what we have) over Tempurpedic any day. That's just personal preference of course, I just think it's interesting that we have such different tastes in beds. LOL

And yes, I'd say she is.....I am too but it's because no matter what we say you have some reason to not stay at the HoJo, so why are on this thread that's all about the HoJo? lol Just to argue? That's fine, it's just a little funny that no matter what any of say to counter your reasons to avoid the HoJo you can find another one. :) You have your reasons I'm sure but you won't convince those of us who love it there....just as we aren't likely to convince you to try it. :)

1. After booking a package deal on orbitz.com...the anaheim plaza is cheaper than the hojo entertainment rate.
2. Our tempurpedic is the first mattress I've ever had that didn't leave me with aches and pains. It's fantastic. I hate pillowtops. They are too soft.
3. I consider it rude to roll your eyes at someone...but since it's just the internet I suppose it doesn't count.
4. I wasn't arguing. I was just stating a different point of view.
5. The thread title asks if you would stay at the hojo without the entertainment rate. I answered that question with a no and reasons why.

I'm rolling my eyes because you have arguments against it that are completely invalid (proximity to DLR, price, freeway noise). Bumber asked if you ever have stayed there and you said you always stay at the Plaza. So we are left to assume that you are making these arguments without first hand knowledge of the property. I only comment on properties that I have personally visited or had close friends report to me about.

I don't care if you don't want to stay at the HoJo, but to come on a thread and try to deter others when you haven't stayed there yourself is a bit bold.

How are my opinions invalid? It's all a matter of taste/preference. You can't say that my opinions are invalid just because they are different than your opinions. I don't think it's wrong that people like the Hojo. That's their choice.

You're right...I don't have first hand knowledge of the place. But I can see on the map that's it's closer to the freeway therefore the chance of freeway noise is greater than at a hotel farther away.

I wasn't trying to deter people from staying there. I was just giving my thoughts on the subject. Is that not allowed? Are we only allowed to be hojo groupies in this thread? Maybe the title of the thread should be changed.

We're *thinking* of going to DLR next Saturday and come home Sunday. Hojo has the entertainment rate available for that night $69 in building 2 with a garden pool view. The Anaheim Plaza has their rate for $89. I've never stayed there, but their rooms look smaller and there's no microwave....

We've always had a room with a microwave at the anaheim plaza. Not sure if all rooms do though. The most we've ever paid for a room there was $69.
Not sure about room size. We've been in a few different sized rooms at the anaheim plaza.

P.S. Since people here clearly don't want to hear my opinions anymore...I'll stop responding to this thread. (Feel free to send me a PM anytime though.) Have a nice weekend everyone.

Please don't feel bad, I've had the same response in other threads to my stated disapointment in HoJo's after having stayed there at least half a dozen times in the last 17 years the most recent and first bad stay being in July of this year. I actually copied and pasted my rates at the Candy Cane Inn for an upcoming trip due to disbelief that they were going to be cheaper than HoJo's. The absolute fact of the matter is that they DO NOT have good beds in all the rooms. They started replacing beds last February starting with the highest priced rooms in building one. we stayed in one of those rooms on one of those beds, and yes the room is nice and the bed is awesome, but the price was high! if you are lucky enough to be able to go when the entertainment rates are available, then you are lucky indeed. If not, you pay a good price. Our last stay, we not only paid a high price for the room, $120. per night, but got a dark room, that DID NOT have new beds, in fact I had to take painkillers for my back for the days we were there. The shower was horrible, small, dark and terrible water pressure. We were on the ground floor, right beside the main walkway to building 2 so that we could not have our curtains open or sit out on the little balcony. Cruise Cruise Cruise said this was a reason they liked it there, because this does not happen, but it does. The absolute fact of the matter is, you can put in a request for a certain room type, but when you check in it may not be available. You could end up in a room like we had, which we found unacceptable. I will not stay there again even with the entertainment rate available, until they have updated ALL of their beds, and fixed up ALL of their bathrooms/showers. As I have said, we have stayed there many many times over 17 years, we loved it there! I was on forums touting how good it was there, until this last stay. Add that to the fact they overcharged us, which we did get corrected, and we checked out early due to the bad beds/shower/lack of privacy, and they left the hold on our card for the original longer stay, and charged it for the actual stay. It's perfectly acceptable to be very happy with a place, and to tell people about it, but I agree....rolling your virtual eyes at someone for a difference of opinion is rude.

Smiley, I have never disagreed with your assessment or experience at the HoJo. You had a valid complaint about a poor stay and for that I sympathize with you and don't blame you for not wanting to return.

What I did have a problem with was someone stating an "opinion" on a place they had never stayed. How can I give an opinion on the Candy Cane Inn when I have never personally stayed there? I don't, and I won't. I have heard of others having very positive experiences there, but I don't go on threads about the CCI and to give my opinion on why I don't stay there. If I did, I would fully expect others to roll their virtual eyes at me.

Now that the OP has had her initial question answered, let's let this thread fall down the list and onto page 2 where it belongs.

Thanks for the idea. But I'll probably pass on that one. I really don't think it'll be as cheap as the Anaheim Plaza.

Also, we rarely book our trips more than a month in advance so that would probably be a problem too.

Okey dokey. Just thought it would be helpful so you'd know if you do or don't like it. :)

I have now stayed at Carousel (did not like it for various reasons), Anabella (really liked it), the Hilton (liked it and liked the price I managed to get throug hotwire, PPH (didn't like it the first time, but being upgraded to a suite will change your opinions, lol), and HoJo. I can only state the things I've heard about all the others, and while that's valuable coming from a person who is on All The Time and reads all sorts of pros and cons of various places, I can't give any sort of personal opinion on it.

And of course it's worth noting that I *could have* stayed there at full price last week but did NOT. I felt that paying almost the same and staying at PPH was better for us, though of course the entertainment rate showed up shortly before our trip, and if my ordered Entertainment Book had showed up (it took over 2 weeks from shipping to receiving!) on time I would have had a hard time deciding, but the fact is I did NOT want to stay there at full price.

But as has been stated, the entertainment rate can show up when you least expect it. It never showed up for the 5th of this month, hence the $54 night at the Hilton through hotwire (got to cancel a $59 rate at Motel6 through hotels.com for that). But it did show up, after they had absolutely NO availability for my dates, for the 6th and 7th, probably b/c many people had booked for Candelight Processional just in case they got tickets, and then they canceled them.

When I stayed at Carousel, which was booked through Orbitz (and ended up being MORE expensive through Orbitz than if I had booked directly with Carousel, UGH), it was b/c there were no HoJo EB rates, but then just after I reached the cancelation timeframe for Carousel/Orbitz, the rate showed up. 4 days before I traveled! So it CAN be gotten last minute, it can show up at last minute.

Anyway, I'm just blathering now. :)

smiley_face2, was that your post on the HJ forums? I felt so bad for you when I read of your problematic stay (if it was you). Glad you got the price problem taken care of.

From my experience at amazon.com, "holds" on a credit or debit card aren't micromanaged by the charger, rather it's very much up to the bank behind the card. Some people had holds stay for weeks, while all of my holds dropped off immediately. Sometimes I would never even see the hold. When we went on our RCCL cruise, some people on the cruise had holds that caused them problems during their stay, but we never were impacted by the hold at all...just different banks and different policies at those banks. So the hold staying on almost surely was NOT governed by hojo, but rather just your bank's/credit card company's policies.

I am curious about one thing...if you've stayed there often, why didn't the beds bother you before? They just finally aged enough that they were impossible to deal with? I haven't yet stayed at an upgraded bed room, but I remain hopeful! Sounds like they are doing about 6 per month, and they are workign on building 2 from the last post I read about it over there, so chances get better and better each month that goes by that a guest will get one of those rooms, even if it's not advertised for that building yet. :)

Hilton beds were scrumptious, for the record! If only I weren't in strange and random huge amounts of pain (almost thought it was appendicitis for a little while), I could have slept well that night!!!! :upsidedow

Thanks Bumbershoot! We were lucky we were not impacted by the double billing to our card, but I always check it while we are travelling to see what's going on. The cc company said it was the hotel, they had put the pre auth through for a full length stay, then they charged the actual stay when we checked out early, and the pre auth stayed on an extra 3 days... cc comp said the hotel would have to call and tell them to remove the hold. I honestly don't remember if I phoned HoJo's to tell them to call and remove it or not.... as I said it was not a problem, but if you had a lower limit on your card, or were close to the limit you could have a problem. Anyway, the beds.... I think just a combination of yes, we've been staying there for 17 years now, so the older beds are just older... and we've always been very lucky with our rooms as I've said... we always got upgraded even when we did not pay for it, usually due to me contacting them in advance of our stay.... Willie who used to deal with reservations always took special care of us, because he said we came to them all the time, always stayed a couple of weeks, and sometime had more than 1 room. I've got pics of my kids when they were toddlers in front of the fountain, all the way to when they are near adults :) I contacted Lorealle before we went, explained how we had been staying there for so many years and thought of it like our own vacation home! told her it was our second honeymoon and first holiday without any kids in 28 years, was hopeful we would get a good room, asked her about building one, but I guess they were really booked up at the time. It was an unfortunate compilation of bad things happening. I just know I won't take a chance staying there unless I could get a premium room, and with the regular price, without the EC, for very little more and a passholder discount, we can stay over at the Disneyland Hotel. I've read people say they had bad stays there too, and ours was amazing! I think each time it's a bit of a crap shoot, you never know for certain what you are going to get even if you request things in advance, and obvously all the hotels have some rooms that are less than ideal. It's all in what is good for the individual, some things one person will like or will not be bothered by will be a deal breaker for others. Hopefully one day, there will be a premium room available at a good rate when we are going there, and we can stay and be happy with them again!

I still amazed by the passion some have for their hotel of choice but I understand it is human nature to seek to validate past decisions. I think as a rule no hotel will please everyone, we all have different expectations and priorities and we must be careful not to be carried away with hearsay...

I have personnal experience with CCI, Tropicanna and Carousel and would stay at anyone of them again even though they all had different strengths and weaknesses. I would also consider BWPPI, Camelot, Hojos and Anaheim Plaza because generally they get good reviews here.

I can understand not wanting to stay at HoJos unless you can get the ent rate, it is further away and even the discounted rack rates are dearer than other options that are closer. My kids are too old for the pirates play area, we really like to have a microwave (which not all Hojo rooms have) and interior corridors just aren't that much of an issue...

LucyDingos opinions are just as valid as anyone elses, I didn't read anything as being invalid in her postings, you may choose to disagree with her position but respect her freedom to express it.

No, I wouldn't stay there at the regular rate. We were not fans of Hojo's, noise being one of the biggest factors. Even with the ent rate, we prefer a closer motel such as the Tropicana. But mostly prefer staying onsite.

Oh....see I don't do package deals, we have AP's so we always book directly with the hotels themselves. :) The cheapest I've ever found the Plaza was $89 a night.
And see I thought Tempurpedics were too firm. LOL Again, personal preference.
And it's my opinion that you were arguing, I have every right to say that, just as you have every right to state your opinion regarding the HoJo and deny that you are arguing. Just as you likely think I'm arguing with you, I'm not, I'm just stating MY experiences and MY opinions. :)0++

Your opinions ARE valid, however they would hold more weight and validity had you actually stayed at the HoJo. :) I've stayed in Bldg 2....oh gosh.....at least 4, maybe 5 times and only ONCE did I experience freeway noise, that was for a 1 night stay so I didn't bother complaining. All other times I've been in Bldg 2 there has been no noise, Bldg 4 had no noise and Bldg 1 didn't either. Those are personal experiences as to the noise factor. I thought it was going to terribly noisy in Bldg 2, I was pleasantly surprised....and I'm one who has trouble falling asleep when there is a lot of road noise so that was a definite factor for me.

Smiley, the card this that happened to you is exactly what happened to me. Yup, at the HoJo...and yes, it was my debit card, not my credit card. It was the 1 night stay mentioned above where the freeway noise was bad, I used my debit card to pay and was pre-authed when we checked in the previous day, they asked if I wanted to use the same card when I checked out and I said "yes" so they ran the card again, putting a hold on twice the amount. I actually had a credit card auto pay bounce because of the HoJo taking that money out. I was not a happy camper after that trip. And to top it off, I got very ill the following week, my computer went down and I had no way to see what the problem with my bank account was...we decided that was an ill conceived trip and we shouldn't have made it. LOL

As I said, her opinions are valid, but if I was to make comments regarding her hotel of choice I'm sure she would have the same opinion as I do here. If I was to say it was a terrible place to stay even tho I've never stayed there she would have every right to tell me so. As a personal rule I don't do that, in fact when people have asked about, for example, staying at the CCI or the Desert Inn & Suites, I give my personal experiences/opinion on the CCI but I will say flat out "I've never stayed at DI&S so I can't speak of it". The majority of people who ask questions regarding hotels here are looking for first hand experiences not hearsay, which is what LucyDingo's opinion is, hearsay. HoJo is not the end all of hotels/motel for me and my gang but it's our first stop....:) I will also stay at the CCI, Trop, BWPPI, Crowne Plaza, Peacock Suites, GCH, DLH, PPH. Oh and FTR, the only time I'm willing to stay at a HoJo is in Anaheim....the others I've been to/seen are scary looking. LOL

What did I say that is "hearsay?" I just gave reasons I wouldn't stay there. It had nothing to do with things I've heard. I just don't want to risk freeway noise. Or pay higher rates than at other hotels.

Did I say "the hojo is loud"? Nope. I just said it's close to the freeway, which isn't hearsay. You can look on a map and see that as a fact.

I know I said I wasn't going to respond here anymore...but I'd just like some clarification on what I said that was "hearsay."

This is precisely what I'm talking about, LucyDingo never said Hojos was a terrible place or tried to put others off staying. I checked back through her postings and all she said was it was a little too close to the freeway and she prefered hotels closer. You yourself have acknowledged freeway noise was a factor on one of your stays and it is fact that there are hotels closer to DL. The microwave issue she also brought up is also perfectly valid, it has been established that not all Hojos rooms have microwaves and there are other hotels that are further away from the freeway, closer to DL and have a microwave in every room. LucyDingo never said that Hojos was noisey, just that it was closer to the freeway than others and therefore is not hearsay but fact, the other opinions were also facts and she is entitled to make them without staying there. Now if she had made comments about unfriendly staff for example then I would be with you, there are lots of things about a hotel that you can only comment on if you have stayed there.

For me the only thing that would get me to stay at Hojos is the entertainment rate for reasons that are similar to LucyDingo, thats not me saying Hojos is a terrible place to stay, just that I look for other things in a hotel to those that do prefer to stay there.

Lucy, (I keep wanting to call you Lucky lol) if I've misremembered your posts I apologize. I don't have time to go back and reread all 4 pages and probably won't until later this week. I also haven't read since Friday so again, if I am misremembering I apologize. :)

Yes, I did say there was freeway noise, for a 1 night stay that was booked the same day on the drive down to Anaheim. I didn't even expect to get a room at the Ent Rate but I did so I wasn't complaining. We took 14 trips to DL from July 07-July 08, we stayed at the HoJo 8 of those 14 times, most of the times we stayed at the HoJo were 2-5 night trips, only twice did we stay there for 1 night. For the amount of times we stayed there, having road noise once (our room was in the very back corner on the top floor of bldg 2 so we were the closest you could get to the freeway) was not an issue for us at all. :)

For the amount of times we stayed there, having road noise once (our room was in the very back corner on the top floor of bldg 2 so we were the closest you could get to the freeway) was not an issue for us at all. :)

Wouldn't be an issue for me either I am a heavy sleeper, but would be for my wife though. From what I can gather from reviews, freeway noise only affects a small number of rooms, still an issue for me but not a major as you can always request a room away from the freeway. The price and the distance from DL would be the deal breakers for me. I know its not that far but we used to come out of the park for lunch and dinner and so that extra distance would be a pain especially if we were paying more than hotels that were closer.

We are going to try for the ent rate but as we are travelling in early July, I really don't hold out much hope.....

Don't give up Kiwi, we didn't think we would be able to do a July trip either because the only way we could was to do it at the Ent Rate at the HoJo. I hadn't ever seen that rate available in July but it did pop up very last minute last July so we were able to make a quick trip! That was when we were in the pavilion room, Bldg 4. :)

As we are coming from New Zealand its a little hard to do a quick trip, but I might make a booking elsewhere but keep trying for the ent rate until the last possible moment that I have to confirm the other booking. I have to say the ent rate is awesome, at least $20 a night less than anywhere else. Might be worth getting Lorealle to keep an eye on it for me too... Thats something no-one has mentioned, the advantage of having someone from Hojos on this board....

Personally, I think you should stay at the Grand Californian....
Because it's super cheap..... :)

I wish.
