My husband wants to take them, but I thought I read somewhere that they won't work on the ship.

He doesn't believe me! :headache: Can someone help?

we have used the Motorola ones on board and not had a problem..

We just came back from the 7 day Western and used 4 walkie talkies onboard, in Cozumel, Grand Caymans and in Key West. They were a life saver for our group.

They will work fine in the Port, although it may be illegal to use them in foreign ports.
As a broadcast person, I did not take ours because techinically they should not work very well with all the metal on the ship. They broadcast over what is known as a "line of sight" frequency, they need a clear unobstructed path between them.
After having read the experiences of those who used them on the ship, my opinion is that they MAY work, but not with 100% reliability. So if you have room, pack them, just don't stake your life on them working. And as mentioned above, I would not use them outside the U-S since laws for their use may differ in other countries.

Good point TVguy. I should have elaborated. Here is the link to what countries allow push to talk or walkie talkies: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Family_Radio_Service.
I am a HAM radio operator and I did investigate before we went. That being said, we had Motorola T5420 and no had problem anywhere on the ship whether at sea or in port. We used our radios to meet at shows and throughout the day when our group split up. We had better reception on our radios than on our cells in Key West. We even had clear communications from one of our group that way still on the ship when we were at the Family Beach on Castaway Cay. I only wish we had more than four because we had a group of 16.

We have Uniden radios with a 3mile range. They did not always work so great on the ship. However, they were great when we were at CC, Cozumel, and Grand Cayman.

We were able to get recption when DH was on CC and I was still on the ship getting our DD ready to go. We are taking them again when we go in a few weeks.

If you do a search for Two-way radios you will find several threads. One tells you which brand work better than the others.

Oh great, now I have to admit to my husband that I'm WRONG?!? Argh! :scared1: (Just kidding...)

I just looked, and our radios are Motorola T5720. We have room, so I'll take them just in case. We will be together when in port, when we'll probably use them most is on CC.

Thanks for the info!

We used our Disney walkie talkies and they worked pretty well in all areas of the ship.

We used the Motorolas with great success. The kids used the princess walkies. They worked too.

We used the Midland GXT600 and they were amazing. DH reached me at Serenity Cove from our stateroom! They worked all over the ship. Of course, they worked too well when I was trying to find out where DH was when I was opening the stateroom door and he was further down the hall. Our hostess Bobbi-Lyn overheard him telling me "I'm looking at your butt right now!" She had a good laugh over that one!
