Will Soarin' make me dizzy?

I agree with the PP that it is very similar to the Magic Carpet part of the Philharmagic. I'd see that first, if you do OK with that part of the "movie" then you could try Soarin'. But that really makes you feel ill, then I'd skip Soarin'

Also, as far as the Simulator rides, you should be able to make the quesiness subside by closing your eyes if it gets too extreme for you. However, since much of the ride plays on the connection between your visual perception of what's on the screen, if you don't close your eyes in time, you will still have the after effects, much like you would have if you went on a roller coaster. For me, even though I get off the roller coaster onto terra firma, it still takes me a least an hour to shake off the quesiness, because it takes that long for the "rocks" in my ears to settle down and figure out that I am back on the ground not moving.

If your eye/brain connection takes awhile to calm after motion type movies it will take you awhile to shake the quesiness from Soarin' In both situations (either problems riding roller coasters or riding Simulator rides) it means your sensory system is hypersensitive and can overreact when other people have no problems. That also means it takes you longer to recover from the hyper stimulated state...(hence the longer time of quesiness)

If your sensory system is hypersensitive, you probably have other issues too, like not liking to wear tight pants, being annoyed by tags on your shirts or seams in your socks, not liking spicy foods, etc.

So anyway, you probably will know within the first 15 sec on Soarin' if it will be too much for you. If you start to feel the slightest bit dizzy, I would close my eyes and wait out the ride. Sitting in the third (bottom) row definately can help you, since you have a better view of the floor.

Good luck!:flower3:

Oh, I know, I get dizzy when I watch Kart as well.

I've only been on soarin once and I did have dizziness while I was riding it. It made me feel a little sick, but for the whole first half I was so worked up and terrified that I was shaking.
Once I relaxed on the ride I started feeling a little bit better about it. So I think if you relax you should be fine. Also, since the movement isn't that much you can always shut your eyes, or look to the side. Also, I felt fine after the ride, it was just during that I had problems with dizziness.

It's funny. I don't really feel dizzy when I ride it but I get the sensation that I'm going to fall out of the bench. I still love the ride though.

I don't see how Soarin' would make you dizzy. It might give you a drop-in-the-stomach feeling a couple of times (like going over a bump in the road). And if you are afraid of heights it might make you feel funny (you're not that high off the ground, but the movie makes you think you are). But dizzy - no, I don't think so.

It's a wonderful ride! Makes you feel like you are hang-gliding - but that's something I would never really do, so Soarin let's me pretend that I am.

This is the reason I haven't gone on Soarin' cause I have a terrible fear of heights. With my legs dangling I fear I would feel like I have no support. DD and DH says they will be going on it this March. I really don't think I will be joining them. I will find a nice bench to sit on or a nice store to browse through.

How do you do with ferris wheels??? For me I can't do ferris wheels either. I think it's more the height thing. And if you get in the front row on Soarin' you ARE up quite high..with just a little seatbelt keeping you from falling off your seat. No bar in front of you or anything.

The ferris wheel rides get to me in much the same way as Soarin', too. But Soarin' is even worse, since there is so much movement along with the heights. Not sure which of the two bothered me. (You'd never catch me hang gliding for real!)
I will ride anything at WDW, and love coasters, Star tours, etc. This one does give me a nervous stomach, though.
I love the ride, and recommend riding it unless you really feel that it would make you ill.:faint: I'll ride it again, but close my eyes when necessary.

:rotfl2: no way will you see me on a ferris wheel. did once and my oldest DD made it rock a little bit and I nearly wet my pants. :scared:

Guess there is no way I will be going on Soarin' with just a little seat belt.:scared:

I don't do well with I Max shows so was concerned about Soarin. I took a Dramamine that morning and had no problems. Well, there is one party - night time with lights - that I felt a little dizzy on but I just closed my eyes for a few seconds and was fine.

I'd never heard this. I'm fine with tight pants and spicy foods, but I do really hate feeling tags or sock seams...hmm.

Soarin did make me a bit dizzy. So did Star Tours, Spaceship Earth and pretty much any kind of "virtual" ride. I have trouble shutting off my brain to believe my eyes and it causes me some problems. I find if I just look steadily in one spot for a minute it lessens a great deal and I can then enjoy the rest of the ride. The feeling doesn't completely go away but it is manageable.

Except on "Body Wars" almost left my lunch in that one, I think it was the noises. :rotfl:

I am an Occupational Therapist, and I treat kids with Sensory Processing Disorders every day. Most of the parents don't realize they have their own sensory issues too until they are given examples of things they have just "learned to live with" like knowing they only like certain socks with small or no seams, tagless shirts, elastic pants instead of button/zip type "stiff pants", etc. Those would be some of the tactile type issues. Some people like jalepenos and other spices in their food, while others prefer bland foods or they feel ill (taste issues). Some people can ride on a swing or go on a playground merry-go-round forever without feeling a bit dizzy, and some swing on a tire once or twice around and are falling to the floor (vestibular issues) Some poeple can't take bright sunshine without getting a headache, and some hate dim lighting. These are just a sample of things, but you get the idea...

So, I am not saying everyone has a sensory processing disorder. I am saying that each of us is hyperstimulated in a different way: some are easier to irritate than others! So for some Soarin' may be a piece of cake, while someone else is ill for hours. Just depends on how quick their system is in reacting to the stimulation and how long a recovery time it is for them to settle down...

My best example would be how you react when you have a headache. When you don't have a headache, the kids screaming, or bright lights, or strong smells may not affect you at all (or at least for awhile) ;) . But if you come home from work with a headache, and the dog is barking, and the kitchen lights are bright and your spouse is cooking marinara sauce with alot of basil all you want to do is crawl in your dark bedroom, on your bed and cover your head until the pain subsides. How long you let the headache go before lying down and blocking out all that stim will probably determine how long it will take you to get rid of it. Does that make any sense? Sorry, sometimes its really hard for me to type out good examples!

I've ridden it a few times during two visits. My kids love it. My husband gets queasy on it. My biggest issue is I often feel like I'm going to fall out of my seat. I think I'd feel better if there was a shoulder strap instead of just the lap belt. Then I panick a bit that my kids will lean forward and fall out.

That being said, I think my reaction is part of the sensory experience.

There are times I close my eyes, but in the end, I do like it. But I will say, last week, it took my husband a few hours to feel right after riding it.

I can't stand soarin. I can do any sort of thrill ride, I can go upside down, I can go tea-cuppy spinny, I can do mission space spinny, I can be plunged off the tower of terror, but I cannot do soarin.

I was so terrified that I was going to fall off my seat and into the movie that I just had to sit with my eyes closed - grasping for dear life at the little tiny seat belt...

I will not be doing soarin...ever ....again.

I am so glad I wasnt the only one that felt this way. I am only 27 and the 1st time I went on Soarin I thought I was going to fall out of my seat, I even had dreams later on about me falling out of the seat. I love all rides but for some reason I dont like this one.
This fall I took my daughter there and she so badly wanted to go on it so I took her and made sure she held on and I held onto her very tight. VERY SCARY RIDE

yes yes yes yes yes! This is what bothers me the most. Falling out of my seat. And i was terrified that my kids would fall too.

But then again, I am one of those people who would have a very bad time at the grand canyon...even if I didn't go near the edge, I'd be constantly worried about all the other people near the edge.

so maybe I do have a fear of heights? Maybe that's my real trouble with this ride.

Soarin' is an amazing attraction!

It would be a shame for you to miss it.
But, you could do one of three things.

1. You could do what you said, and just close your eyes.
2. You could do it last, but note that if you're going to do the countires after, don't do it if it'll make you sick.
3. In the ride, I found out that if you look to your far left corner, and just stare there, it won't make you sick.

I hope you will be able to go on it!::yes::
