Will my wife barf?

We can't promise that she won't get sick. I've known people who never get motion sick who are miserable on a cruise, and people who'll be miserably sick on a pretty tame simulator ride, but aren't bothered at all on the sea. Unless you know something of her history with motion sickness, there's no way to predict how she'll do. Medication doesn't help everyone, either. It didn't help me on my first and only cruise.

I'd been wearing SeaBands the first couple of days, just in case. On the third day, I thought, "eh, I'm fine, I'm not wearing these stupid things anymore." Bad move. I went off to breakfast, and by the time I got back to my cabin, OMG. Spent the next several hours in bed, afraid to move, trying to talk myself out of barfing. Medication did nothing. In desperation, I put the SeaBands back on, and before too much longer, I was feeling much better. I didn't take them off again until I was on the bus, headed to the airport. :)

First cruise last year- Dream- room right at front if ship. I did not make in thru dinner and had to rush back to our room and lay down. My husband enjoyed my steak. When he and my daughter came back to room I was in bed feeling very rough. I took Dramamine and had a nice sleep and was fine the next morning. I was sure I would never cruise again but we are leaving for another cruise soon on the Dream again. We were all fine until later on the sea day heading to port. I think it was the speed of the boat that bothered me the most. I have my bonine and Dramamine in my suitcase with some motioneze. The ginger candy did not work for us.

I never get sea sick. My husband often does. His father always does. His sister pukes before she even gets on the ship

My son and I never get sick, even if the ship is rocking like crazy. We also do not get sick in cars or in small zodiac boats. Even in our latest ride on the shuttle from Cozumel to Riviera Maya, during which a third of the boat had their head in a plastic bag, we were ok and laughing about the movement. My wife doesn't get sick if she wears patches. Everyone reacts differently.

My daughter (17 yr old) gets seasick. We have been successful with starting her on Dramamine two nights prior to the cruise and wearing the wristbands (SeaBands) I believe.

The ships are so large and they try to avoid bad weather. I'm hopeful your wife will get it a chance. Maybe a 3 night cruise to try it out?

Good Luck.

My DW gets motion sickness of everything. She swears by SCOP patches (Scopalamine). Your local dr can prescribe them and most won't hesitate. they are easy to put on and last about 3 days per patch. DW finds they work better than mecklazine because she doesn't have to take them as a pill.

Yes, but the good news is everyone feels better after barfing!
Not necessarily, DH gets sea sick and the barfing doesn't stop until he's had IM Compazine.

ETA It definitely does not stop him from cruising, though.

This is my fear too! We are taking our first cruise in January. I'm most worried about DH. He can't (and won't) take any kind of medication. I'll be buying him the sea bands and some ginger candies and hoping for the best. I get very motion sick but I'll take any medication available to prevent it - but he won't, so I'm worried about that. I'm also worried about 'sea legs' that I've read about. We're doing 4 days at WDW following our cruise so hopefully we don't have that problem either.

Is there any chance you can do WDW before your cruise, or are your plans already made?

I would rather go to WDW before the cruise (mostly to avoid being there for President's weekend) but DH doesn't want to. He think we'll too anxious about the cruise to really enjoy WDW. Because we've already been to WDW we know what to expect, but we've never cruised before. Also, my kids are beside-themselves excited about going on a disney cruise ship, I do worry that if we went to WDW first, they'd just keep asking when we are going on the ship.

Just from prior experience, the cruise is so much more relaxing than the parks. Everyone has their different preferences, but for many, it kind of makes sense to do the "unvacation" of the parks first, then get on the cruise to relax, then head home. And honestly, with the motion sickness I experience after the cruise (and don't get me wrong, i love my cruises!!!) there is no way I could enjoy being at the parks; it would be overload on my system. I'm not trying to scare you off, just giving some input. Plus it sounds like you'll have way more crowded park days w/the weekend. And wouldn't they be so excited/busy at the parks, maybe they wouldn't be overly preoccupied? Either way, you'll have a blast; good luck!

Thanks! Unfortunately both weekends before and after the cruise are busy ones, one is marathon weekend and one is presidents weekend. Two years ago, we spent 8 days at WDW, and the only thing my kids talk about is the pool at AKL. I'm going to try my best not to over-plan for WDW and plan for lots of resort time (probably WL), that way if we do get 'sea legs' the kids can just play in the pool. It's nerve-wracking as a first-timer to spend so much money and not know if you're going to be sick the whole time or not. I do sort of agree with DH, that for a first cruise, I want to do it first (I'll be so anxious for it) and then go to WDW. Who knows, I may end up being very wrong about this though.

I have always gotten car sick or motion sickness. BUT, I take Bonine before we leave port and I've never been queasy or sick on our cruises, we've been on 5 now. Tell her to go and take the medicine for precaution. She'll have a ball, you will too!!

my ex husband got very sick on one of our disney cruises, but the seas were so rough, the dining rooms were pretty empty. I do not get sea sick but he does terribly on smaller boats and on bigger boats if the seas are rough enough.

I would

1) take bonine (meclizine)
2) go easy on the booze, especially the red drinks. These are really NOT nice coming back up
3) go easy on the rich foods the first day. this was back in the days of escargot in Lumiere's and I will say that he reports that the combo of escargots and strawberry daiquiri made this an even worse experience than it needed to be.

I wear seabands, take Bonnie and Dramamine and still get sick. If she is prone to bad motion sickness I wouldn't take any chances and get her medication.

When I was growing up, my parents took us on several cruises. I would get horribly seasick to the point that I would have to get a shot in my behind from the doctor on board to help me out. I'd lose the whole day to sleep and usually wake up feeling better the next day. Last year was my first time back on a cruise in about ten years and I was perfectly fine. I was very nervous about it and did use the patch, but I surprised myself (and my parents) and had an amazing time! Ships have definitely gotten better in the 30+ years since my parents took me on the first one!

Sea legs is the ability to walk steadily on the deck of a boat or ship. The phrase is used as a metaphor for adjusting to living/traveling at sea.

I assume you're meaning sea legs as used like this:
Sea legs may also refer to:
Illusion of motion felt on dry land after spending time at sea

Nothing to worry about. It's fun.

I went to my doctor and got the patch. Put it on the night before the cruise and changed them every three days. Our ship was a hitting some rough water and I felt solid. I highly recommend it if you're worried.
