Will my picky husband and children like 'Ohana?

I would really like to try a Disney meal beyond a character buffet, but my DH and DS are really picky. However, they do eat meat, if it isn't in some sort of "weird" sauce. I would love a detailed description of the starters and meat, so I can decide if it is worth spending the money.

'Ohana is fantastic and I think even picky eaters would find something here to enjoy. You can find the menu at this link, http://wdwig.com/menu/menu_oh.htm. The dipping sauces are served on the side and all the meats are served plain. This is one place I desperately want to go back to on next trip.

My 4 yr old dd cried the other night when our server at O'Hana's put a piece of turkey on her plate so we ordered her a grilled cheese. (btw, the turkey was to die for)--you can order children's menu items like chicken fingers, grilled cheese, etc (check Kona Cafe's children's menu for children's selections).

If your dh remotely likes any kind of poultry, beef, pork or seafood or anything grilled he'll like O'Hana's food. The food is really good. There are dipping sauces for the meats, but the meats are flavored lightly but they are delicious. Shrimp is a bit spicey. It is worth a try.

The starters include rice, a mixed green salad with a light lime dressing (good), shrimp and crab dumplings, lightly seasoned chicken wings and a vegetable mix. The meats include a strip type steak, turkey (that's like a tender chicken breast), pork tenderloin and shrimp. Dessert is a sliced pineapple with caramel dipping sauce or can order one of many yummy desserts off the a la carte menu. Everything is all you can eat, I promise you won't leave hungry.

I think this is one of the best "basic" places - grilled meat. They have wonderful sides, but still very familiar.

We just ate there on Monday night. If you like protein and hardly any carbs, this would be the place for you. We had a table of four hungry adults and two kids. We were brought out the same quantities of sides that were given to tables for two. We devoured our one soup bowl-sized portion of rice and one soup bowl portion of salad between the six of us in minutes, and the server didn't ask us if we'd like refills until after the meat came out. So there we sat with our plate fulls of turkey and beef. Don't get me wrong--the food tasted good, but the service was terrible. By the time they came out with another bowl of rice and salad, we were done.

Gee, I hate to hear that Barb! It just goes to show you how service really affects the whole meal and the feelings you have coming away from a restaurant. And how different it can be depending on who you get as a server. We ate at Ohana last summer and had a great server and they kept coming around often with refills and the skewers of meat, turkey, shrimp. My favorites were the shrimp and crab wonton appetizers (and I wouldn't have expected that) and the flank steak. DH and BIL ate EVERYTHING and at one point when the server was taking shrimp off the skewer for my husband and just gave him all of them. I said, "Can you tell we're from Louisiana and like shrimp?" ;) The kids got multiple refills of the chicken wing appetizers but ate all the various meats and of course shrimp! The sauces were to the side which was good because my family doesn't like sauce (unless it's old fashioned gravy) on their meat either. We left stuffed. So to the original poster I think even if you're family are picky eaters they will enjoy it. I'm fairly picky myself but was pleasantly surprised...and full! I just hope you don't get the server that Barb did!

This thread is great for me.....
DH is on a low carb diet and a little worried about our restaurant choices....(thanks Barb I'll show DH your post!)
Also when we were at LTT at Xmas DD and DS hardly ate a thing!
It's good to know they will bring out something else for the picky kiddies!
O'hana's here we come......
Thanks!!

You know I have to agree with Bichon Barb. We've been here 3 times and I hate to say it but the service isn't too good. This past visit it was probably the worst of the 3 visits.

But, it isn't that terrible that I wouldn't want to go back because I'll be back there next trip! The food makes up for it. And, being that there is always something to eat in front of you helps. I just think the servers cover so many tables and there are so many large parties that they just can't give you that full attention like they do at the other restaurants...they can use some extra help here.

I had ordered my dd's grilled cheese when we got the meats and it took a while, most of us were done while she worked on her plate full of rice waiting for the grilled cheese and yes we also ended up with seconds of rice and salad that would have been eaten more if they were brought over sooner.

But, the food is just so yummy!

I don't want to ruin Ohana for anyone. The food tasted great. It just was the way it was served (and the quantity). I think if you go in there armed with info, you can let them know that you'd like seconds of something when the skewers arrive, etc. And yes, the server can make all the difference.

I'm going to start on my restaurant report, and I'll write more about it there.

Chow!
