On our trip to WDW last week, we booked the Wildlife Discovery Excursion at AK for Tuesday morning. It is a 1-hour tour through some of the same areas as the Safari ride. The cost was $45 - 50/person. I highly recommend this tour if you'd like to get thisclose to some of the animals.
We met the tour guides right outside the Safari ride and were taken backstage to a smaller bus. The bus can accommodate about a dozen people and it has room for a wheelchair and/or ECV. Our tour guide was Elana and she was fantastic; our bus driver was Joe.
The tour begins slightly ahead of where the Safari ride starts and begins by following the same path as the ride. Some of the "secrets" about the ride are explained. We quickly pulled off the main rode as we approached some of the elephants. Joe brought us as close as possible so we could watch and we got some great pictures of the 2 baby elephants.
As the tour continued, we followed the safari ride and would pull off on what appeared to be side roads to get closer to the animals. We got very close to the giraffes, one of them getting quite curious about us and tried to get its head inside the windows! After that, it stopped in front of our bus for several minutes, not allowing us to move. (The giraffe finally let us go.)
The zebra and antelope both "challenged" the bus -- trying to knock their heads against the side of the bus. Fascinating behavior. We had several opportunities to take some great photos as Joe found spots to stop allowing us to take all the pictures we wanted.
I believe the tour is offered twice each day and can be booked by anyone.
