Any Wild West sights near Disneyland? We might me doing a trip out West this summer and was wondering if the possibiliy of going to Disneyland while doing the Wild West was probable! :thumbsup2 TIA! :thumbsup2

Not sure what you mean by Wild West sites? California is in the west and it can be pretty wild - but probably not the kind of wild you are interested in. ;)

We're interested in sights like (I know these are in AZ) Tombstone, OK Corral, etc...

There's the Calico Ghost Town. I've never been there but it looks interesting. Here's the link: http://www.calicotown.com/ It's not exactly right next to Anaheim (probably a couple hours away) but I don't think you'll find any wild west stuff very close because of all the cities right there.

The Gene Autrey Western Heritage Museum is pretty cool. We just went in June for a couple of hours. It's got a lot of hands on exhibits, which is especially appealing for kids and child like adults like me and DH. It's located in Echo Park across the parking lot from the LA Zoo. Not Anaheim, but only an hour or two away, depending on traffic...

Here's the link to their website. Looks like they changed the name since I was in middle school. :confused3

This reminds me, there used to be an amusement park called Frontier Village in San Jose. It was all Western themed. Ok, that wasn't anywhere near DLR and it isn't even open now but your question got me thinking about "wild west" things there are. Oh, up north in the gold country near Sacramento there are some old mining towns you can visit and pan for gold. I forgot what it was called but I'm sure you could google that find out. And there is Old Town Sacramento which has wood sidewalks and looks old. There are shops there and stuff. Not near DLR either, but in case you came up north.

Just found out, google ghost towns or mining towns in Calfornia and you will get pages of lists people have made.

As a previous poster mentioned, there's Calico Ghost Town...it's a couple hours drive from Anaheim, but if you're a Wild West history buff, it's definitely worth seeing!

Knott's Berry Farm might give you some of that western flavor, plus the Autry Museum in L.A.'s Griffith Park as previously mentioned. While in the GP area you can hit a studio tour such as Universal Studios (major theme park, but they really shoot movies there) or Warner Brothers. And you can drive by the Disney Studios, which is pretty much between the Autry and Warner Bros.

There is the Roy Rogers museum which I did as a kid. http://www.royrogers.com/museum.html

There are the missions in California. San Juan Capistrano is a good one and not too far from DLR.

Not sure what else you are looking for but Yosemite Nat'l Park is the most spectacular place I have ever seen.

In Colorado you can find Doc Holliday's grave and Wild Bill Hickok's.

Your question made me think of when the Brady Bunch went to a ghost town..:rotfl2:

That's right! Good rule of thumb- If you visit a ghost town don't let any "old timers" give you a tour of the jail. :rotfl: And if you must visit the jail, make sure everyone is wearing socks. ;)

Unfortunately, the Roy Rogers Museum is no longer located in Victorville/Hesperia; it's now in Missouri. And it's going to close soon, which is really too bad, as it was a super-cool museum...I loved the old cars, and of course...Stuffed Trigger!

Oh no! Trigger is gone? And Bullet? I loved Roy Rogers and Dale Evans when I was a kid. Thanks for the update! :)

Calico Ghost town is a neat wild west type of place.

However, I don't think you could really consider it close to Anaheim (its a few hours drive away in the California desert). Its a perfect little place to stop off and visit for a few hours if you are, say, driving from southern California to Las Vegas or Stateline.

Hey! I used to go there! Flashback :hippie:
OK..OT. There is some ranch kind of thing outside Vegas. I don't know anything about it, but someone I knew worked there..maybe it burned down? Can't remember. Knott's has an old West theme, but maybe that is covered up with the Halloween stuff. If you don't mind a long drive you can go to Virginia City. Too bad they closed the Ponderosa Ranch at Tahoe. That was fun.

No it's closed. It closed in the mid '80's to build a Walmart I believe. It was like Knotts but much smaller.

Yes, I know it closed now. Forgot to mention that. I was just rambling. I listen to a DLR podcast and they were saying the condo they record in is built on the old frontier village site. My older cousin worked there as a teenager and my other cousin (my age) and I would go and she would give us bags of little toys that they used for prizes. She worked at one of the game places. I still have it somewhere. :rotfl: Little plastic hot dogs, feet, fish, and other odd items. :) Neat website!
