About to go on first trip as dvc members staying at BLT. Have a question about wifi. can we use our iPod touch wifi in our room? Or is the Internet only available wired in room?

The World is the desert for WiFi. A few oasis do pop up (mostly resort Lobbies) but we found ATT with our iPhones and Blackberries to be the only consistent way to keep in touch with the outside World.

But to be honest, I really do like the isolation.

wolfgang puck marketplace (quick service) has great wifi, I used my itouch there. also you can buy airport express or a belkin and that will configure wifi in your room.

You can bring your home wireless router or get a small portable wireless router such as D-Link. You can hook that up to wall ethernet connection and have wireless in the room.

Our home router only works with our home connection, it's locked to the signal!! Anyone know how much a d-link is and where to get one.? We are in the uk.

You can get a router for as little as $25-30. I would suggest getting a "Travel" router, like the Apple Airport Express. They are a lot more rugged, than your typical home router.

The Airport Express runs about $80 referb off apple's website.

The airport express is awesome and super easy to use. We have one here in the house to control our itunes libraries on our bedroom stereo. It travels with us and is great!

if you have any Apple stores in the UK near you...that would be your best bet....I agree....the Airport Express rocks. Otherwise you can order online.

I've been wondering is there any interest in keeping an archive of DVC configs for routers?

If you're talking about a list of router names and passwords, enabling others to use your router connection if they detect it, remember that internet is only free for members. Disney charges cash resort guests for the service, and as there is no way to prevent non-DVC members from viewing the boards it probably isn't a good idea to post such a list.

Not sure what you are referring to and possibly I am just showing my ignorance of computer terms. I have a D-link portable wireless router that I just set up for access at home with my laptop including giving it a password for access by me and family members. Take it to WDW and just plug it in to the etherernet socket and I can use it but use my own given password to get access. If others had my password and were nearby they could also use it but obviously I don't give out my password to others. As a DVC member you get free access but that is simply determined by your being a DVC member who is staying in the room at that particularly time -- the site has you sign in like anyone else but they don't charge you and know not to charge you because tracking is done by room and if you are a DVC member staying in and using that room's hook-up your room is not charged.

No I mean keeping a set of configuration files that are know to work with a router at DVC. Something you can upload to your router, and it should be right, then you can change your WPA name/password.

I would never advocate letting someone outside of your family/group use your connection, you should read the AUP you have to accept before you use it.

That might be a good idea. We've had trouble on numerous trips getting our Airport Express to work. We finally found some new instructions on the web that worked last time. The difference was setting the Express up as a bridge and that about taps out my wireless knowledge right there!

You don't need to set it as a bridge, although that would/should work, they could be mean and set there switch to only allow 1 IP per port, which would cause it to not work, once you tried to have more than 1 device on the airport.

The real answer is that you need to set it up with an IP network (like 172.16/16) which doesn't overlap with the one that DVC uses (10/8.) And you may have to acknowledge the "double NAT" error.

The "safe" networks to use are 10/8, 192.168/16 and 172.16/16. These are referred to RFC 1918 networks. They are all private networks, and no one should be using them, nor should any ISP ever route them.

We keep a router just for trips, it comes in handy not to have to reconfigure it all the time. Good information here:

If you ask the cast members they will say it's not allowed, but you can set it up. I don't know how we'd survive without it. Only one of us could use the internet at the time. The horror!

I'll post a link later to a good article about setting it up.

We're at OKW right now and here are the relevant settings I'm using on my Apple AirPort Express...

I've used both my MacBook Pro and iPhone at the same time on wifi through the AirPort Express. I've gone back to 3G for the iPhone because every time the iPhone wakes from sleep mode or I return to my unit I need to log in before I can use the wifi. It's a pit of a pain while 3G works just fine without the hassle.

Please correct me if I am wrong, but you are setting it up to go from "Wired" to "Wireless" If you set it as a bridge, the "network" doesn't know that, if you are using DHCP. It would only be an issue if they restricted your IP and made you use a Static IP....as long as their network is DHCP....you shouldn't ever have an issue.

I don't know whether you're referring to my setup, but if you are...

I had originally set the Connection Sharing to Share a public IP address, but the wifi didn't work. I thought Bridge Mode was the next best parameter and it works just fine.

I have had one MB Pro and 3 iPhones using the wifi at the same time with no problem at all.

ITA.
I am a networking idiot, but if the OP gets an Airport Express I think that the OP will need to configure it with a computer, right? So if the OP does not bring a laptop to WDW then the configuration of the Airport Express for the iTouch will need to be done pre-trip?
