WiFi in rooms if I bring my router

I need some tech advice. If I bring my router from home, can I simply plug it in to the provided ethernet cable and get wifi in my room? I'd rather not lug my laptop down, if I could get wifi and use my iPhone. My router is a fraction of the size if my laptop, and could be stowed in my checked luggage.

You could if you are willing to pay the 10/day charge for internet there.

Unless you for some reason are going to be doing very heavy data transfers and you have an iPhone, I would recommend researching jailbreaking it and getting MyWi and using your provider's data connection to connect to your laptop.

Or just use your 3G connection on your phone. It sounds like you want to avoid bringing a laptop. The 3G data connection was good enough on ATT when I was there to do this.

Since I'm from Canada I have to pay international roaming when using 3G. Just want access to email and flight check in.

1) Absolutely.
2) But, as mentioned, you still pay the Internet daily rate.
3) But, I always recommend a portable router.
4) Whether phone or laptop, it is a lot easier than working at the table.
5) Just make certain you have the security set.

Yep. I'm a DVC member, so we don't pay for our internet service. I always bring my D-link travel router (it's tiny, the size of a deck of cards). I plug it in and can use my netbook anywhere I want in our room. Keep in mind that since you have to pay a daily fee, you can pick and choose which days your want to pay. (Also, you must have a credit card listed on your room or you will not be able to sign up.) You could sign up in the afternoon one day, and still use it until the 24 hour mark the next day, sort of like only paying every other day. Also, you may want to make sure your router is password protected, because if it isn't, alot of folks will be using your wireless connection.

Yes. I take my router from home and just put the cable to the router and it sends out the signal. Since it's the same as the one I use at home, my laptop picks it right up. My friend signs on with her laptop or I-touch and she finds my signal, I give her my password and she's on.

That's all I ever need my laptop/netbook for when we're at WDW, and I get by with dialup. Just load a free service like Netzero and with local calls being free, it's quite adequate.

I am a dvc member so I know that I will be free to use the ethernet.
My question is ...I hook up ethernet wire to my router directly.Then I just connect via wifi.Do I get on my nextbook the agreement of terms and the message that I have for 24hrs.?I usually bring the laptop but i want to scale down.Would hate to bring the small wifi router that I know would work here but get out there and since the"mouse"controls my hookup get locked out?
Am I over analyzing or will this work this easy and I JUST CONFIRM on the nextbook and connect?

Yes, every 24 hours you'll get the agreement page before you can do anything. You just agree and click and you're good for another 24 hours.

The last several times we've been at WDW, there were several wide open wifi signals named things like DLink and Netgear that I could easily connect to. Unless you want people connecting to your router and getting you charged $9.95 every day, definitely use encryption and consider unplugging your router while you're not in the room.

It doesn't have to be wpa2. Any security will do. Some travel routers only do wep and are fine.

No, not just like at home. You have to disable dhcp inside your router, thus turning your router into an access point / switch.

Easy to do if you are the slightest bit computer savvy. You have to do this because you are behind disneys firewal and router and it will assign the ip address to your machine (what dhcp does).

I understand the 9.95 per 24 hrs,but I would get mine free since I am dvc member why would I need to be careful if someone hijack my wifi ,would I still get billed.With the way people hack crap I do not want a bill for something I thought was free.

I am trying to see what router is best to travel with also..I have a nextbook.

I wasn't going to bother with the laptop. I am, however, planning to bring my iPad and using the 3G to connect to the internet. Has anybody done that, and were you able to get a decent connection? We'll be at BWI.

Is the ethernet-to-router WiFi much faster than the WiFi available in the hotel lobby? We made the mistake of paying for the lobby WiFi at the Contemporary last year, and it could not have been slower! If DH can use his iPod in our room with reasonable speed he will be a happy camper!

I am planning on using my cell phone as a hot spot. That way I can run the IPAD and the laptop. It will only cost me $20, instead of the $10 a day.

how is this done?

Nope just plug your router in to the Ethernet connection and it will work right out of the box. The buildings switch will assign your router an IP address then your router will assign your computer/phone/pad a IP address. No need to set it up as anything. Just plug it in and you are good to go.
