Why would they do this--sports team related?

I think maybe some posters aren't familiar with high school level sports? My dds' have always played softball and they know that softball comes first but many of the teams they have been on have had girls who blew off games and practices for parties or just because they didn't feel like playing. I never allowed that. You join a team and you make a committment to that team. However, I was still suprised when my dd made the high school softball team that there were practices/games during spring break. No excuses. Family vacation? Too bad, you go away with your family then you will sit on the bench. That was just JV, varsity is even more strict. My dd knows that going in. Next year, her 16th b-day is during spring break. She wants to go away but knows that if she is playing ball, then that's not going to happen. I don't presume to know this girls reasons for having a party at the same time as a tournament but it's a party, I really can't foresee any reasons that would be a valid excuse for not delaying it by 2 hours.

Why don't they start the season earlier or end it earlier?

That is really not the point at all. The point is it has worked for years as it is...but the girl in question decided to put herself before the team. (By the way a lot of thought is put into schedules, including when other sports end so another can begin for multi-sport athletes.)

Because we live in Minnesota and it is hard to golf in the snow. The season starts middle of March and ends with the state tournament in the middle of June. That is just the way it is, this has been on the calendar for a year now, there is no reason they could not have planned around this tournament--even scheduling it 2 hours later would have solved the problem.

If the girl graduated before the playoffs, she is no longer a member of the high school and does not have any responsibility to the golf team.

Heck, the high school sports association should probably not even let her play.

Either that, or they should have scheduled playoffs earlier in the year.

You really said this. No tongue in cheek.......::sad2: Honestly, it says a lot about the girls character.

But she's not even a member of the school at that point. I don't see why she should be guilted into playing on a team (where she is the least important member) AFTER she had already finished her schooling.

No, but there is a "ME".

I agree with this. There is a subtlety there that the kid will ultimately pay for. My son plays AAU. Going in, it's understood that that comes before other team sports and things like vacations, parties and other recreational events. Yet people still blow off games and tournaments and then wonder why their kid isn't playing much or isn't asked back to the team next year. From a coach's perspective, they're leaving the team high and dry, while other kids are there working their butts off and have made the choice to give up other things to be there as well. It boils down to, at least by appearance, that they don't care about the team, so why should the team care about them? Disagree with me all you want - I've seen it. Last year a parent was overheard by the coach's wife trashing him to another parent. Do you think that kid was asked to be back on the team this year? There were also parents that hid the fact from the coach at a regional tournament, the event they'd worked for all year (literally), that they were going to pull their kids out toward the end of the game so they could let them play in their town All Star games, when other kids had given up their All Star spots knowing they had a commitment to the tournament. How is that fair to everyone on the team? And these are the same people complaining about everything. Don't think the coaches and team members don't know it and see it. Like it or not, this is the reality of what happens.

I don't see why it is hard to understand, regardless of whether you agree with it. School's done. The student graduated. It's summer vacation.

It's called commitment. Something that is very important in ones life.

I am guessing you have never seriously played on any type of athletic team.

She went into the season fully knowing when playoffs were AND that they would be held after the school year ended. As the OP has stated, the other seniors are in it till the end, and I'll bet they are happily and proudly representing their team and their school.

Our high school has softball/baseball in the summer. Graduated seniors play the full season.

I agree. I think some of the posters on this thread are anti-sports. Which is fine, but a commitment is a commitment, IMO.

Thanks. That explains a lot. We see your point of view, really. Every person for himself. Works well in team situations.

That sucks. School is done. Those kids are off to college in the fall.

Not anti-sports at all. But the senior isn't part of the school anymore. She doesn't have a commitment to a school's team if she already graduated from it.

But that's what I'm saying. The girl's commitment is FINISHED. She's done with school.

You just don't understand, and more than likely never will. You look at a commitment as being one thing at a time, I look at it as someones character. Commitment covers who you are. When you sign up for something, you go until its finished. You don't stop when it becomes an inconvenience to you. Honestly, I would drop her from the team, and promote the next player in line. I would want someone committed to the team playing for me.

When she joined the team, she knew how long she would be expected to play. Heck, ds12 played in a travel soccer game a couple hours after he made his 1st Communion - no party for him. This girl made a committment to the team when she signed on, a committment that should end at the end of the season, regardless of graduation.

Actually, school ISN'T done until the end of the day Friday for the seniors. They don't graduate until Saturday so she is STILL in school. Again, your argument is pointless. ALL seniors go into a spring sports season knowing that the tournaments will be at or past graduation time. She could have chosen not to play if that was really an issue for her. This is the same for all seniors in ALL spring sports, track, baseball, softball, tennis, golf. There are 2 other seniors on the team, as well as 5 seniors on the boys team and she is the only one that has this conflict.
