Why would someone say this to a 4 1/2 year old?? -

I'll admit that when I read the OP, it did hit me as kind of strange. Not having anything to do with respect for the military or being "ridiculous"; however, my DH was in the military back in the "dark ages" I guess and it was fairly difficult to get clothes that looked like military clothes. I remember when they started wearing the battle dress uniforms and civilians were always trying to get the uniforms from them to wear around. I swear I think there was some law or something that civilians were not supposed to try to replicate military uniforms even for innocent purposes. So, I guess if I saw that, for those reasons, I would be taken aback. But, it was a long time ago and I'm probably not remembering correctly.

But, I certainly would have NEVER, EVER said anything.

If I'm going to make a comment to a stranger's child, it's going to be a positive one. The woman should have kept her mouth shut.

I used to like Army clothes from a "fashion" standpoint back when I was a teen (a long time ago), and I had thought of buying camouflage pants for my son. But since the war, I honestly can't bring myself to see him wearing them; he's 12 now, and he's fast appoaching the time when war could become way too real for him.

Camouflage was very popular with the boys in my neighborhood when school started last fall. Those folks at the buffet would be freaking out if they saw the kids on our block.

Now all the boys seem to wearing basketball clothes--big, long, satin shorts and tank-style jerseys.

All I can say is that your son is adorable and the only thing I would have said to him would be to let him know how completely precious he is. Don't let people like her get to you. They are not worth your time. You must be very proud of your little soldier.
