Luke looks adorable!! And I can totally relate. My father was an air force pilot and I grew up loving the military. He took me to air shows, we'd watch military movies together, read books on the military, and have great conversations about his days in the air force. My only regret is that he died when I was 17 and I only wish I had more time to spend with him to hear all about his life. He truly was my hero and I respect all military men and women as a result. And yes, I too had my own little set of fatigues that I wore all the time, until I was about 11 or 12!

My 2nd son loved his batman costume & red boots.
Always had them on.

On the contrary, I explicitly understand the love, respect and admiration you have for your military members, considering I have been sleeping with a "man in uniform" for 17 years. My husband, a member of the C.A.F for more than 20 years, spent 7 months in Afghanistan helping fight the War on Terror. I gave an opinion, which I thought was expressed honestly and without rudeness. Unfortunately, you cannot say the same as your post was designed to minimize and insult.

I made ONE statement, and I didn't expect anyone to agree with me! I can't exactly put my finger on why the outfit would have seemed inappropriate to me, maybe for the same reasons that other people don't like to see children playing with guns or army toys. I guess it would just be a knee jerk reaction to seeing a child "playing at war" by dressing like a soldier. However, I would never have made a comment about to the child.

By the same token, I would probably think that seeing a child dressed in ANY type of costume was a little ridiculous and inappropriate, if it wasn't in an appropriate venu ( i.e princess costumes at Disney, etc) but that's just me. I didn't dress my kids that way, so I guess I just don't have a lot of patience for it. My problem, obviously.

My son didn't stop wearing his cape until first grade.. I remember being so frustrated with him - he finally stopped wearing it when one of the ties came off and my sewing machine was "broke".. BUT some of my fondest memories of him at that age are him running across the yard with the red cape flying behind him!

My son is 24 now but when he was little he was always wanting to dress like GI Joe in his camouflage outfit. When I was little, my brothers were always dressing up like cowboys. This has been going on for decades, I don't think there's anything unusal about it.
It certainly was none of that women's business, how dare she speak to your son that way.

When my ds was 4, he thought he was a cowboy (he very liked Toy Story at that age, he thought he was dressing up as Woody ). He'd wear his cowboy hat and cowboy boots proudly.

Very well said. I agree 100%. I would never have said anything to any child no matter what they were wearing. Even if it was the teen in a belly showing t-shirt. Not my child not my business. As I would not say anything to an adult wearing something that I thought was inappropriate. Again not my business.

Personally I would have thought that your son was cute and probably would have said such to him. Because it is a positive statement and children love to hear they look cute.

That's fine if you have your opinion(s), but what the woman did was rude.

People let their kids wear camo or military gear because of their pride for the military or for whatever reason - not necessarily to glorify war. Kids don't have a political agenda... ... and not everything has to be PC, especially to a 4.5yo child.
