Why would anyone do this to another human being?

4 suicides (reported) in as many weeks due to bullying. It makes my heart ache.

Dave Navarro released this wonderful statement:

"Ok everybody, here is the deal. I cannot imagine what it’s like growing up in a close minded environment and being gay, bi or tans-gender. I don’t think any of us who aren’t can possibly imagine. The strength and character it must take to stay true to yourself in such an unforgiving microcosm are qualities that a major portion of the world lacks… Sad, but true. It’s just how it is at the moment. However, it’s that very strength and character that gives the world hope for a new way of thinking and acceptance in the future and when one of our children gives in and gives up, it is not only a tragedy but a victory for those who fear diversity. DO NOT LET THEM WIN! I know how overwhelming the feelings can get and how small the reality can feel, but the bottom line is that this is but a drop in the bucket in terms of the magnitude of life. You can get through this. High school is full of plenty of bullies and fear based hate, as is the world. With any group of people comes a percentage of people who just don’t get it and probably will never get it. That’s OK. We all deal with this to an extent. The truth is that in High School, you are kind of stuck in the group you are a part of until graduation, but trust me… You can pick and choose who you associate with and there are plenty of like-minded people in the world that are understanding, accepting and loving. Sometimes, we just have to stick it out to meet them. The hard cold reality is that once you have chosen suicide, that’s it. No going back. Sure, there is a public outcry and MAYBE the bullies feel remorse for a while, but it all dies down, life goes on, the bullies let the memory fade and get on with their lives. They learn to laugh, love, reach their goals and in many cases go on to have a full and productive life. Who loses? You do! Your family! Your friends! Other teens who need support in this area! Oh yeah… We all Lose! Now the world has one less mind that is open and different and unique and sensitive. Instead, we inherit the bullies, the fear, the set back… Our world has one less soul to help it evolve with a new level of clarity. Personally, I have seen a lot of darkness and tragedy that has felt insurmountable. The murder of my mother, my battle with drug addiction, the loss of friends and family. Utter depression and despair. Of course the thought of suicide has crossed my mind a time or two. Let me share this. THANK GOD I never took that action. The friends I have made, the experiences I have had, the laughter I have shared would have all been missed. In hindsight, some of my darkest moments now seem so small and insignificant that I am amazed I gave them so much power at the time. I am even able to laugh about it now. When I think back to the times I have considered ending it all I end up saying to myself, “What was I thinking?” To those of you contemplating such a course, please do us a favor. Seek counseling first. Find a network of people who have gone through what you are going through. Help others in even more turmoil than you. I am certain that you can find peace. As you know, our society and political climate is SO divided right now. We need your voice. The world at large needs your sheer existence in order to come to terms with itself and where we are going as a planet and species."

Terrible story. ONe life lost, two ruined. To call the web cam guy's move STUPID is beyond an understatment.

When I heard about the video on my local noon news, I was disgusted. When I got an email from Rutgers (DH teaches there PT in the spring, so he's on the distribution list) last night, I was sickened. My initial reaction was that the legal charges were way too minor.

While it is sad what happened let's remember that this is just a plain old stupid prank that lead to an awfully bad outcome.

Should the kids who did this be punished. Yes. Should their lives be ruined because of it - probably not.

I don't believe in a million years they ever imagined that the kid would commit suicide.

They were having a discussion about the on "Morning Joe" today and their were arguments on both sides.

At BEST this "stupid prank" was a highly illegal invasion of privacy on par with such disgusting ploys as those landlords who put cameras in the bathrooms and bedrooms of the innocent women who rent from them (and who have been sent to jail because of it). But since he chose to broadcast this on the internet, I find it WAY worse and reprehensible than just secretly videotaping.

This story just made me sick! I am fed up. This is 2010, get with the times. Gay people are HERE TO STAY so deal with it and get the you know what over it!

I hope they are expelled and go to jail for some time.

A prank is putting vaseline on the door. Broadcasting someone having sex on the internet withour their knowledge or consent goes WELL beyond prank!

:thumbsup2

I would hardly call what these 2 did a stupid prank. It's way beyond that.

Two students attending Rutgers *should* be smart enough to know that their actions would be highly illegal and went well beyond prank level. Exposing someone's sexuality by word of mouth is nasty enough, but to actually invade their roommate's privacy and broadcast his sex acts is downright heinous.

Why shouldn't their lives be ruined? This wasn't a momentary lapse like, say, getting behind the wheel drunk. Drunk drivers who kill someone are punished severely. This plan took forethought and malice, which in my mind is even worse. I'm not trying to actually compare the crimes, but the outcome. Somebody is dead as a result of somebody else's actions.

Our legal system has to keep up with technology. To me, secretly taping someone having sex and putting it online should be as serious as an offense as rape.

I completely agree.

It was not just a stupid old prank. I can only imagine how violated and humilated this young man felt. His roomate broadcasted this twice!!! These 2 deserve their lives to be ruined. They have ruined many peoples lives by their actions.

Would those two idiots have posted the videos if Tyler had been with a girl? I doubt it. I can't imagine what his family must be going through.:guilty:

The choices that we make do have an effect on other people.

[Bolding mine] Well, Tyler's life certainly was ruined because of it. I'm sure though that no amount of jail time will compare to the guilt that they will hopefully live with the rest of their lives. Their stupid, mean, thoughtless and immature move caused another to take their own life. I hope they remember him and what they did everyday for the rest of their lives.

So, Dharun Ravi went to Molly's room when his roommate wanted privacy. Ravi was the one who posted this on twitter and he was the one who streamed it on the video. Why is Molly getting charged? Because it happened in her room or did she have a more active role?

I agree. I cannot imagine how this horrendous deed could be considered a prank. This was a malicious act against another person.

I think you are on the money. While I do not advocate driving drunk I understand taht that lapse in judgement does happen. The punishment of there is an accident that results in a death is harsh, as it shoud be. When someone plans to post private video on the internet in order to embarrrass that person that act should be punished severely as well. A young man is dead as a result of this terrible action.

You have got to be kidding me? What a load of you know what!!!!!

They ought to be glad I'm not the mother of the poor young man who died because as I told my DD last night I'd kill them! Because I don't know how I would live with myself if he were mine mainly because I'm sure she is feeling so guilty. Here he was at a place she probably encouraged him to go to that she sent him to get an education, probably talked him thru his nervousness, told him he'd be fine at school and in reality she sent him to his death.

These were not children these were adults! They need to pay for what they did.

It is obvious you have never had a child who has dealt with these kind of nasty bulllies but I'm sure these were the mean girl type bullies in high school

Off my rant but this really make me want to scream to the colleges that they need to have some sort of questionnaire when placing roommates to prevent this and it isn't always a problem that can be worked out like how messy the room can be. It can be a matter of life or death.
