Why Won't You Sit With Us?

I have absolutely no issues or aversion to sharing a table. Honestly, when you eat at any of the packed restaurants at WDW, you might as well be sharing a table. We were 8 inches from the next table at CP, about that at CRT, and not much more than that at Ohana. Those tables are snug, too!

I was going to say this! On our last visit to LeCellier, our neighbors weren't any further away from us than our table mates at Biergarten, although technically we weren't sharing a table. So the issue here isn't really body odor, lip-smacking, perfume or any of those other things- it's purely social. Some people don't like being expected to socialize with strangers during their meals. Some do.
I think that Biergarten and Teppan Edo do an excellent job of letting people know that the tables are shared. I don't think a whole lot of people walk in now unprepared for the experience.

3) I used to travel quite extensively (over 80,000 airline miles per year).
4) I always asked the host/hostess to seat me with other singles for a meal.
5) The dinner conversation was seldom dull.

We almost moved to the UK but didn't because DD was born when they wanted us to move. But she would have been adorable with a British accent!

Cor blimey Guv, there are British accents and then there British accents, dont y'know.
There are some parts of this fair land where the accents aren't so much cut glass as broken glass!

I must agree with those that say it's different strokes for diferent folks. You pay a lot for your holiday and how you spend it is entirely up to you. There isn't a right or wrong answer. Tiddly poop.

Didn't read all the posts, but for me it's all about table manners or lack thereof. I'm not talking about using the wrong fork, elbows on the table or not putting your napkin on your lap... There are SO many people with nasty table habits that would just ruin the meal for me. Seriously, someone chewing with their mouth open, eating like they haven't had a decent meal in 3 weeks, licking fingers, not using napkins, burping, it all makes me want to vomit.

I hate sharing a table. Hate hate hate hate hate it. ESPECIALLY when I'm alone.

I find conversation difficult and exhausting. When I eat, I want to relax and eat, not talk.

My family understands this and doesn't care if I don't hold up my end of the conversation.

Well, not US, but people in general -- why is it people (Americans in particular) seem to hate sharing a table with others, as in Biergarten or other large table restaurants?

Why do YOU hate it?

I don't DISLIKE it at all....I Love meeting other Disney People! We always meet great people! We did this year..............and she said she was on the boards actually..........though neither wanted to give our tags names ...too much fun wondering............is that YOU

My daughter and I often travel to the world alone, and we don't mind sharing a table with others. We met some folks from Germany last time we were at Biergarten, which made it twice as nice. I hate it when people can't find a spot to sit and they are forced to walk around with their trays of food. So we often share our table with other small parties.
That being said - I am a huge germophobe. I would prefer to sit alone if we or you are contagious - please Anything else is ok.

I dont mind it, actually its welcoming towards the end of our trip. After 5 - 6 days, you start to crave adult conversation with someone other than your spouse.

On the other hand, Im a little tired of listening to my own kids past day 5..sometimes I'd just rather not have to listen to others as well...

On the other hand..other kids in another family sometimes keep my kids entertained..

On the other hand...other kids can be spoiled brats anbd Id rather not have apple juice spilled all over me by someone elses kid...

With all those hands...I can honestly say I have done the BBQ a couple of times and enjoyed everyone I sat with. Hopefully, my luck wont run out. I have Biergarten and the BBQ planned for Oct.

I always feel sorry for the people who have to sit beside my DS11. He has never met a person he couldn't talk to! Once he talked to 2 girls in line for almost an hour before I realized they didn't even speak English! They were very sweet they just smiled, nodded, and laughed when he did!!!

My children just said the other day they can't way to go back to Biergarten and think it is so neat how we get to share tables with other people. However those other people never seem to want to talk to us, we have tried, I mean we use forks and napkins, we are polite, just hope this year we have some one to get to know!

it depends on the situation, there are certainly times we like to have a nice quiet dinner but typically we enjoy meeting others. Love some of the signature events at the food wine where you are seated at tables with others. When we had resizes at the V&A chefs table we even checked if they would offer the remaining seats to another couple on the wait list, which they wouldn't do.

We never mind sharing a table at either a table service like Biergarten or at a crowded QS. At table service it is nice to chat with other people, although my daughter will talk your ear off if you let her! If others don't seem to want to talk, then we just cooperate in that wish.

And at a crowded QS it just seems wrong to not offer an empty seat to someone wandering around with a tray of food and no place to sit down.

Many (many) years ago, I took a ski trip to Austria and Germany with my high school. The person running the trip told us up front that when we break for lunch the cafeteria seating is not like in the US. He explained that people will just sit down if the seat is empty and they do not have to know you to do it. He encouraged all of us to do the same. Of course the first table I chose to sit at ended up being with Americans who lived about an hour away from me!

I dont mind sitting with strangers. I have dined alone many times. My DH does not like it. He is not a talker and dislikes people trying to engage him in conversations. He prefers to be left alone. I told him he is really missing out; but he disagrees.

This is the reason we have not tried the Biergarten, he just refuses to give it a try.

I don't *hate* it. I've shared tables at hibachi restaurants, places in China Town in NYC, and at big events. It's not my favorite, because I'm a really shy person. I have a hard time making conversation with people I don't know, but I feel awkward just sitting there at the same table and not even attempting to chat. But so often, people don't want to talk to you...

I'd just rather have my own table; saves me a lot of internal worry!

I don't mind (although if the people I'm sharing with turn out to be horrors then I would mind ). I've shared tables lots of times with strangers when eating in Chinatown. And a lot of the restaurants I go to are so small you are practically eating at the same table with your neighbors.
