Why We Can't Have Nice Things...

abreva (cold sore meds) during the hours the pharmacy is closed.

yup-apparently it's a popular otc to shoplift so many places only have it behind the pharmacy counter so you're s.o.l. if you start to get a cold sore outside the hours the pharmacy is open.

Inspired by my working in retail 20 years ago - getting a complementary gift box (if needed, by request, at any cashier) when making a purchase in a store. People would buy 1 item, but "I want [3, 4, 5] boxes." So our store no longer allowed boxes at the cashier; customers had to go to Customer Service and show their purchases - and receipts, because they still wanted boxes for purchases that weren't from our store.
FYI: As of right now, you can still get gift boxes at Lord & Taylor.

Cough and cold meds were banned for children under 6 because of idiot parents who overdosed their kids.

"the FDA completed a review that found that between 1969 and the fall of 2006, there were 54 reported child deaths from decongestants"
(out of how many children that took decongestants during those years?)
""The Consumer Healthcare Products Association said the products were being pulled "out of an abundance of caution." Potential misuse of the medications, not product safety, is driving the voluntary withdrawal, the group said."
http://www.cnn.com/2007/HEALTH/10/19/coldmed.fda/index.html
My daughter’s pediatrician advised me not to give it to her as well as my best friend who is a pediatric nurse. They both told me that cough medicine is bad for babies. I always followed their directions and DD was fine without that medication.

I'll add to the list:

  • Really good mainstream dramatic movies that starred famous actors and had great production values.

These days, it seems like everything is either a super-hero story, a military/cop/detective/spy story, a rom-com, a family animated movie, science fiction, horror film, or a quirky little art-house drama that few people see.

I miss the serious yet popular dramas with big budgets & famous stars. There used to be a few of those every year (Schindler's List, Out of Africa, the Godfather, Shawshank Redemption, Reversal of Fortune, Brokeback Mountain, etc.), but now they're a seriously endangered species, possibly extinct.

I hate the fact that there are so many remakes! Instead of going with an interesting, original idea for a movie, they just remake something that didn’t even need remade. I know it is just a matter of time before they remake (and butcher) my beloved Back to the Future :(

I have a friend who had his wisdom teeth out and they told him to take Advil. No rx meds!! It’s crazy.
I declined Percocet following my emergency C-section. I had to be under anesthesia during her birth because my epidural didn't work, so I woke up very loopy. I not only wanted to be alert to enjoy my newborn, I wanted to nurse her, so they gave me Motrin. It worked very well. Since then, I choose not to take any opiates for pain. I don't even want cough medicine with codeine. Prescription strength Motrin takes away the pain, I feel like myself, and I don't have to worry about becoming dependent on them.

Doctors are not being careful when they prescribe megadose ibuprofin (Advil). I've had two different doctors talk that up in relation to my arthritis. However, in some people those megadoses can trigger tinnitus, a ringing of the ears, that does not go away after stopping the medication.

I’m with you on this. Between security issues and over-regulation there are tons of non-prescription meds in Canada that are only available behind the counter. Some really mundane stuff too like motion-sickness pills and lice shampoo. Very, very inconvenient.

I’ve never quite understood this. Prescription-strength ibuprofen is just lots and lots of regular-strength ibuprofen so why bother with the rx? I do agree with @Shanti that we can be too cavalier about the potential side-effects of OTC meds though. I gave myself a raging bout of (politely put) gastrointestinal upset by double-dosing naproxen recently. It was a real wake-up call.

Yeah that a bit nuts. I actually remember that happening to me as well years ago. I ended up punching a hole in the wall due to the pain. I don't get whylester, non-opiste pain killers like Tamadrol aren't legal in the US, while they are in other countries. Or just prescribe THC or something along those lines.

I know a lot of people who would prefer to sleep through the aftermath of wisdom teeth removal. Pretty different from one's priorities after giving birth. Plus no concerns about passing it on to a newborn through breastfeeding.

Really depends on how easily they come out. Often, it’s a simple extraction (2 of mine were. 2 required removal of part of my jaw).

The narcotic one I understand. People get on them because they really do need them, but they get too easily addicted. Those should only be around for the most extreme of cases.
But a doctor should be the one who makes that decision. Not lawmakers.

I've had doctors load me up on so many NSAIDS that I had a ulcer. But still no pain pills, now I'm just suppose to suck it up.

Yep. I had someone suggest "Arthritis strength Tylenol" for my lupus and RA, since I couldn't take Mobic or Motrin. I guess she didn't know that it was just special packaging on the normal 8 hour Tylenol. Special Packaging doesn't actually help pain. I can read special packaging all day long, and I am still in the same pain I was before.

And all OTC painkillers can have serious side effects in large doses. Doctors ignore that when they prescribe them willy nilly, thinking, "Well, at least they aren't opiates. I can't get sued for prescribing this, because most patients take it over the counter, anyway..." Some of the OTC painkillers can have worse side effects than opiates for some patients when taken in rx-strength doses.

I'm sure the suggestion was given with helpful intent, hoping to offer you some relief.

I agree that all medications have side effects.

I have arthritis, chronic back pain, and a torn meniscus. I only take Advil when I cannot take it any longer. I see a chiropractor who uses acupuncture to control my pain. Nothing works as well as that. I get weekly massages as part of my treatment. I prefer to use homeopathic methods to address the pain rather than mask it with medication.

I have to take asthma meds, which have lousy side effects, but I like breathing, so I have no choice. It’s all about balance.

I will always avoid opiates at all cost. I would prefer not becoming addicted. I’m funny that way.
