Why We Can't Have Nice Things...

I see. You're right. I don't think I've ever seen that option either. Our debit is automatically deducted from our checking account.
I tried to google an image to show you what I meant but didn't find anything quite right. And now that I think about it, when I use the "tap" payment function on my card it doesn't ask either. I rarely ever use that (feels to cutting-edge for me :rotfl:) but I should check my account to see where the payment is being taken out of.

:scratchin Every notice how in the States when you're paying with debit the machine doesn't give you a choice which account you want the payment to come out of? We've got 2 accounts linked to our card and are used to using each of them for separate things. In the States I'm not even sure which account they're drawing from until I check my accounts. :confused3

Not referring to ATM's; of course you can choose when you're using a bank machine. Here though, when you use debit at point-of-purchase you must select which account you want the funds withdrawn from. I've never seen that option on a retail debit machine in the States.

Here, at least for people I know, each card they have is linked to a different account.

I don't have a card for my money market account but I have a joint checking with my husband which equals a card for that, I have a checking account for me which equals a card for that, and I have a credit card account which equals a card for that. So in all I have 3 different cards for 3 different accounts all with different card numbers and cvv's.

Now all of mine are connected together via online banking so I can transfer money between my money market, my joint checking with my husband, my checking account and my credit card.

I believe the reason you're not seeing that option is because that's not how we really how our banking institutions are set up (to my knowledge at least).

I edited my post, after you saw it. We do have cards that allow us to choose debit or credit, but that's the only options I've seen at checkout.

ETA: I'm right there with you on things being too cutting-edge for me. If I didn't have my DH, I'd be in trouble. :o

The welcome wagon, they used to welcome new people to their new homes.
I thought it was quite nice when we moved into our new home the Welcoming Committee for our HOA dropped by with a serving tray wrapped up with local coupons, a zucchini bread made by a couple living in the neighborhood and a few other papers regarding things to do in the area.

Our builder (as we had our house built) also gave us a 24 pack of water (with moving day in mind) and a tool kit that came with all sorts of things (like hammer, screw drivers, measuring tape, level, etc) . I loved the tool kit because it was one made for smaller hands (I know sometimes it's marketed as for women ugh).

Those little touches really make you feel welcome, wish all places did that sort of stuff.

LOL - that's one thing we do not have - dual debit/credit cards. They're either one or the other. Seems like there are quite a few ways our systems are different. I wish now just for research I'd tried my debit card while I was in Europe last year. I wonder if their system is similar to yours, ours or completely different yet again?

Oh Dear Lord, my DH deposits cheques by taking pictures of them with his phone - I can't even...:faint:

Medication bottles you can open.
Had to laugh when I read this- I recently bought 2 bottles of ibuprofen liquid gels. They read "easy open cap," but I didn't really process that. I came home and used them and realized they didn't have the "safety top." My husband and I were actually confused at first because we're so used to the safety tops on medication bottles and the tops came right off like a normal bottle- we didn't know they made these kind any more- labeled "not for households with small children."

Businesses may have the devices for chip but not the programming turned on and it took a while even to get the new devices that would accept chip cards.

It's been a multi-year transition with some places or businesses still not being fully transitioned.

Rite Aid took about a full year to transition over. I remember when the deadline came for businesses to switch over. Customers were getting trained everywhere to insert the chip instead of swiping. Only Rite Aid still hadn't made the switch. They used to YELL at us, "NO. SWIPE YOUR CARD. :scared::duck: Now, they finally switched to the chip and they are yelling at us to insert the chip. :duck: :sad2:

I think it's automatically linked to take from one's checking account. As previous to paying by debit cards, one could write a check for purchases. So the debit card replaces the check and takes the money directly out of the checking account.

I’m so glad that our bank finally got with the times and offers picture deposit. We don’t have a bank nearby and so it was a pita to have to go to a bank just to deposit a cheque.

If you contact your bank, they can tell you what account your ‘tap’ is linked to. You can change it if you want and you can also set the limit on how much you can ‘tap’. That way, if your card is stolen or lost, someone else can’t tap with it and buy a car. Ours is set to $100. Even then, if we report the card lost or stolen that $100 is covered by the bank.

I only ever even found out "tap" existed by accident. I accidentally "tapped" at a drive-thru not long ago and could not understand why they were giving me the coffee without having to pay...(yes, I'm dumb like that :o ).

It’s not dumb, it’s just not knowing the technology. My mom is only on her second bank card that she’s ever had. The only reason she gave up her first one was because it was literally cracking in half. Her card doesn’t have a tap or chip or anything.

I remember the day they called and said I had 48 hours to come in and get a chip card or my debit days were over. :sad1: Life-altering. And as far as technology goes, did I ever tell you about the time I turned my push-button car off while driving at highway speed instead of hanging up a call on my bluetooth, which is what I was trying to do? :scared1: True story.

OMG! What happened?

On chip readers. I’ve never had an issue using them other than the initial learning faze. Most of them (all of my cards are capable of this) can be used for “tap and pay” if a system is set up for mobile payments. I usually use my phone for this though rather than having to take out my wallet and card. Typically debit cards are linked to your checking but you can link them to your savings. The only distinction between charge or debit is a signature vs a PIN number. It’s not really a charge, it comes out of your checking account like a debit would.

On Opiates/Narcotics. Well, there’s a fine line. I am not sure all doctors do know best. There is a practice here (three clinics) where they will write you a prescription for just about damn near anything. As long as your insurance will pay it, they’ll write it. Same with pain management clinics. They’ll prescribe on top of what your doctor does. I have had minor procedures and will specifically ask for 800s vs narcotics and they will give me a script for both, “just in case.” It’s a very slippery slope IMO and I’ve seen the effects on too many people close to me still taking meds for ailments that are long over.

Boarding an airplane without taking off your shoes. I hate this rule :)
It’s a simple one... get TSA pre ck and you ll enjoy .. no shoe or sweater take off, no long lines and Easier airport experiences! Love it!

abreva (cold sore meds) during the hours the pharmacy is closed.

yup-apparently it's a popular otc to shoplift so many places only have it behind the pharmacy counter so you're s.o.l. if you start to get a cold sore outside the hours the pharmacy is open.

If you get cold sores, Valtrex is a MIRACLE drug that literally clears it up within 2 days. Definitely ask your doctor for this drug (along with a couple refills so that you have it on hand).

For $85, isn't it?

Used to be that we didn't have to strip down to get on a plane.

But then some people ruined it, and that is why we can't have nice things.

Yes, but the point of the thread is what we have lost over the years.

We've lost the ability to stay fully dressed at the airport, without having to pay money for the option.
We've lost the ability to have our doctor give us the medication they think we should have.
We've lost the ability to have medication bottles that open easily, without having to ask for them.
We've lost the ability to swim at Disney, after a late night at the park
We've lost the ability to buy gift cards, using gift cards. (At Target.)

None of these things makes me Unhappy or Pessimistic. They just "are."
