Why the game?

I'm really curious as to why some people will pop up on threads and take the least popular stance and run it to the ground. They say the most obnoxious, insulting, ridiculous stuff and then, when someone calls them on it, they get "points".

Now, does the obnox get points to for being inflammatory and purposely trying to start trouble? or does just the other person get points? does the obnox have to go whine to the PTB or do the mods decide on their own? or either/or?

Just trying to get more of the lay of the land here. I don't want points, but by golly sometimes people are just too rude.

Welcome to internet posting boards! The anonimity of internet postings let people explore a side of them that I tend to believe you would not see in real life. People are not nearly as contiversial in every day life. If they are then they are someone you would not assocoate with much so you would not see or hear their views. However here people with all sorts of differing views come together because of one commonality, that being a love of all things Disney. I do truely believe though that some people love to stir the pot every no and then just to see peoples reaction. We live in America which is great simply because you can say those things without fear of retribution or censorship (excluding of course the fact that there are "rules" on the board that we do have to live within). I try for the most part to be logical in my responses and stay away from name calling. Facts and common sense can usually get a point across very well without denigrating to name calling. But alas others feel the only way to say your stupid is by coming out and flat saying "your stupid" which is a no no.

Others, will defeat you by way of the grammar police. As you are banging on the keys to get your point across as fast as possible you spell incorrectly, or make grammatical mistakes and rather than refute your point they hint that you might be less than authoritative on a subject becuase obviously you are uneducated because you can't write a coherint sentence.

Others will try philosophy 101 which is a very obtuse method of talking about something without really talking about something. In philosophy you can only accept something that is actually proven through personal observation which means that you through out all arguments based on antidotal information and only accept certain facts.

Then there are those who always take the moral high ground and look down their noses at the rest of us that are willing to take shortcuts along the way.

Finally there are those that after a long discussion on a subject which at some point a factual well presented authoritative arguement is made simply dismiss the poster by saying something along the lines of well, what kind of person or authority can you be if your posting on a weekday during business hours. You must be a slacker cause you are not giving your employer a full days work.

Thus is the world of internet posting. We have all seen the tacticks used above and in many cases may have used them ourselves. None of us are by any means guiltless, but obviously we get something out of the process because we keep coming back for more.

Oh sorry there is one other type of poster, one who writes long obtuse responses to seemingly short posts, and wants to ramble on for days about seemingly insignificant details.............

Some posters have already addressed some of the reasons already in this thread.

Ever heard or "trolling?" Some people post controversial stuff just to get a rise out of people (aka trolling).

Also, I find people often playing devil's advocate just to see what people's opinions are on a subject.

One important quality to have when visiting internet message boards is thick skin. Human beings have diverse ideas and opinions. Learn to embrace what others think and try to understand where they are coming from.

yeah, I don't take much personal, but it's just like sometimes people will find ANY excuse to continue to spout something, even if you could prove 10x it's not so. Do people WANT to get other people to get points? That just doesn't sound nice. Why would you care to do that? I get having some fun and don't mind a little mind play so to speak, but I'm not out to cause anyone trouble, kwim? I don't get that.

Also, always try to remember that one cannot "hear" tone in a written comment. I have seen more issues arise from misunderstanding something that is clearly written but has no tone than I have seen of people actually attacking each other.

Here is an example.
FredinFl, I have seen several of your comments over the boards, they are often sarcastic and witty. Nothing wrong with that, until someone comes along who does not hear the sarcasm or the witt and thinks you're attacking them or its personal towards them and more often than not, instead of asking and clarifying they will in turn attack.

The use of smilies is helpful, but they are often ignored or misinterpretted.

Its a message board, take it for what it is and for goodness sakes don't take it personally.

Well....it is a DISCUSSION board......and there sure wouldn't be a lot of discussion going on if everyone agreed on everything, or didn't ask questions.

So while posts like this :

Yeah, the past few days have been quite the hoot on the DIS. I'm remaining point free. Unfortunately, I've also had to shut the internet down quite a few times in order to remain point free.

BTW: excellent name for a B&J flavor! I think the ingredients would need tweeking, though. LOL

None so far, well not on this thread anyway. It's an honest question right? I'm not blaming anyone, it's just curious. I'm trying to NOT get more points,!

There are definitely some folks around here who post simply to stir the pot. Once they've got everyone else in the thread bickering and name calling, they've done what they set out to accomplish.

Personally, here's what I've noticed the last couple of days. If your thoughts on a controversial matter remotely resemble any professed beliefs of the pot-stirrer, some folks can turn a bit ugly toward you. The entire discussion is then tainted and decorum flies out the window. At that point, it's time to leave the discussion.

The folks on the other side of the issue should perhaps be glad that pot-stirrer did not profess to share their view of the situation and make outlandish statements to "support" it. But ya never know, pot stirrer might come back with another ID to continue the argument.
