Why the football shirts??

I'm not sure if I'd agree that England is always unpatriotic. Remember last year during Euro 2004 when almost EVERY car had those flags attached to the windows and the police threatened to ban them? Also loads of houses had England flags up in the windows and England shirts were being worn in the thousands in the city centres. I think football can bring out pride in our nation which is a great thing except when the minority ruin it through violence and hooliganism.

This thread is funny. I've also noticed the football jerseys and wondered about them--they look hot. Honestly, I don't need a football jersey to "spot the Brit". I've played that game while standing in line; DH gets annoyed when I try and get close enough to hear an accent. I'm very peeved when I'm wrong. It's getting harder. It used to be so easy, you know, socks with sandals. Don't see that too much anymore.

The flags on the cars thing really got started after 9/11, and it hasn't abated much. I have t-shirts with flags on them, and wear them without embarrassment; no socks though. I certainly wouldn't find it odd to see Brits sporting the Union Jack. Don't really understand why it seems to bother some Brits.

However, I draw the line at wearing those "family reunion t-shirts". No way, Jose.

BTW I saw the Daily Mail in all of the WDW hotel gifts shops for $1.75 and at the airport. It's sent over the internet and published in Orlando.

My DS2 wears his England football kit with pride and to be honest I think he looks so cute in it. Thing is though he is obsessed with them and would wear them all the time.
I love it when I spot other Derby fans but scowel when I see a Forest fan. This year I will be buying DS a Derby kit as he is becoming quite a fan but DH says he can't wear it ouy of the house - he is a Toon army fan.
Footie shirts make for great conversation which is great when you are stuck in line for an hour.
As for socks with sandals, you can normally spot the American tourist with their socks pulled up halfway up their legs with their 'sneakers' on

oh yes, socks with sandals , now that IS a bad fashion statement, especially when wearing a vest, makes our football shirts look almost cool

Last year my son wore his Palace top in MGM, and as we were out there for nearly 3 weeks we had no idea of scores etc (and how badly we were languishing around the foot of the table).

Anyway, some guy came up to my son and told him "Good team mate, you beat West Brom 3-0 on Saturday". That made our day!!

Pity West Brom didnt lose a few more games.............

I'm a season ticket holder at Forest (Clare D, I bet you're scowling at me!) and in Florida often saw people in Forest shirts. We once saw a family wearing Forest shirts in Pizza Hut in Orlando on the day that Stuart Pearce moved to Newcastle, which got us chatting to them.

I wear my Forest shirt for the same reason I wear Disney tops - because they're both things I love.

I wear a top with the Crystal Palace crest on it but it's a polo shirt, not a replica playing shirt. I find the fabric gets really sweaty from the replica shirts that and there always seems to be a West Ham/ Millwall/ Charlton Athletic fan in every ride queue waiting to take the out of me!

I don't wear an England football shirt outside of the UK from fear of looking like a typical Brit tourist or, dare I say it, Chav. But a polo shirt with a small logo on it isn't too bad, and it gets conversations going amongst the British tourists waiting for the parades! EAGLES!

I cant really see a problem with wearing the football shirts. In fact as a football fan, it is worthwhile, as the Americans have no grasp as to how important the game is to us brits it is almost impossible to find out a score while on hols. I do find that spotting the odd football shirt (not only in the US but europe too) tends to be a bit of an ice breaker (granted, mostly with the guys) and allows us to find out missing scores from back home.

We all have our odd little things, I do find, slightly amusing, that when the American marching band played the drum roll at the start of the National Anthem, all the Americans stood with caps off and hand on heart, including some American Guy in a wheelchair!
