Why the football shirts??

Whilst im not trying to advertise my nationality, I wear my team top whilst im on holiday to show that im a proud footy fan. Also, you need so many t-shirts while in florida that it can cost a fortune unless you use items from your wardrobe and it just so happens that I have lots of football shirts.

It can also be a fantastic conversation starter, especially as im a Gillingham fan!!

Other than that, i think people are proud of their nationality and wearing a football shirt is an excellent way to show that.

Surely it's the same as Americans walking around in American Football or Baseball shirts of their favorite teams?

Andy

This is all a bit subjective.
I don't see what the problem is - our DS's always wear their Celtic football shirts at some point on holiday - usually in a theme park. Where I live, people wear football shirts all the time - not just to football matches - so this is pretty much the 'norm' for us.

As for the 'tourist' thing - surely everyone should be aware of their own safety regardless of what they are wearing and where they are - WDW, Universal or somewhere away from the usual busy spots.

Given the price of replica shirts I wouldn't have thought people bought them especially for going on holiday but have them as part of their normal wardrobe.

Also if you think about the number of Brits that visit WDW it stands to reason that you are going to see some football shirts being worn on any particular day. It probably only forms a small percentage of the actual number of Brits you do encounter but they stand out as such because you recognise the clothing more readliy.

:teeth:

Walking around Orlando in football boots :rotfl2:

It's a football shirt for crying out loud, it's a completely inoffensive item of clothing.
if the wearer is behaving like a football hooligan then you have right to complain and be embarrassed, until then...............................get a life springs to mind.

It very much depends on which team it is though!!!!

I know that this will probably wind some of you up.. its really not designed to.. but I am always completely amazed by the amount of Brits wandering around in England Football shirts, and sometimes in complete football kit! Many of them look like they have never played football in thier lives!!

What is it with the football shirts? They dont look very cool to wear - they look hot and sweaty to wear (althought I admit they may not be.. who knows!?) - :confused3 :rotfl2:

So many of my US friends who live in Orlando think its hilarious - they are always saying... lets guess what nationality this family are!! (entire family wearing england football shirts... son also wearing, england shorts, socks, football boots etc) :earseek: :rotfl2: :earseek:

I have this terrible urge to shout... "is there a football match nearby?"

Sorry, but I thought one of you clever people could shed some light on the subject, so next time I dont feel embarrassed to be british! :rotfl: :wave2: :rotfl:

(wearing flame retardant suit!) ;)
why do you wear lime green?

Also, just to add the reason for the kids wearing the entire kit is usually because they are sold only as a kit where as the adults sell the shirt, shorts seperately.

Either that or there really is a football match nearby!!

I don't wear a football shirt but I don't critize other people for doing it either. Who says what you wear is better/nicer/more acceptable?

My boys both have England kits and yes, we did take them to Florida mainly because they're easy to wash out and dry so they can be worn m ore than once. And yes, they dry quickly on the body too (so that was good given the ammount of rain we had :umbrella: ) Younger DS had shorts and shirt as his came as a kit, elder had both although big enough for the "separates" because that was fair. Also, he tends towards "boarding" styles which leave very little leg on show and its the only way to get him into remotely short shorts :rotfl: They have the "away" kit as we found from experience a Home kit plus small boys is asking for trouble if they like chocolate :sad2:

DH doesn't have one as he can't bring himself to pay that much for a non-smart garment. l I don't have one because I don't do nylon however hi-tech :rotfl2:

In case you were wondering we left the long socks at home....

I'm sorry, I just don't understand why anyone would feel 'embarrassed' about seeing their own nations flag on a t-shirt? And what is there to be 'dubious' about?

As for seeing other nationalities, maybe its ignorance of other countries football strips, as I saw plenty of German and Dutch shirts when I was on holiday - this isn't something that is confined to the British, people of all nationalities wear their football strips. I also own a Juventus and Barcelona shirt that I wear on holiday.

Football is our national game and its profile has never been higher, hence the number of replica shirts.

I have to agree here. I have seen many German, Italian, Dutch etc football shirts in most of the places I have visited, whether the USA, Canada, Cyprus etc.

I am a life long supporter of Shrewsbury Town (and that can be embarrassing at times...nay, most of the time :rotfl2: ), am aged 47, and I do wear my club's shirt to the theme parks (luckily, my stomach isn't too large). MAny people talk to me, from all nationalities; Americans wanting to know more about grass roots "soccer"; Germans trying to identify the team; English trying to identify the team :rotfl2: ; and me having to commiserate with Aldershot fans (if you're from Aldershot you'll know what I mean).

I find the shirts comfortable, as others have said, they dry out quick, they are easy to pack and are very robust.

I've also seen Aussies wearing their Aussie rules football shirts, Kiwis in their All Black rugby shirts etc.

This thread has probably now caused the "You don't see many Ford Anglias these days do you?" syndrome.

Every where you look now you'll see people wearing sports shirts :magnify:

As my earlier posts say too - I dont necessarily wear my Liverpool shirt to get noticed, however, the number of times people talk to you is great, regardless of where they are from.
The shirts are comfortable and ideal for the water rides.
Wear your shirts with pride all.

Right...moving this to the Community Board and a gentle reminder not to forget the board guidelines which can be found Here :)

Thank you Richard for being a challenge! Both myself and DW are mad football fans, and although we rarely wear football shirts ourselves (apart from to games), we actually are that sad that we like to try and identify as many teams' shirts as possible while we're in the parks. So people like you make our day because it gets a bit boring when it's all Man U, Chelsea and England shirts. We had to walk past someone in MGM three times once to try and identify his shirt - turned out to be Stockport County 3rd change kit!

But if I did wear my shirt in the States, good luck to anyone trying to work out who I supported, unless you know your non-league teams!

Whenever we've been in America it's always struck me how proud they are of their country and have thought it's a shame we Brits don't show our patriotism in the same unembarrassed way. Well, maybe we don't have that much to be proud of but wearing your team shirt is a sort of way of showing you're proud to stand up and be counted. (This from the only family member not to be a season ticket holder - I keep telling them "it's only a game" but they won't believe me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) ;)

I wear my Ipswich shirt while on holiday, and feel proud! Believe it or not it makes for a great way of meeting people!!
They are also very comfortable and keeps you cool.

DH has got 20+ various Arsenal shirts collected over the years. He wears them all the time at weekends and alot on holiday. Apart from all the points already made about them ie dry quickly etc, they come out of the tumble drier and don't need to be ironed - which is fine by me!

hi all

just to join in on this topic :) my 2 boys are always wearing their footy kits,i personally get fed up with seeing them wearing them but whatever keeps them happy makes me happy :rotfl: and yes they are so easy to get washed and dried :cheer2:

just to add the first time we went to epcot we were stood in the uk and in one of the windows was a chelsea shirt and lets just say all my 3 boys (that's dh too)were at their happiest on that day  must be a man thing and i as dh would say i don't understand football :confused3
