Why the football shirts??

why do you wear lime green?

I wasnt aware that I did!? :rotfl2:

thank you to those of you who answered my question and did not jump down my throat!! You wear them because despite the fact they look like the hottest garment on the planet.. apparently they are lovely and cool to wear due to some amazingly high technological advancement! They dry out fast if you get sprayed by some pesky kid on the bridge at the Kali River Rapids, and dont need ironing.

Apparently they also are a good way to spark a conversation with fellow brits. I am almost scared to say that I cant stand football, so would avoid anyone in a football shirt like the plague (which is just as well, as Im sure after this post many of you would like to avoid me too!)

Yes, honestly Ive seen football boots.. the whole caboodle!!

Yes, I agree the Americans do wear football shirts too.. I suppose what suprises me is that as a nation we appear to be so unpatriotic (for goodness sake, we celebrate st patricks day in the pub, and not st georges day! :confused3 ) and yet half of the brits on holiday seem to want to advertise the fact they are brititsh.

Mind you - half the brits I see, advertise just as well that they are british, by the fact they spend their time walking around Disney arguing, shouting and swearing at eachother.. :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl2: :rotfl: :rotfl:

We have only been to WDW once but did not experience any of the above behaviour during our two weeks there. Perhaps we were just very fortunate. I hope not, it seems almost obscene to behave like that on Disney property! (Yes, I know, behaviour like that should not be acceptable anywhere:teeth: )

You were lucky.. I think we have experienced it to a greater or lesser degree on every one of our 15x 2 week trips to Disney!

personally I find it particularly bad at the Florida Mall! :earseek: (I know thats not disney!)

PS... Ware Bears... our birthdays are next to eachother! Mine is 29th!

Happy Birthday for yesterday!

We must have been really lucky too. I can't remember any bad behaviour on any of our 7 trips. Don't let people who "jump down your throat" bother you SammieG - football seems to do that to people but it isn't attractive!!!

Well to be honest I do not see how you can say that brits advertise by swearing, arguing at each other, coz I find that there are far more rude people out there i.e brazilians, mexicans always jump the queue, push into you etc..... I find this is worse and unfortunately I admit to sterotyping brazillians and mexicans. As soon as I see them my reaction is oh here we go again. I have met so many pleasent brits in Florida and never have I come across a arrogant brit only a foreign one. :sad2:

I have also found when Americans know your british I always get thanks for being our friends, ask how the queen is doing, and they sound generally interested. I also find that americans know our football kits like Man U, Arsenal etc... as they are big premier clubs. Many other nations wear football kits from thier own leagues, but the American people may not recognise it.

Sorry but I do feel us brits are unfortunately sterotyped for no reason. I am very proud to be british and my husband can wear his England football kit as often as he likes as he looks SEXY!!! lol :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

P.S It must really hurt walking around a park in studded boots.

:cheer2: Ok football shirts and the English. Things to bear in mind

People who wear football shirts on holiday will probably wear them as much at home.

They are made out of mateial which will make you keep cool and they dry quick.

ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL is the most popular sport in Britain, just like baseball and American football is in the states.

In my numerous trips i have seen as many american football shirts as i have football shirts and not all the football shirts are of english clubs, i have seen bacelona, ac milan etc in wdw plenty of times

WDW is the most popular tourist destination for brits after spain - hence there will be more uk shirts than say german.

association football is at the moment experiencing a popularity peak - you would have been less likely to see football shirts in the dreadful 80s.

Many premiership clubs have international fan bases - therefore a japanease person could be wearing a manchester united shirt or an new zealander wearing a Chelsea shirt. don't assume all the shirts are wore by brits.

and just for the sake of it a trivial fact

You can take a degree in football and society at some uk uni's like UCLAn, preston and liverpool. (i'm doing a couple of modules in the subject as part of my history degree, and live with someone who is doing the above degree with English.)

Thank you:sunny:

Belated birthday wishes for the 29th!:bday:

When we first started to go to Orlando the safety guidelines were to blend in and try not to look like a tourist. Footie shirts obviously make you stand out as a tourist. At the time too, Americans could spot the British because a lot would wear shell suits.

We do try to blend in, the kids just take normal teeshirts. Only DS2 is into footie shirts in any case.

I think the wearing of footie shirts is just something this country like to do and it is entirely up to the individuals if they choose to wear them.

Personally I don't mind seeing kids wearing them or adults wearing them whilst doing sports or whilst watching their teams. However, the sight of a grown man in a footie shirt with a massive beer gut is really off putting. It just looks so unhealthy because they just look like they spend all their time drinking in pubs and not taking any exercise.

The weirdest Bitr-spot I saw was the "All day British breakfast" place on I-drive, with the proud boast "UK Paper sold here". Why would you want to pay $3.99 for a rasher of bacon, a sausage and an egg when you can go to IHOP or Perkins?

I always find americans are very interested to find out you are British -usually they have a relative who lives a mere 200 miles from you and are sure you must know them :rotfl2:

We also found certain types (generally war vets with buzz cuts) wanted to know
1) what we thought about I-rack ;) and Tony Blur :rolleyes1
2) Whether their son/daughter/cousin twice removed should take an umbrella to Yurrup in August

OK that actually only happened once  but we were often asked what the weather was like at the moment or for the particular month they planned coming :sunny: :umbrella: .

:rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2:

This is what makes holidays/travelling and life in general so interesting!!!

It would be soooo boring if we were all the same!!! :goodvibes

What I want to know is does this new high tech. material that football shirts are made from now still give you joggers nipple?

I know :rotfl2: I was asked by a guy in New york if I knew anybody by the name of Greene (with an 'e') in Burming - ham ;)

I also try to fit in as much as possible, that's the main reason I put on 15 stone and named my kids Cletus and Shantelle.

I am sure you will be disheartened to here that there were more arrests at Glastonbury 2004 than there were at Euro 2004 and World Cup 2002 combined. which were attended by approximately 10 times the amount of people. :cheer2:

Tinkerbelluk, are you doing your degree at UCLAN? Both my brother and I graduated from there several years ago. I am now back there doing another course.

thanks everyone! I have learned LOADS about football shirts.. and am looking forward seeing some in August!! (where I will know they are lovely and cool to wear.. hey.. maybe I should get one myself!)

Sammie, if you are going to buy one make sure it's red with a Liver Bird on it.

When are you going in August? We are off the 22nd.

I was in Istanbul via Malaga last week, only just recovering now. :cool1:

Tim, the new shirts are really good, I have the new British Lions rugby shirt which is the same sort of material and is really good, especially in the hot weather (I am not a football fan).

The time I was most emabarressed to be British was in October 2001 (a month after 9/11), my friends and I were at Seaworld, just before the park opened, they raised the US flag and played the National Anthem. We stood still and quiet, only here to here British voices swearing and shouting (wearing Liverpool and Celtic shirts), in my opinion showing enormous disrespect.

On the subject of clothing on each trip I have been on, I have seen a family (nearly always american) where exactly the same outfit, matching hats, t-shirts, shorts, socks, trainers and backpacks. I apologise to anyone that does this, but I do find this funny.
