I have just taken the step of up from my point and shoot (Canon Powershot Pro S1 IS) to a DSLR (Digital Rebel XTI) after much reading and driving camera/electronics store employees crazy by testing different bodies, lenses and such. I read this board every day and find that the posters here who share their knowledge and exeperince helped me to be a better informed consumer than I might have otherwise been :thumbsup2 .

I also want to thank all those who recommended the "nifty fifty" which I picked up with my kit. All I can say is WOW! One of my reasons for upgrading was to have a better system for low light and mixed light sources shots both with and without flash, and this lens does fit the bill nicely. So once again, for all you very valuable advice :thanks:

Finally, I have to say, if it weren't for the pictures and posters on this board, I probably would not have become as interested in photography as I now am. I certainly never would have given a second thought to exposures, white balance, apeture values and the rule of 16 (still working on all of these  ), and how I could make my pictures better. So while my wallet is not so happy, I still think that :disrocks:

Congradulations on the new purchase (even if you did decide to go with the :darth: Evil Empire :darth: (canon that is) :teeth:

Do yourself (actually your wallet) a favor. Don't come back to this board!!! Once your bitten by the dSLR bug there are never enough lenses, flashes and accessories you can buy for yourself. We're real good at convincing others to buy more stuff! Heck, my recently ordered battery grip for my D50 just arrived today. I'm always looking for more stuff. I guess I should take my own advise. I'm always left wanting MORE!!

Anyway, be sure to post pictures. Happy learning and happy shooting!!

I'm going to pretend I didn't just read that.....:rotfl2:
I've lurked here quite often, oohing and aaahing over the great photos. At the end of last week, I decided to buy a Nikon D50. It should be arriving this afternoon. I also picked up another lens from eBay.

Don't know if I'll even know how to use it, but eventually I'll figure it out. As long as I can take a basic shot before we head out on our cruise, I'll be OK. ;)

I like the fact that there are so any people that will share their experiences and knowledge. I also appreciate that it does not seem that everyone is hung up on buying what they have. If it is a good product people are still happy that we have joined, or will be joining, the DSLR family. Thanks for all the great advise over the past few months.:thumbsup2

Don't you just LOVE those?? I've got the one for the D200 have have really enjoyed it. Two batteries, they are used one at a time. So you can (theoretically) never run out again. The vertical grip with shutter, aperture and shutter release control is really nice!!
