I have been lurking on this site for a couple of years now and I just don't understand the reason for "bashing" the dining plan. It is not forced on anyone...either way you have to pay for your food. Am I missing something?? We have used it when it was free and we have paid for it oop. I think it is convenient either way. We were offered the bounce back for this September and upgraded to delux...we are excited. Honestly, I think they are done offering free dining due to all the "sharing". This is just my oppinion. I think this site is very helpful but at the same time, for all the "disney lovers", you sure do complain alot, LOL!!

I guess this comes across pretty mean...that was not my intention. I am just confused as to why so many people complain about having to leave tips, not being able to share, and getting bad service...we have always had great servers.

Your're right!-I have read a lot of complaining too. April will be our first time using the DDP. Either way I'm paying for it. So what if I save a few $$$, the money saved will just be spent somewhere else. I just like the idea of not having to carry money.:thumbsup2

Not mean, just honest and accurate. Nothing wrong with stating your opinion.

I've only used the plan once during Free Dining 2007; we really enjoyed it and like you have upgraded to Deluxe for our 2008 Bounceback trip.

Anytime there are price increases, loss of services and loss of quailty.. people are unhappy. Some people...like me...just don't like a lot of change. Especially, if it's eliminating or drastically changing something I like. This is true whether it is Disney dining or health care. This is just a place people can come to vent. Hopefully, we can learn a thing or two by listening to the opinions of others.

THANK YOU!

I totally respect the oppinions of others. I just feel that sometimes people are a little "harsh" on the whole "change". Things change and that's life...I just choose not to let the focus of my disney trip(s) center around the dining plan. I really do appreciate all the input I find on this site...I had just never put disney in the same category as health insurance before...makes me more depressed, LOL!!

You will soon learn how serious we are about our Disney!:lmao:

Right on!

:worship:

Not to mention, any change that makes it harder to convince the other half that its still worth taking all those vacations to Disney is going to get under peoples skin!

Things change and that's life...
:thumbsup2

This should be the second ethic folks learn, right after The Golden Rule. (Or maybe the corollary [with deference to the Rolling Stones]: You can't always get what you want.)

Indeed -- it is amazing what you get when you say please. :)

I think that when people pay hard earned $$ for their meals before getting to WDW, they want what they've been sold...good food, atmosphere and service. The reality for some folks is far different.
We do not use the plan, and I have really found the service and food to be good, with some expected exceptions. I think the restaurants do not like the plan, though I am not sure what difference it makes to them. I just imagine it is like all of the all-inclusive places we have been to. There is no incentive for great service. Never terrible, but if you catch someone on a bad day, it could ruin your meal.
I was disappointed at the changes in the kids meal choices since the plan has taken hold. It is the same 5 choices everywhere. But without the plan I could choose what I wanted for them off the menu. Maybe the tips were a big problem???

I would use the plan if it was a "Free dining" option, but would probably still spend some extra on things/places off the list. JMHO Which ever way you dine, you will have a great and not so great meal at Disney. But it IS Disney, have fun!!!!

I am sort of hoping the changes to the dining plan will offset the decline in quality of the food...but not holding my breath.

DDP is still in its infancy. in its first year, WDW learned the hard way that if there is a way to get around the rules, it will be done (i.e., using kids' credits for adults, "phantom guests" during free dining, using credits for other ppl, etc).
so they started closing some loopholes.
then they reoffered the plan, but actually enforced the restrictions, rather than relying upon ppl's integrity :thumbsup2 , causing a huge outcry, similar to the one you see now ("i'll never use DDP again", "other people don't realize they're getting ripped off", etc).
what WDW didn't fully consider was the fact that plan could still easily be "maximized", by using it only at the most 1TS expensive restaurants, eating only the most expensive items. also, a lot of food was simply being wasted (we heard/saw quite a few guests comment that it was "too much food", but who continued to order everything simply b/c it was included. :guilty: ). the plan was simply being used as offered, so no one was "cheating". there were simply more guests who were knowlegable about the plan's offerings, & who wanted to use it to its fullest (again, nothing wrong with that), than there were guests who didn't.

IMHO, the DDP wasn't thought out well enough initially. the plan was originally devised assuming that there would be a greater amount of unused credits, & more lower to mid-priced dining (buffets, lunches), so it would average out. the 2008 shows that they are simply rethinking how to continue filling the restaurants while maintaining some sort of profit margin (mostly using the requirements of non-discounted rooms, & passes to add to the "bottom line", & using DDP as the loss leader).

much of the backlash you're seeeing now is simply b/c the old DDP was a incredible deal for almost all guests, rather than the more "sensible" deal it is now (btw, DH said he felt like he was "stealing" when we used the old plans, & we didn't even "maximize" it  lol).
the 2008 DDP isn't right for everyone (just as the same pass or same resort would be), but it is still beneficial for some, without the need for "maximizing". for others, the DDE would be a much better choice, & then there are some for whom eating off-site is the "perfect fit".
btw, i didn't think you were being mean :) . there really are only a few "bashers" (tho they tend to be more vocal;) ); the majority here are content with their decision to use the DDP or not, & don't feel the need to convince anyone that their decision is the best for everyone...
it's just the way of the web :confused3 lol

& welcome to the DIS!! :wave2:

Bravo, LSchrow - well said, well explained, and I totally agree!

Full report to follow on upcoming trip 1/26-2/3.....

melomouse - also tagless on LI!!!

I'd have to agree wholeheartedly with LSchrow...the original DDP was an unbelievable deal for those who used it. It was a ton of food that would have cost MUCH more had it been paid for oop...people were able to order whatever they wanted and not worry about the price. Most people delighted in finding the most expensive thing on the menu. Something they may have not done otherwise. This doesn't happen in life very often. It feels good to not worry about prices...even if it's just for a meal. I know that every time I sat down to eat, it felt magical to get whatever I WANTED!!!:cool1:

I think the original DDP was one of those "too good to be true" situations. It lasted a while, it was fun...but as usually happens...people took advantage of every loophole to the nth degree. So now it's over. The belt has been tightened...loopholes closed. Bam.

Oh well.

It's still a pretty good deal!

Anyhow...Disney is still Disney. I'll always love it!!!
