Why oh why are the Princess Dresses Polyester?

Obvious answer is because it's cheap to make them with polyester.

But goodness, they must be hot and uncomfortable for those little girls to wear.

There are many comfortable, breathable fabrics that could be used and the dresses would still be beautiful. Someone should get on that... they could make a dime :thumbsup2

Some people do use other fabrics. Check Etsy/Ebay. I make all my daughters dresses in cotton.

The "other" fabrics (the ones they should be using) aren't always easily handled. If the companies who are hired to make the dresses use the proper material, they'd have to train their employees to be tailors/seamstresses. That costs too much. :(

Have you asked anyone of the Disboutiquers??? They may be able to help you out!

I have two boys, so it doesn't effect me directly. It's just an observation I've made while at Disney World.

I have two little nieces, 6 and 3, and for souvenirs from our 2008 trip I bought them princess nightgowns at a gift shop in MK. They were half the price of those poufy real dresses, but still gorgeous! They were still made out of polyester, though.

I do dress my boys only in cotton. I can't stand synthetic fabrics.

Every day we're at Disney World, I find myself thinking "I am SO glad we had boys!" Girls are wonderful as well, obviously, but chances are a daughter would want a trip to BBB, and of course I would oblige.

I'll have to go check out what people have on Etsy!

As other posters said there are many of us on that trend already :thumbsup2
Here is a sample of a Snow White Cotton Sundress that I made for my dd7 to wear on our last trip:

Krista that is adorable, and so appropriate for the weather. I am going to have my MIL teach me the basics of sewing this summer. One question where do you buy the fabrics, just at joannes and try to get corrisponding colors to disney characters or does Disney sell fabric as well?

When I make princess dresses, I make them out of sateen flat bedsheets. Lovely fabric, and much cooler. This is just about the only cotton fabric that is going to look "fancy" enough for a Princess dress, though. If you really want a breathable but very formal fabric, the only choice is silk, which is normally expensive and tends not to hold up too well being worn by toddlers.

Polyester is easy for mass production, because it is thin and somewhat slippery. It is easy to cut with automated machinery and weighs very little; and it does not cost nearly as much to ship as a cotton dress would.

I'm making my DD 3 dresses for Disney. Aurora and Belle are almost done, working on Snow White. I'll post in the Disboutiquers forum and maybe here soon!
I started Aurora and Snow White with pretty solid tees from Kmart. All cotton with flowers on the neckline. Belle started with a cheap yellow cotton tank-top. Aurora has a layered skirt of pink floral calico and a pink glittery cotton. Belle has the layered pick-up skirt of yellow cotton eyelet and Snow White also has the same eyelet with a white eyelet underskirt. Also an eyelet collar is in the works. I looked at seersucker since it tends to be cool and easy to care for but didn't like anything there. All my fabric came from JoAnn's since they have decent prices.
I picked tee shirts since they are cotton, soft, and stretchy.

I buy my fabric from Joann, simply because that is the only place in the area to buy fabric. I try to buy fabrics that mimic the coloring of the characters.

This is gorgeous! I bet it was really comfy, too. I especially love the rosettes on the shoulder straps. Great job :thumbsup2

Thanks so much! My daughter said she liked that it was cool and lightweight. We got so many comments on what a great idea the cotton dress was. The straps aren't rosettes, I sewed red and blue strips of fabric together to make a ruffled strap to mimic the red and blue puffed sleeves of SW's dress.
