Why Not Now? Reaching weight loss and fitness goals in 2016--All Welcome!

I haven't thought a lot about rewards. Right now, my focus is to fit into the clothes I have in smaller sizes (things I really like). One other difference is that I am choosing foods that support my weight loss efforts, regardless of price. I like the organic sliced apples from Trader Joes-I buy a bag or two a week. Since I'm not a fan of food prep or cooking, I also buy a lot of ready to prepare foods. It helps me to have a portion size and then the points ready to go by scanning. Their chicken piccata is great but pricey. So not exactly a reward but spending the money to support my weight loss in the moment.

My focus is shopping from my closet too. :) After that I'll need new or new to me stuff. But I have quite a few decent clothes when I lose another size and half or so as far as jeans. Which I will wear even in 110+ at times. I got better or just didn't care anymore and started wearing athletic shorts a lot even for my job because its pretty casual dress. I wish I could splurge $5 a pound but with my budget just would not work. But maybe could do $20 or so per mini goal which are about 25 lbs a piece. So closer to $1 a lb.

My 30 lb reward is an MLB Dooney & Bourke purse that I've been drooling over for months! Of course I've been on my new eating plan for 4 months and have 4 lbs to go but I am stinking excited about it!

Not a purse gal, refuse to spend more than 30 on one here, but enjoy!! I know you'll get there SOON!

I hear you...saving for a Disney Run Trip is probably the best reward...although I would do it regardless of losing the weight...:rotfl2:

Yes Disney trip of any sort is a great reward.

I found this great new app...well what I have seen of it is pretty great. Its called PACT and you get paid to exercise and to track your food. I am already using FitBit and MyFitnessPal so it connects/links directly to those when I log my mileage or food. You set a goal and each day you meet your goal you earn money, BUT when you do not meet your goal or skip a day you pay money. I think they pay you out of the money other people have lost by not meeting goals. This might be a great savings account for future Disney trips...I am doing a couple of NON PAYING TRIALS before I decide if it is worth it or not. But since I am already doing both tracking anyway...

I'd get into debt if I didn't because I can't afford to just have random amounts coming out even as low as $5-10. Guess the worst that would happen is I'd not have grocery money and would have to do with what I had. I've heard of people doing well with that.

To think about for today...

The weather around here is not so great--we are under a winter storm warning with up to a half an inch of ice predicted. Yuck!
Do you have a plan for exercising if the weather is bad?
http://growingnaturals.com/2013/12/top-5-winter-exercises-for-bad-weather-and-no-exercise-equipment/

DVDS and Youtube videos but currently my exercise has been indoor stuff anyway dancing with Wii games or on my exercise bike.

So last time I lost weight I had a plan to get a Lily Pulitzer dress when I reached my goal--and I never did. This time when I hit 150 (so not quite goal) I am getting western boots. :) I live in the south. I need boots. :) We are going to get a subscription to the country music series this summer so I really want to hit this goal so I can have boots to wear. :)

Very exciting! You are almost there!

I tried dietbet once--and failed. And now can't get them to stop sending me emails. haha. But I think that kind of motivation works great for some folks, and if it works then definitely take advantage of it! Great way to fund your Disney trips. :)

*****
Our forecast is for ice tonight. Uggh. Praying we don't lose power.

Yesterday our little foster puppy was ill and it was a mess. But I managed to stay mostly on plan and I am down ~2 for the week. Looking forward to weighing in and recording it. I am going to start weighing in on Fridays.

Now if I could just stop losing and gaining the same two pounds...

Off to the grocery in a bit--I shop for two to three days at a time. It's going to be a zoo with the storm coming. :) Have a great day!

Boots sound great. :)

My husband finally listened to me this year for Christmas....the man does an amazing job with gifts (but sadly I am just not a jewelry girl)...this year I have hinted about a treadmill and that is exactly what I got from him. I am so thankful for this gift as it has really stepped my game up when the weather is nasty outside I have no excuse! I have though learned why it is called the dreadmill because anything more than 3 miles is not fun. Right now I am not training for any race so I am just focusing on distance and getting cardio/steps in...which means I am able to break up sessions into a morning 2 mile, lunch 2 mile , and afternoon 2 mile. I get outside as much as possible to do my sessions, but the treadmill is a great back up!

Yay!! I bought myself one in my early 20s. I'm not a jewelry girl either. I mean I like it but I'm allergic to almost anything silver. LOL Even stuff like sterling silver and stainless steel its sad.

I work with several other very fitness minded people who have watched me journey into running and fitness and are themselves very active. During breaks we will walk so even on the days I don't make it to the gym I still will have other 30 minutes of fitness tracked. it's over a mile for a lap around the inside of the building so it's a good thing! Also really helps with the steps goal!

Thank you! I'm so excited. The weight loss seems to be crawling to get there! It'll be worth it though!

I think I'm just the opposite! I don't mind the treadmill AFTER the first mile or so but after that I'm fine. It's like that for me on a run too so I guess maybe I'm just weird.

Good luck at the grocery store!! We are having similar forecasts and it's CRAZY! One benefit with the bad weather is if you don't buy stuff off plan you won't have, can't go get it and can't eat it:)

*I am going to talk about food. Stop reading if you are hungry!*

I tried my air fryer last night for chicken drumsticks and they were so good! Crispy on the outside and moist and tender on the inside. Perfect "fried" chicken and it took less than 30 minutes! I wasn't sure how the air fryer would work but so far everything out of it has been wonderful!! Also, Green Giant now sells chopped cauliflower in a bag! Fried in butter it is so stinking good! It tastes like a TREAT! I think this is a key for me. Finding things I can eat that don't taste like I'm giving up all the things I love!

HMMM 8-)That air fryer sounds interesting. I fail at frying chicken and maybe I could get my daughter to eat some from the protein if I could fry it better.

I think I'll make these this weekend. Thanks!
I grew up in western PA so I am used to this weather. I'm not a fan of winter, but I love our fall. It's perfect cooler weather (summers here are HUMID) and beautiful colors on the trees. It was like a heat wave yesterday...temps were in the 20s!!

We are actually getting NONE of this big storm. Finally we are spared! I know they are expecting some snow by Pittsburgh, but I'm further north. We get the lake effect snow off of Lake Erie, so this storm is out of our area. Thank you Mother Nature!

Side note: It takes a lot to get a school delay or cancellation here. We rarely cancel school. It needs to be about -10 wind chill or 6"+ of snow to even consider a 2-hour delay. Cancellations are about -20 wind chills, 12"+ of snow overnight, or significant ice build up. We laugh when the south gets a dusting of snow and everything shuts down :rotfl:

I usually treat myself to something only for me. Clothes, massage, a trip shopping with my sister or friends. This time around, I am going to treat myself on vacation this summer. We haven't made definite plans yet (waiting for DH to get time approved), but if we do a cruise, I will book a massage or a really good excursion. If we do a week at the beach, I will probably find a cool activity to do (dolphin cruise or parasailing).

Although, I love the new music idea, so maybe at the end of each month I will treat myself to some new running songs.

Love this!

Thanks for sharing. I may check it out. I've neve done Diet Bet, but maybe this would be good for me.

If I cannot make it to the gym, I will do the elliptical at home or a DVD workout. Sometimes when it's too cold or we got too much snow to want to drive, I'll take the dog for a walk or take her out back and run around with her. She's a silly Australian cattle dog who has a ridiculous amount of energy, so she loves playing in the snow. Shoveling is also a good workout!

Yikes! Stay safe!
Hope the puppy is feeling better.
Nice job on the loss! Kick those 2 pounds for good!

Sounds yummy!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Okay, I am trying to wrap up all my paperwork that is due next week, so I have been working steady at home the last couple days. And...just got the word that I have a new student who qualified for support and the IEP is Friday. Sigh. I feel like I catch up, then I'm 5 steps back. Too. Much. Paperwork.
The good news is that I am still on plan! Normally, I would stress eat chocolate, chips, and donuts. But, I ate a couple Hershey Kisses and called it a day. I also noticed that I am not buying junk food (except a few cookies for the kids) so I am reaching for veggies or fruit for snacks. Even DSs are grabbing more fruit and yogurt. Although, DS12 is "starving" all day long, so he eats a lot of carbs in the mornings when he has his 2 or 3 breakfasts. He has grown over 6 inches in the last year so I guess he's hungry lol. He's almost as tall as me now (or may even be as tall) and I'm 5'5". He eats me out of house and home. I don't know what I'll do when DS10 hits that stage. I'll have to take out a loan to buy food for them! BUt, enough about food :)
I'm off to do some laundry (yay lol) and finish up my grades. Stay safe if you're in the middle of this mess on the east coast.
Jill
My 12 year old is 5'6" so I believe it. She's two inches shorter than me. I dunno when she will stop growing. o_O
To think about for today...
This is a big issue for me. And I wish it wasn't.
Do you 'let yourself go' when you are unhappy with your weight (ex: hair in a ponytail, no makeup, slouchy clothing)? What do you think is the reason for this shift in self care and how can you combat it?
well at my lowest and my highest I did the same kind of care. Ponytails a lot of time, no make up. I'm sure it would be no different at my healthy ideal weight. Clothing does get a bit better the lower I weigh because when I gain I refuse to buy new clothing and when I do have no choice I go for cheap stuff.
Weigh in--
I will take weigh ins any time this weekend.
You have three choices:
1. Post current weight and I will do the calculations.
2. Post amount lost since the last time I recorded it. PLEASE REFER TO CHART IN POST TWO. Since I was mia for a few days, please make sure your numbers are correct in the chart. :)
3. Post total lost for the month.
Just make sure you tell me what you are reporting. :)
Let me know if you have questions. I hope everyone is happy with their scale!
I'll add it Sunday when I weigh in.
This is totally me. I don't wear makeup to begin with unless it is a special get together. I find it such a pain in the butt and I always end up rubbing my eyes :) Ponytail is me most days. With three kids and long curly hair my hair is up by noon. My clothing goes because nothing fits and I am trying to just cover my body up so I go for my biggest comfy clothes I have. I can't wait to fit back into some of my other clothes again.
I lost another 3.6lbs this week so I am way ahead of my goal which is awesome! 13lbs/10lb goal :)
I'm with you I don't like to have makeup on it feels gritty and my skin does not like it. I'm the same with fingernail polish. I can handle my toes painted though oddly enough. Woohoo on 3.6 lbs down. Way to go!
@Rose&Mike Weigh in day!
148.8, so 6.2 lbs down for the month. Thanks!
Yay nice loss.
Sadly, I'm also not one who really works hard on my appearance, regardless of my weight. I've got thin, but curly, hair. If you try to control it with overstyling, you end up with a frizzy mess. So, I shower, add leave in conditioner, and let it air dry into it's curls, fluff and go. lol. I also don't wear makeup much because it's irritating to my eyes and skin. So, special occasions only and wash it off asap.
I wouldn't say my weight determines my style, but my style makes adding weight deceptively easy. :worried: I tend to be less concerned about my weight UNTIL I really need to get dolled up (for a wedding or interview or whatnot).
Scrubs are pretty much pajamas so I'm frumpy, but comfortable, even at work.
At home, I tend to wear capris and t-shirts in the summer, yoga pants and sweatshirts in the winter. With clothes like that, it's easy to carry excess weight without paying much attention.
BUT, when I try to find something to wear for a nice dinner out or an interview, the damage I've done with my weight becomes much more apparent.
Fitted tops, dress pants and skirts are not nearly as forgiving. :sad2:
Similar here too. My hair is thick wavy to curly its more curly when wet and for a day after if I don't comb but the thickness gets to me and I tend to keep it in ponytail even when I had it cut shorter and thinned out more. So no point trying a "style" and shorter cut because I did the same thing. lol My skin hates make up.
Guess I'm caught up for a while. I skipped another day on my lifting routine because my bum and quads were feeling the squats a bit longer. It's due for me to get in tonight still I suppose. I might or it will be done in morning. I will hop on the exercise bike through as much of one of my nightly MASH episodes. :rolleyes1 I was tired today and I only worked an hour and a half. Picked up my "nephew" and its been a lazy afternoon and evening. Tomorrow I'll get my dd up dancing maybe 10 yo nephew "D" will join in. He's not too coordinated had a lot of developmental delays in addition to ADHD and aspergers but he might enjoy it. I owe him a game of mariokart or something tomorrow. D wanted me to play earlier but I laid down for a bit and he was good. Loud but good. I woke with a slight headache but it faded some. I think its more my teeth than head.
Darci - Great Job!!!! That's so exciting!!! It's nice to be able to enjoy shopping for clothes, lol.
So, today I need to get started adding the exercise component to my plan.
Starting just before 3 12s was good for watching my diet since I'm too busy working and commuting and sleeping to really think about being hungry. On the flip side, it's not very conducive to working out. Luckily, I only get stuck with 3 shifts in a row about once very 4-6 weeks.
So, for the next week, I will have time to work out every day but Friday. I'll call my BFF today and see what days she can fit in for walking, then schedule biking or a video for the other days of the week.
My total loss for this week was 4 pounds. Hopefully I can keep it up next week when I will have a lot more time just hanging around the house with the dogs. I've got a couple projects to work on (painting my son's room and some serious reorganizing in my own room) which will help with the boredom munchies.
Good luck to everyone else this week! We've got this!!! :) :)
I lost a little more. i am down to 220.9, so a total of 4.1 for month. Which I am happy with. I just want to keep going at 1 lb a week.
My chest cold is now in my head-over 2 weeks of feeling lousy. I can't wait to feel better and up to moving a little more. My DH is making me chicken noodle soup today. He is now convinced I really need it. I usually shake off acold in days with tea, airborne,...that type thing. I love homemade soup. We have recipes from his family restaurant and they are yummy!
I wear my hair up every day, for years. I have baby fine hair and in the humidity it just goes flat here, so up it goes. I wear under eye concealer every day and some lip stain no matter what. I cant stand to see the very dark circles, even in the mirror. It seems there is always somebody knocking on my door so I do that first thing even if I am still in my nightgown.
I wear dresses so much of the time, no matter the size I am. I love how easy and cool they are in Florida, so a simple dress and sandals is my everyday look. It has been the same for years even when I had been thinner. I still have a lot of favorites in my closet from smaller sizes. I cant wait to "shop" my closet!
Hi everybody! I have been on vacation since January 3 and have not gotten caught up with all the posts yet. I was at WDW for the marathon weekend (YES! I completed my first Dopey!!!), followed by 5 days on the Disney Dream, followed by 6 more days at WDW.
I knew it was nuts to start a weight loss plan with this trip, but I really think it helped me to focus on portions and choices more than I would have. I didn't want to feel deprived on the trip, but I was happy to share portions with my daughter and split meals when possible/appropriate.
Sadly, I missed my goal of 4 pounds in January, but the good news is that I did not gain one single pound after 3 weeks of wonderful food! I still have some time left in January so maybe I will be able to post a pound or two. So, to Rose&Mike for posting, I have a loss of 0 so far but I have not quit!!
Congrats to all who are losing and congrats to those who haven't lost but are still trying! We can do this and spring will come someday making it easier to get outside and move.
I actually do not do this. I think having to dress up for school everyday helps with that. Although, there are days when it's freezing so I come home and put on warm, fuzzy jammies if I have no where to go.
Just a quickie today!
I wear a 12! And a large! I tried on a couple different pair/ brands to make sure it's not a fluke! I've come from an 18/20 and a 2x!
Super excited!!!
:cool1: That's awesome! Congrats!
I feel like I'm slacking off checking in. I try to make it here at least every other day, but tonight is just a quick check in. Tomorrow is a crazy busy day and DH works, so i don't think I'll even make it to the gym. I'll have to go Tuesday instead. Anyhow, I hope to check in tomorrow sometime.
My weigh in today was 165.1. I need to keep this up! If I could only lose this much a month every month...:rotfl2:
Have a great night!
My laptop died an unfortunate death today. It was way past it's use by date ;) so not the end of the world. But I lost our chart. I have a jpeg copy, so give me a day or so and I will be up and running again.
If someone could post a question to think about for Monday and Tuesday, I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks!!
Oh no!!!!
No clue on a question. I'm not very imaginative.
Era: especially at 6 am. :guilty:
Eta again: That should be ETA, not ERA. Case in point.
I've sucked as of late. I've not counted anything, and I've not weighed. I'll weigh in later this week and post. I'm sure it's probably around my starting weight, but that's ok.
I've started waist training with a corset, and I'm due to get my latex waist trainers in this week sometime. Still doing the oil pulling, and brewing teas. The ones I do sweeten, I sweeten with honey, and that's very minimal. Outside of the butterbeers I drank while being snowed in (and it hurt drinking those in a corset!!), I've not had any carbonated drinks....just water and teas.
I think the weather greatly effects my motivation. Rain/snow, especially snow, just kills me. Between the weather, and having to work longer hours at work are the reasons I've fallen off the wagon. Hopefully I can get back on track this week. I don't know if I'll continue to count points, though. I think just trying to stay away from junk and processed stuff will help more than anything.
Oh, and a small victory for me--I've had 0 potato chips since start of the year. And I love me some potato chips.
I've definitely slacked this weekend. But I knew that I would, it was DS's 8th birthday and we had a good time, eating all kinds of stuff that I shouldn't have. Back on the wagon today. So i'll wait an extra couple days to weigh in :D
I slacked this weekend too. I ate CAKE! My mom made these amazing cakes for 2 of my kids birthdays do we ended up with a Darth Vader cake and a sorting hat cake. How do you resist those? Sigh. I didn't count the pieces I ate. But I'm back on track today! No scale for me!
Happy Birthday to all the kiddos!!!! Sounds like a lot of fun this weekend.
I went over a bit on my points yesterday also. We generally eat Sunday lunch at my IL's house and never know what she's making till we get there, so it's a bit difficult to plan ahead, and even harder to count points. She had homemade chili, and homemade cherry pie. I just had to have a slice of that pie. lol. I did keep it very small (1/12 slice). But I'm sure I went over on my points. I'll just be more careful over the next couple days to make up the difference. I'm really wanting to do things different this time around and find a way to LIVE while losing weight. So, trying not to let one higher calorie day ruin my week or derail my plans.
I don't think this is the type of question you are looking for, but it's something I was thinking about while watching football last night.
We typically have a 'dinner' of appetizers during the super bowl. We have relatives over and I know the husband and kids will still want to do this. And that's going to be a big challenge for me. So, I'm trying to think of some "skinny/lite" options to make for myself to enjoy. My SIL is typically pretty health conscious and would probably enjoy some healthy options as well.
So, does anyone have any LITE TREATS/APPS you use for these types of occasions???
Two things I found on pinterest that I may try are a Skinny BBQ chicken flatbread pizza and Skinny jalapeno poppers. They looked possible, but I'm going to go through the recipes and try to figure out the calorie/fat counts before I make them or if I could make them even lighter.
I figured shrimp with cocktail sauce is another decent option, which we don't have often.
And of course veggies with dip.
Any other ideas???? If you have nutrition information to include with recipes that would be wonderful as well!!!
Good idea! I'm going to struggle through the super bowl too. Maybe some homemade guacamole and organic blue corn chips (but watch portion size). Could use veggies with it too. Hmmm...I'm going to have to go peruse the web over this.
I like Hummus(mixing in some chopped black olives and a little lemon juice) with pita chips we make. Cut like a pizza, then cut each wedge in half, a sprinkle of garlic salt or powder and you can you a dab of oil, butter, spray pam or whatever you like , place under broiler to crisp up.
These are a big hit every time we make them.
Another i do for the kids( but all the adults like as well) are chicken breasts cut into strips and shake and bake extra crispy mix and bake, not the healthiest but probably better than fried wings which are really good but all the frying and margarine in the sauce...
I also have different olives and veggies, cheese cubes, then take sliced turkey and slices of muenster and just do a roll up and put on tray.
Here you go....... but since I don't follow along here every day, I'm sorry if this is a repeat!
Something to think about today.............. cheat meals. How do you handle them? Are you trying to schedule a "splurge" into every week? Or maybe just once a month? Or are you trying to eat a more BALANCED diet so that you can fit splurges in on a more regular basis? Or perhaps you have an initial goal to avoid splurging until you've lost a certain amount of weight?? DO you believe that NOT giving into the occasional treat/splurge will make you crave things more? Or do you think that avoiding those possible trigger foods entirely is the way to go?
I think giving in moderately isn't an issue. I don't keep temptations in my house on purpose. I do my best to not be around temptations but sometimes it's really not a big deal at all. I try to keep the cheats small in portion and really, after eating healthy for awhile, I find I didn't enjoy the treat quite as much as I thought I would. Or, in the case of my cupcake splurge, about 2/3 of the way through, I was done. That NEVER happens with cupcakes! I don't build them into my plan, and I definitely don't want it to happen more than once or so a week. But not something I stress over when it happens.
Right now I am avoiding planning "cheat" meals or "splurge" days. I find it so hard to stay on track by doing that. I am just trying to manage living everyday like I could for the rest of my life. If I know I am going to need extra calories for and event I will plan for it but not make it a regular thing.
The last few days have been mentally tough. I made the mistake of stepping on the scale yesterday after alot of sodium (not calories) this weekend with a little bit of water so of course I was up a bit. I almost derailed after seeing that but am pushing through my usual negative talk and working on have a decent "official" weigh in on Friday. Hockey has also been stressful. I don't understand why some kids and parents have to be such bullies and have zero respect for fellow players and families. I am hoping karma bites them in the a** :) Anyways I think I will have to plan some down time today to clear my head of all the negative thoughts. I also have to drink some more water. I drink water everyday but not the amount I should when trying to lose weight. Winter time makes it so much harder to drink the amount I should.
Forgot to put in my status on weigh in Sunday. I was up 1.6 lbs. I was sad. I'm not quite sure what happened with that but I know I skipped a few days of food tracking and had less dance game time in. I also missed one strength/lifting routine. This week will be back fully on plan so I can make up that amount and hopefully reach 5-6 lbs at least for this month on the 1st's weigh in.
This has always been a difficult balance for me. Splurge meals turn into splurge days turn into untracked weeks.
So, this time, I'm trying to look at this as a "way of life" and something I can live with day in and day out for years...
So, I'm allowing myself some treats, but am trying my hardest to fit them within my daily calorie allowance. If I know there is something I'm going to want that will put me over on my calories (like birthdays or Christmas or whatever) my goal is to be extra cautious in the days/week leading up to the event, and to make sure I go back on plan immediately following.
I also am focusing on keeping the extras smaller in portion size than I would have in the past, so I can feel as "in control" of my "bad days" as I do my good days. Finally, I'm forcing myself to track even my worst days. I want to force myself to be honest about what I'm doing every day, even the days when I'm choosing to eat over my calorie allowance...
Hopefully this will create patterns of eating that will make maintenance more of a lifestyle and help avoid the pitfalls I've fallen into in the past...
Good Evening,
I've been away a couple of days...gone for a work training and then a competition with my daughter. And then back to work!
The good news, down 2.6 yesterday for a total of 9.8 pounds gone since January!!!
I am not good with "splurges"....this tends to trigger me to get out of control. So I am trying very hard to track everything. If I have something, I track it, and I plan to keep doing so, even if I am out of my extra weekly points.
I.
And of course veggies with dip.
Any other ideas???? If you have nutrition information to include with recipes that would be wonderful as well!!!
I made a really good butternut squash hummus....I used the precut butternut squash from Trader Joes, which made it easier. (We do appetizers on January 1, while watching the bowl games, so have already been through this once this year.)
I was also thinking of deviled eggs.....with eggs being 2 points, I am thinking with a little light mayo, mustard and pickle relish, that would be low in points as well. Probably 3 points for 2 pieces.
There is a recipe for a hot spinach artichoke dip on the SkinnyTaste website, which is 2 points per quarter cup.
Forgot to put in my status on weigh in Sunday. I was up 1.6 lbs. I was sad. I'm not quite sure what happened with that but I know I skipped a few days of food tracking and had less dance game time in. I also missed one strength/lifting routine. This week will be back fully on plan so I can make up that amount and hopefully reach 5-6 lbs at least for this month on the 1st's weigh in.
I hope you find these inspirational....."Winners are not people who never fail, but people who never quit" and "Weight loss is like driving. If you ever veer off the road, just make a u-turn and head back in the right direction".
