Why Not Now? Reaching weight loss and fitness goals in 2016--All Welcome!

To think about for today...
We often use food to reward ourselves...cupcakes, pizza parties, etc. Do you have a reward system in place for your weight loss/fitness journey as you meet your goals? What is your plan? If you don't have a reward system in place, do you think it would be useful?

50 Non-Food Rewards for Fitness and Weight Loss

My 30 lb reward is an MLB Dooney & Bourke purse that I've been drooling over for months! Of course I've been on my new eating plan for 4 months and have 4 lbs to go but I am stinking excited about it!

I have no reward system in place this time except my goal is to do some more Disney runs in the future which is kind of a reward in it's own tied into motivation. I once did in the past $5 per pound lost in a jar so I could buy new clothes when I lost weight. I am so busy trying to save for our cruise I have no leftovers :)

I hear you...saving for a Disney Run Trip is probably the best reward...although I would do it regardless of losing the weight...:rotfl2:

I found this great new app...well what I have seen of it is pretty great. Its called PACT and you get paid to exercise and to track your food. I am already using FitBit and MyFitnessPal so it connects/links directly to those when I log my mileage or food. You set a goal and each day you meet your goal you earn money, BUT when you do not meet your goal or skip a day you pay money. I think they pay you out of the money other people have lost by not meeting goals. This might be a great savings account for future Disney trips...I am doing a couple of NON PAYING TRIALS before I decide if it is worth it or not. But since I am already doing both tracking anyway...

50 Non-Food Rewards for Fitness and Weight Loss
So last time I lost weight I had a plan to get a Lily Pulitzer dress when I reached my goal--and I never did. This time when I hit 150 (so not quite goal) I am getting western boots. :) I live in the south. I need boots. :) We are going to get a subscription to the country music series this summer so I really want to hit this goal so I can have boots to wear. :)

<3

I was just thinking in terms of rewards...funny how we are trying to eat right but use a sinful treat as a reward. I need to think a little more on this. Maybe a song to add to my running playlist for every 5 miles. And something a little bigger at every 10 pounds?
I like the idea of adding a song to your playlist. :)

I'm going food shopping today also, hopefully i'll be able to avoid the bad stuff. Need to remember to eat before I go :D But I recently discovered laughing cow cheese also, that stuff is pretty good!
Seriously love the laughing cow cheese this time around! They are all gf and make such a satisfying snack.

Disney runs are a great goal!

I haven't thought a lot about rewards. Right now, my focus is to fit into the clothes I have in smaller sizes (things I really like). One other difference is that I am choosing foods that support my weight loss efforts, regardless of price. I like the organic sliced apples from Trader Joes-I buy a bag or two a week. Since I'm not a fan of food prep or cooking, I also buy a lot of ready to prepare foods. It helps me to have a portion size and then the points ready to go by scanning. Their chicken piccata is great but pricey. So not exactly a reward but spending the money to support my weight loss in the moment.
I am also choosing foods that support goals and trying not to stress about the price. I see it as a form of self care.

My 30 lb reward is an MLB Dooney & Bourke purse that I've been drooling over for months! Of course I've been on my new eating plan for 4 months and have 4 lbs to go but I am stinking excited about it!
Very exciting! You are almost there!

I tried dietbet once--and failed. And now can't get them to stop sending me emails. haha. But I think that kind of motivation works great for some folks, and if it works then definitely take advantage of it! Great way to fund your Disney trips. :)

Our forecast is for ice tonight. Uggh. Praying we don't lose power.

Yesterday our little foster puppy was ill and it was a mess. But I managed to stay mostly on plan and I am down ~2 for the week. Looking forward to weighing in and recording it. I am going to start weighing in on Fridays.

Now if I could just stop losing and gaining the same two pounds...

Off to the grocery in a bit--I shop for two to three days at a time. It's going to be a zoo with the storm coming. :) Have a great day!

Updating this week's weigh in, 183, so 7lbs total so far. Woo-hoo! I've meet my January goal so now I can cheat. Just kidding. I know you lose it quicker in the beginning. It's nice to see the numbers going down for once, I don't want it to stop. I've just been continuing to follow myfitness plan. Have continued to exercise everyday since I started. A couple of days it was only 20 mins or so but better than nothing. I've been going out to eat about once/week and just adding it all up. Occasionally i'm 200 cals over, occasionally 200 cals under, so far it is evening out. I've definitely noticed that I don't want to eat as much anymore, get fuller quicker. DH and I shared a meal last night, which we never do. (He's also following MFP). He came home first last night, ate about 2/3 of his meal and was full so I finished it as mine. Usually he's a clean your plate kind of guy..

Updated. :)

I think I am caught up. :) Please let me know if anyone sees something that needs corrected.

@Rose&Mike Thanks for doing the chart! I just looked at it and seeing my progress in terms of % to go really helps the numbers not feel so monumental. 15% done. 85% to go. I can do that easier than 35 more lbs. lol

To think about for today...

The weather around here is not so great--we are under a winter storm warning with up to a half an inch of ice predicted. Yuck!
Do you have a plan for exercising if the weather is bad?
http://growingnaturals.com/2013/12/top-5-winter-exercises-for-bad-weather-and-no-exercise-equipment/

My husband finally listened to me this year for Christmas....the man does an amazing job with gifts (but sadly I am just not a jewelry girl)...this year I have hinted about a treadmill and that is exactly what I got from him. I am so thankful for this gift as it has really stepped my game up when the weather is nasty outside I have no excuse! I have though learned why it is called the dreadmill because anything more than 3 miles is not fun. Right now I am not training for any race so I am just focusing on distance and getting cardio/steps in...which means I am able to break up sessions into a morning 2 mile, lunch 2 mile , and afternoon 2 mile. I get outside as much as possible to do my sessions, but the treadmill is a great back up!

I work with several other very fitness minded people who have watched me journey into running and fitness and are themselves very active. During breaks we will walk so even on the days I don't make it to the gym I still will have other 30 minutes of fitness tracked. it's over a mile for a lap around the inside of the building so it's a good thing! Also really helps with the steps goal!

That purse is so on your arm SOON...congrats!

Thank you! I'm so excited. The weight loss seems to be crawling to get there! It'll be worth it though!

I think I'm just the opposite! I don't mind the treadmill AFTER the first mile or so but after that I'm fine. It's like that for me on a run too so I guess maybe I'm just weird.

Good luck at the grocery store!! We are having similar forecasts and it's CRAZY! One benefit with the bad weather is if you don't buy stuff off plan you won't have, can't go get it and can't eat it:)

*I am going to talk about food. Stop reading if you are hungry!*

I tried my air fryer last night for chicken drumsticks and they were so good! Crispy on the outside and moist and tender on the inside. Perfect "fried" chicken and it took less than 30 minutes! I wasn't sure how the air fryer would work but so far everything out of it has been wonderful!! Also, Green Giant now sells chopped cauliflower in a bag! Fried in butter it is so stinking good! It tastes like a TREAT! I think this is a key for me. Finding things I can eat that don't taste like I'm giving up all the things I love!

I tried Dietbet too...did not work thanks to this PCOS/Perimenopausal body! But I can control my exercise and my diet...so hoping that PACT will help since I am already doing it anyways through syncing of apps might as well make money at it.

Dietbet and Pact sound interesting. I've never heard of those before.... I don't have a fitbit, but I'll have to think about it if I struggle this time around.

I'm with a few other posters as far as rewards. I try not to make them food related in any way. Usually I use clothes shopping as my reward. Who doesn't want a new outfit to show off a new body, right?? This time, I'm not so sure. I have a closet full of nice clothes that I will be able to wear again if I just drop the pounds (and they are not too old to still be in style. lol.) So, I don't really have a reward planned.

What I'm trying to remind myself of is the two trips I've got coming up in the next year. We're taking a trip to Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg this summer. And next January, I'm going to Disney/Universal with my three sisters. Both trips would be a lot more fun if I drop this extra baggage! So, I'm trying to keep that in my mind through all my trip planning.

Working out during these winter months is doable, just not fun. We've got a few video options for workout (which I haven't used yet this week) and an elliptical in the house. I also have a friend I walk with who is a teacher at the local high school, so we'll walk the halls and stairs there when the roads are bad. I really haven't started working out yet because this was a 3-shift work week and I just don't do well getting workouts in on those days. Tonight's my last shift this week so I'm going to get started on adding exercise tomorrow. I need to come up with some sort of mini-workout for my work days that I won't talk myself out of. lol.

I weighed in today, just to see how things were going and I'm down 3 pounds. I'll take it considering there was no exercise involved. On the average I've stuck to my 1,200 calorie diet in MFP (I was over by less than 100 calories once, but under by about the same on two days.) I'm okay with small adjustments like that, as long as I'm not consistently going over and I'm not going over for junk food (which I didn't this time).

Sounds like everyone is having a pretty good week so far! Keep up the good work!!!

@jillbur You should try it! I didn't put any syrup on it--just some ghee. It was really good. Good luck! I can't believe it's that cold there. How do you stand it? I would hibernate and it wouldn't be pretty. I'm a flip flop year round kind of girl. Lol

I think I'll make these this weekend. Thanks!
I grew up in western PA so I am used to this weather. I'm not a fan of winter, but I love our fall. It's perfect cooler weather (summers here are HUMID) and beautiful colors on the trees. It was like a heat wave yesterday...temps were in the 20s!!

Are you getting snow Jill? Stay warm!
I definitely did better with my lunches when I was at work. :)

*****
I planned breakfast and dinner through Sunday night. :) I included a paleo dessert for Friday night and a paleo appetizer for Saturday night. We are having paleo choc waffles on Saturday with eggs and a fritatta on Sunday for brunch. If we don't eat all the dessert Friday/Saturday I will freeze the leftovers. :)

My plan is to add one day every day to the plan so then I am always about a week ahead.

I know if I have a plan I will be successful!

Have a great Tuesday!

We are actually getting NONE of this big storm. Finally we are spared! I know they are expecting some snow by Pittsburgh, but I'm further north. We get the lake effect snow off of Lake Erie, so this storm is out of our area. Thank you Mother Nature!

Side note: It takes a lot to get a school delay or cancellation here. We rarely cancel school. It needs to be about -10 wind chill or 6"+ of snow to even consider a 2-hour delay. Cancellations are about -20 wind chills, 12"+ of snow overnight, or significant ice build up. We laugh when the south gets a dusting of snow and everything shuts down :rotfl:

50 Non-Food Rewards for Fitness and Weight Loss

I usually treat myself to something only for me. Clothes, massage, a trip shopping with my sister or friends. This time around, I am going to treat myself on vacation this summer. We haven't made definite plans yet (waiting for DH to get time approved), but if we do a cruise, I will book a massage or a really good excursion. If we do a week at the beach, I will probably find a cool activity to do (dolphin cruise or parasailing).

Although, I love the new music idea, so maybe at the end of each month I will treat myself to some new running songs.

If I cannot make it to the gym, I will do the elliptical at home or a DVD workout. Sometimes when it's too cold or we got too much snow to want to drive, I'll take the dog for a walk or take her out back and run around with her. She's a silly Australian cattle dog who has a ridiculous amount of energy, so she loves playing in the snow. Shoveling is also a good workout!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Okay, I am trying to wrap up all my paperwork that is due next week, so I have been working steady at home the last couple days. And...just got the word that I have a new student who qualified for support and the IEP is Friday. Sigh. I feel like I catch up, then I'm 5 steps back. Too. Much. Paperwork.
The good news is that I am still on plan! Normally, I would stress eat chocolate, chips, and donuts. But, I ate a couple Hershey Kisses and called it a day. I also noticed that I am not buying junk food (except a few cookies for the kids) so I am reaching for veggies or fruit for snacks. Even DSs are grabbing more fruit and yogurt. Although, DS12 is "starving" all day long, so he eats a lot of carbs in the mornings when he has his 2 or 3 breakfasts. He has grown over 6 inches in the last year so I guess he's hungry lol. He's almost as tall as me now (or may even be as tall) and I'm 5'5". He eats me out of house and home. I don't know what I'll do when DS10 hits that stage. I'll have to take out a loan to buy food for them! BUt, enough about food :)
I'm off to do some laundry (yay lol) and finish up my grades. Stay safe if you're in the middle of this mess on the east coast.
So, I have lots of options--dvds at home and an elliptical. We even have a very small fitness center in our neighborhood (very, very small) which includes a decent weight system. But I have just not gotten into a rhythm with the exercise. I have kept up with the squat challenge--110 completed yesterday. But my foot is bothering me again. Ugh. I probably just need to go to the doctor because I am not managing it on my own. :(
@Rose&Mike Thanks for doing the chart! I just looked at it and seeing my progress in terms of % to go really helps the numbers not feel so monumental. 15% done. 85% to go. I can do that easier than 35 more lbs. lol
My pleasure. I love spreadsheets, so I like to see progress as well. I kept a graph in excel in 2010 with every day's weigh in and it was awesome to see the downward trend!
My husband finally listened to me this year for Christmas....the man does an amazing job with gifts (but sadly I am just not a jewelry girl)...this year I have hinted about a treadmill and that is exactly what I got from him. I am so thankful for this gift as it has really stepped my game up when the weather is nasty outside I have no excuse! Treadmills do come in handy. But they are challenging for longer runs! We had one really cold winter where I mostly trained for princess on the tm and I ended up with my fastest half ever. I was so bored on the treadmill that I think I ran faster just to get done sooner! haha. Good job breaking it up and getting it done!
I tried my air fryer last night for chicken drumsticks and they were so good! Crispy on the outside and moist and tender on the inside. Perfect "fried" chicken and it took less than 30 minutes! I am going to have to check this out. I went online and looked at it and it looks pretty cool. I think it might be great for homemade veggie burgers--which are really messy and fall apart.
Which model do you have?
I tried Dietbet too...did not work thanks to this PCOS/Perimenopausal body! But I can control my exercise and my diet...so hoping that PACT will help since I am already doing it anyways through syncing of apps might as well make money at it.
Great job managing that stress Jill! I remember those days when my DS was eating everything in sight. He was 6' tall in ninth grade. And then only grew one more inch. So weird and unusual for boys. He was really ill (horrible food poisoning) and in and out of the hospital for two weeks in ninth grade, so we wonder if that just turned off the growing gene. He is happy though, because he didn't want to be any taller. :)
*****
Ice, Ice baby. Actually right now we are having a lot of sleet, which is so much better than freezing rain. Praying for no freezing rain. My DH is working from home today (he has a 35 mile commute straight north into the heavier snow) so he is not going in. They don't have enough equipment to clean and treat the roads here. They do a little bit of salting, but mostly I think they just wait for it to melt. :)
I am down almost 3 pounds for the week!!! So happy. I only need 1.5 pounds to meet my goal for the month. We planned a trip for mid-May to WDW and I want to be in the 150s if at all possible.
This weekend I am doing small cheats to keep myself motivated--I am making paleo chocolate macaroon pie this afternoon and tomorrow we are having a yummy salad and for an appetizer we are having buffalo cauliflower with either blue cheese or ranch dressing. For dinner tonight--veggie fajitas with homemade corn tortillas. This is all assuming we don't lose power. :upsidedow
Have a great Friday!!
To think about for today...
This is a big issue for me. And I wish it wasn't.
Do you 'let yourself go' when you are unhappy with your weight (ex: hair in a ponytail, no makeup, slouchy clothing)? What do you think is the reason for this shift in self care and how can you combat it?
Weigh in--
I will take weigh ins any time this weekend.
You have three choices:
1. Post current weight and I will do the calculations.
2. Post amount lost since the last time I recorded it. PLEASE REFER TO CHART IN POST TWO. Since I was mia for a few days, please make sure your numbers are correct in the chart. :)
3. Post total lost for the month.
Just make sure you tell me what you are reporting. :)
Let me know if you have questions. I hope everyone is happy with their scale!
This is totally me. I don't wear makeup to begin with unless it is a special get together. I find it such a pain in the butt and I always end up rubbing my eyes :) Ponytail is me most days. With three kids and long curly hair my hair is up by noon. My clothing goes because nothing fits and I am trying to just cover my body up so I go for my biggest comfy clothes I have. I can't wait to fit back into some of my other clothes again.
I lost another 3.6lbs this week so I am way ahead of my goal which is awesome! 13lbs/10lb goal :)
Sadly, I'm also not one who really works hard on my appearance, regardless of my weight. I've got thin, but curly, hair. If you try to control it with overstyling, you end up with a frizzy mess. So, I shower, add leave in conditioner, and let it air dry into it's curls, fluff and go. lol. I also don't wear makeup much because it's irritating to my eyes and skin. So, special occasions only and wash it off asap.
I wouldn't say my weight determines my style, but my style makes adding weight deceptively easy. :worried: I tend to be less concerned about my weight UNTIL I really need to get dolled up (for a wedding or interview or whatnot).
Scrubs are pretty much pajamas so I'm frumpy, but comfortable, even at work.
At home, I tend to wear capris and t-shirts in the summer, yoga pants and sweatshirts in the winter. With clothes like that, it's easy to carry excess weight without paying much attention.
BUT, when I try to find something to wear for a nice dinner out or an interview, the damage I've done with my weight becomes much more apparent.
Fitted tops, dress pants and skirts are not nearly as forgiving. :sad2:
