Why me? Freaky Paranormal Activity DVD problem

So DH has me add Paranormal Activity in our Blockbuster Online queue. I told him I would watch it with him ONLY in the daylight and when DD was at school. Mind you, the only movie that I am deeply afraid of is The Exorcist. However, people I know told me this movie is really scary, so I wanted to watch it in the least scary setting possible.

It arrives yesterday and what do you know, DH has it off today. So we pop in Paranormal Activity. The movie itself wasn't too scary, except for the last 20 minutes or so. The movie ends and DH wants to see the alternate ending. Here's where it gets freaky. I pick up the remote and press menu. Nothing happens. I press fast forward. Nothing happens. Meanwhile, the screen is black. Ok, maybe the movie makers want us to see something else. We wait a minute. The credits come on, then some other credits pop up moving incredibly fast. I press stop. Nothing happens. Credits still flying by on the TV screen. I get up to turn the power off and it still won't shut off!:scared1: DH had to actually shut off the power cord that the DVD player is connected to in order to get it turn off!

At first I thought it was some little gimmick the movie makers put on the DVD to scare the viewers. I search the net and nobody else mentions an inoperable player after watching the DVD.:confused3 DH watches the alternate ending and it turns off no problem when he was done. So now I am freaked out, not so much by the movie itself, but the fact that my electronics had issues after watching it.

Sorry for my long post, I just had to vent about my issue.:scared1:

That movie was extremely boring and then finally soemthing happens in that last 10 minutes. Well, that last 10 minutes stuck with me. Every little noise I heard that night was some demon in my house that was going to pull me out of bed:scared1:

No, it was regular DVD. There were only 2 selections. Theatrical release and Alternate Ending. I don't think I want to explore Demonville right now! :lmao:

I thought Paranormal Activity was a really scary movie, especially the alternate ending.

OP- I am so sorry about your experience!! How terrifying!!

We saw Paranormal Activity one weekend - it was a little scarey.

The following weekend we saw The Fourth Kind - HOLY CRAP! We could not sleep. DD had seen it the weekend before and after we saw it I was honestly surprised that she didn't sleep on our bedroom floor for a week.

I'm a scary movie wuss and Paranormal Activity was like the second coming of The Blair Witch Project.

That is pretty weird experience. I saw Paranormal Activity in the theaters. I viewed the movie more as a suspense type movie and it didn't scare me in the theaters. I watched the DVD on Monday night and seeing the movie in my own sort of scared me and I had trouble sleeping that night.

let me tell you what probably caused the "paranormal" activity :)

you pushed a button on the remote and your dvd player spazzed for some reason and didn't respond right away. Then you pushed a couple more buttons. the dvd player then started responding to whatever buttons you pushed *earlier* (in other words, there was a lag between when you pushed a button and when something happened).

So for example, you pushed menu, it just sat there for a second, nothing happened, then you pushed fastforward and a few other buttons and then power. So then a minute later you're sitting there manically trying to turn it off or something and it's still in fastforward mode from earlier and fastforwarding through the credits and won't turn off (why you had to pull the plug). If you had just sat there and waited a while, it probably would have eventually processed the power request.

I know this because we used to have this sort of thing happen a lot. You're right -- it's very freaky ... it seems like the tv/dvd player is going by itself or something.... we used to have that happen with comcast's on demand and I'd slam a bunch of buttons and thenseveral minutes later it weirdly seemed as though the tv was paging through the menu and doing various things all by itself! :scared1:

There is probably a very logical reason that this happened, but it would have scared the crap out of me! :scared1:

The first time I tried to open this thread all of the internet windows went *poof*

Your paranormal activity went on to me. :rotfl:

Oh no! It's spreading!

themarquis, thanks for the logical explanation. If it were ANY other movie, I would not have thought twice about it. But after that movie ending, I could not help but majorily freak out. It's been a couple hours and I'm still a bit shaken. Hopefully, I'll sleep well tonight.

Just wanted to add that I truly don't believe my copy of Paranormal Activity is haunted by demons. I was just spooked at the end and the 1st piece of electronics I try to use does not function. Honestly, I'm not "as dumb as rocks" ;).

OP, I could have written your post!

Paranormal Activity was the first movie I've received from Netflix, so I thought it was some strange mass produced DVD problem. In fact, we watched it last night!

Did you notice the strange credits? Thousands of names, single spaced, in three columns, that zoomed by. We paused it and it was like the first name Amber with hundreds of different last names, then it went through the alphabet listed by first name.
Now that was strange! Does anyone know what this was?

Saw it last night. Thought that it was very well acted - I really enjoy watching a movie that looks like the actors aren't acting - that they're just being. Oh, and the end creeped me out.:scared1:

Yes, those were the words zooming by and wouldn't stop that worsened my freak out! I have since learned that the movie creators put fans' names in the credits. I guess you could have signed up to be in the credits. Pretty clever.

Thanks for clarifying! Cool idea. I told my husband it was a list of names that the demon had and will possess!
