Why is Scnycronized Skating not an Olympic Sport??

I thought I heard a couple of times that one was supposed to be an Olympic sport. I was looking forward to this exciting beautiful new one for 2006.

Any reasons???
 
Maybe they do it during the skating exhibition at the very end but not as an actual event.
