Why is it that 2 our of 3 reservations this week have us in a handicapped room?

These rooms are not comfortable and quite frankly are hard to live in. I understand they are great for handicapped guests but NOT for those without such needs. I am not happy!!! Waiting for the manager to switch rooms but if we were the last to check in... We would have no options as the resort is full. I checked in on line last week and in person at 9:15 this morning. I don't get it. If they told me our only option was this I would have booked a different resort! Ok. Rant over.

Online check in doesn't help one way or another, maybe they have noted you and/or your account as preferring HC rooms?

We had someone at DVC tag us as VIP's a few years ago. Are rooms were always ready late. After a couple of years I just thought that service was just getting worse until I talked to a front desk CM's about it. They explained that it took the Mousekeepers extra time to do a VIP cleaning and they weren't allowed to release the room until it was inspected by management.

It was a nice gesture on someone part but I contacted DVC and asked them to remove the VIP status from our account. Our room ready times improved.

We stayed in a handicap room at BCV a few years ago. We loved it beacause it had a huge balcony overlooking the pool. We have tried to request it without success since.

Someone has to get them and there are often more than needed by those who require the HC rooms. Just make it a request going forward but keep other requests to a minimum, I generally don't do more than 2 and one is no HC room and it's often my only request.

How does one request this? Calling Member services each time? The online requests don't allow for that type of request. We come about once a month (local) so I think I will try to get it done as a permanent request. We travel with teenagers... Not having a split bathroom is not an option!!

I don't think there's any way to have a standing request. You can do it by email (if you provide the correct info) or from the email link on the website. You say not having a split stay is not an options but the bottom line for those resorts that might bite you, there's no way to guarantee it though you can make requests. The other secret to requests is to keep them general and simple. I try to do no more than 2 and feel that requests should be very general. For example, requesting specific rooms is risky. I'm also clear as to the priority. My requests are usually no HC villa and close together if multiple villas. Sometimes I'll request general location such as close to bus stop at OKW or section at SSR.

Our first and last stay at BWV was in a handicapped studio. I requested a different room but was told we couldn't be moved. The front desk manager said it had to due with when we booked our stay and not anything to do with when we checked in. Anyone else heard of this? I thought it sounded odd but the manager insisted.

We're you calling the "front desk" or at the front desk? Calling gives you a call center that's likely out of state. Could make a difference in the answers and ability to change.

Each resort is free to address requests as they see fit. IF they ordered it based on either timing of reservation or owner vs non DVC owner and refused to displace someone higher up the ladder, I applaud them. If they were just blowing you off and you booked many months in advance, then shame on them.

I was at the front desk.

It was a "last minute" booking in DVC terms. My issue is that when I booked the room it doesn't tell you that since you are booking late you will get stuck with the worst room. If I had known I was essentially booking into a handicapped room I would have picked another resort.

I don't agree, IMO the room assigner needed to book someone into the room, it may have been you or someone else. What I do know is that throughout the day people checking in are changing their rooms for a different view or location or from HC. CM's don't like confrontation so they work to accommodate the person standing in front of them. People checking in late may have been assigned to several different rooms through out the day.

Disney hoped that online check in would reduce the problem and that guests would just take their room packet and go. More often than not the resorts have stopped pre assigning some rooms due to all of the changes that have to make during the day.

Another issue is that each resort seems to have their own policies on room assignments. Most guests would never know but frequent flyers soon realize that the only constant is lack of consistency.

We were checking in at 9am so they could have moved us if they wanted to. I understand that someone had to have that room. My issue was the reason they were giving me for not being able to change didn't seem in line with any real policy.

The key here is if they "wanted to". They don't, it depends on the CM, the manager, the policy at that resort for that day.

Sometimes they will work with you, sometimes they won't.

I would love to know ahead also, personally I likely wouldn't even go if that were the choice. However, given the current system, if you booked last minute, then it's encouraging that they're making a plan and sticking to it. I wish all resorts would take that approach but it varies resort to resort.

To clarify my post above, I was trying to draw a potential line of priority between a DVC owner at that resort vs a DVC owner from a different resort and simply didn't word it very well.

At one point, the BWV did assign rooms (and grant requests) based on when the reservation was made. So it is very possible that they were doing it that way when you stayed there.

AFAIK, when the rest of the resorts went to "room ready", BWV did, too. That said, I do believe they still assign many of the rooms ahead of time and may still use the date the reservation was made to try to grant requests. But it is not always possible to grant requests since there are so many variables.

Sorry you got a room you didn't want. Hope it works out for you on your next trip.

Too bad DVC doesn't work the way Wyndham does - when you book online with Wyndham, you see if you're reserving a handicapped unit. It's built into the reservation system.

We got a handicapped unit once at Sheraton Vistana Villages in Orlando and it was set up a lot nicer than DVC's handicapped units. Actually had a tub (just lower to get into it). Unlike DVC's roll-in showers where the water goes all over the whole bathroom.

You can request and see a reserved HC unit. The issue here is that someone is assigning you an HC unit after you book.

The only time I got a HC room was when I booked an additional night at the beginning of my stay (2 months out at the BWV). Luckily it was only that one night since the rest of my stay was in a standard room cat. The standard room was booked 11 months out.

With Wyndham a regular room or handicapped unit is an actual booking category say like "hospitality house" at OKW is with Disney. Wyndham does not assign handicapped units at check-in unless you actually booked one. I'm just saying I wish Disney's IT had capability to do that, too. That way if you were going to make a last-minute reservation and handicapped units are all that's left, you know that when you book it. With Wyndham, you know that's what you're booking at the time you book it.

By federal law it is a guaranteed booking category if you book it, just like hospitality house. The difference is that Disney will fill the empty HC rooms at the time of room assignment where apparently Wyndham doesn't.

The HC room category does show up if the online system assigns you a HC room that you didn't request and it shows up when the room assigner switches you to a HC room.
