We're very new members and am trying to book a trip for December 23rd-January 1st (16-17). Everyone is talking about walking reservations for early December due to business. I'm nervous about my ability to get the end of the month but some folks on here have said it shouldn't be a problem for me. Why is the popular DVC timeframe considered the beginning of the month as opposed to the end? And I'll ask again: What are my chances of snagging my timeframe without walking it? And if I do have to walk it, how many days in advance can I book? I looked on the DVC site this morning and it'll only allow me to book as far out as Dec 21st. I have 300 points at Boardwalk but will have a total of 410 at the time of our trip due to banking the remainder of this years points. Clearly I need some help!

Look at the points required for early December. It's the lowest season. Late December is the highest. DVC is, in itself, a way to save money, and early December is a way to save even more.

Got it! Low season point values don't have any bearing on my travel times, so I guess I never thought about that. Makes perfect sense now. So in all of your experience I should be ok to book my late December trip on Saturday January 23rd without having to hassle with walking because it's a high point season? Please forgive my ignorance. Still trying to learn all of the ins and outs.

Actually late December is also a very high DVC demand time, just a little below early December, and you could have risks at 11 months out with a Dec 23 start date.

The risk of possibly being blocked out at 11 months out at WDW exists only for certain room categories and it is mostly a studio (and resulting 2BR lock-off) risk: AKV value or club level, BLT standard view, BWV standard or boardwalk view, VGF studios, Boardwalk GVs, and the GVs in the hospitality House booking category at OKW. If you will be seeking anything other than those, you will get what you want at 11 months out and walking is unnecessary. Moreover, even if seeking any of those, chances are likely still fairly decent for most at 11 months out for Dec 23 to Jan 1 other than AKV club level and the OKW Hospitality House area GVs. including because if you are blocked, it may be temporary, and a wait list could come through fairly quickly or just rechecking to see openings over a few days may work

The concept of walking a reservation is to lock in the room you want at least for your intended arrival date before 11 months out. Since reserving exactly 11 months out allows you to book only 7 nights initially, walking in your case would mean going on line at 8 a.m. Jan 17 and reserving Dec 17 to 24. Thus, you get your arrival night and block everyone else from getting the room you have for that night and nights thereafter, e.g., they cannot get the room you have reserved by booking a week on Jan 20 for Dec 20-27, because your room is already filled until Dec 24. Once you have your initial reservation, you then can drop and add nights to it by calling MS. The first call could wait until Jan 23, at which time you would drop Dec 17 through 22 and add Dec 24 through 29 with a Dec 30 check out date, and then add the last two nights you want on January 26.

You should note that there is also no guarantee walking will work because it depends on finding a date open when you can beginn to walk. For example, you might find on Jan 17 that Dec 17 is already gone in the room category you want. Since the third week of Dec is usually nowhere near as high in demand as the rest of Dec, that is not likely to happen but if it does, you just try again the next day to reserve Dec 18-25, and walk from there.

I tried to book Dec 18th thru 23rd, 2015 in a 2 bedroom BWV standard view and it was already booked at 8:00 am on the first booking day at the 11 month mark.

If you are trying to get standard view or boardwalk view, don't assume it won't be a high demand time at BWV :)

In the OP's favor: Beginning her stay on a Friday ( a higher cost weekend night) and having the window open on a Saturday ( some people just cannot get up early on weekends, LOL).

Good luck! I think you will be OK, but as others have mentioned, it may be a problem to book a standard view studio or a Boardwalk view studio. Worst case, you have to book a Pool/Garden view. IMO, that's a bad worst case.the

FWIW, I do think that DVC allots a certain number of the BWV lock offs to be reserved as 2 bedroom villas - at least for some period of time.

Early Dec, low points costs, kids are still in school, holiday decorations are out, MVMCP, and cooler weather.

I love that time of year. My mom and I used to go every year when I first bought DVC. We loved the season but didn't want to be away from the rest of the family for Christmas. We preferred the first week because it gave us time to prepare for Christmas after we got home (finish shopping, etc).

OK. Thanks so much everyone for all of the fabulous clarification! This helps tremendously.
