Why Intelligent Design Will Win

God is most certainly not human, but he is male by nature, and NOT female.
Does he like football? Does he have a favorite team? (No Texas Stadium jokes)

I agree, He is not human, so you really cannot assign a gender. I believe the entity of God is really something beyond our human understanding.

I agree--the idea of God as the ultimate Father is something created to help people understand their relationships to God, but not to assign gender. I think God is above gender.

The human mind cannot possibly comprehend God, really.

Wow. OK, on that note, we have clearly reached the irrational, ridiculous stage of this debate, and I am out. Further arguing is pointless. It really is too bad that more Christians aren't decrying this line of thinking, though.

Ah so instead of answering my question, you call me irrational, ridiculous, and obviously never read the bible in my years of Catholic school (including Dominican college). who's being irrational?

I'm surprised more Christians aren't decrying your line of misogynistic thinking. Oh wait - they are.

Aww....come on hokie.. you KNOW you want to beat the love of Jesus into a few more ppl. :rotfl2:

Jesus was God (but in human male form). God is so great I don't think we have the words/imagination to describe what God is.

I agree 100%!
All that is God and all that God represents is way beyond our human capacity for understanding!

And I agree with Bob S. - God sent the son, Jesus in human form...leads one to believe that God does not truly have a gender.

PS - why does it matter if God is male or female anyway? I do not really care to be honest! God is God, God is good, God is grace...why does God need a gender?

You know what? You're right. God is a guy. A flamboyant, bisexual, drag wearing, HGTV loving, singing Heart in the shower kind of guy.

As to your specific question, I believe that the entity which we usually refer to as God the Father (or the Creator, if you prefer) is infinite. Since God is infinite, God is male/female/neuter. God is everything. I do not have the gall to suppose that I can assign human personality traits to an infinite being. God is inifinitely merciful, infinitely just, infinitely good, infinitely resolute, infinitely unsure. God is the Ultimate Reality, the Ultimate Paradox, about which I can have no true 100% knowledge.

That is how I think about God. That is how I view God philosophically.

How I feel about God? I am a Christian. Specifically (and I know what's going to come after this) I am a Roman Catholic. Theologically I agree with, oh say 95% of the Church's teachings.

Politically I am a liberal, and so I disagree with some of the Church's temporal/political policies.

Regarding other religions, I am a pluralist. My religion is what is best for me, and I believe that it is absolutely true for my own existence. I recognize in most other religions the exact same fundamental principles as in my own. We differ chiefly in ritual practices and a few (usually less than a dozen) doctrinal/theological ideals. Ultimately all religions are concerned with moving the individual away from self and towards an Ultimate Reality (variously called God, Allah, Yahweh, Nirvana, Brahman, etc.) I can say that my beliefs are absolutely correct and still respect and recognize the validity of others' beliefs because it's a subjective universe, baby.

Bottom line, no one has an exclusive monopoly on Truth, and when you argue as though you do, you come out sounding very, very, very stupid. A hypothetical outside observer on our little world, looking down objectively at all our beliefs and superstitions would say that no one has any reasonable, rational, irrefutable evidence or logic to say that their religion or philosophy is right and someone elses is wrong.

(I almost guessed you were a Southern Baptist, and as you're from Virginia, I have a sneaking susupicion you might even be someone I used to know...)

Ah no. We reached that point around this time:

We SHOULD consult the Bible for every answer, we SHOULD NOT form our opinions from scientific studies, Biblical religion is RIGHT, any non-Christian person or country is WRONG, who cares about foreign relations and diplomacy. That is the way it OUGHT to work, but unfortunately never will.

I am Jewish so my views do not include Jesus or the New Testament. ;)

ID is NOT a scientific theory to be taught in the public school system as SCIENCE. That is the problem- People who believe in ID do not believe Darwin's theories (which are logical) and want to erradicate any idea that science and nature could evolve "alone". ID can not be proven, it is just another term for creationism. Advocates for ID wanted to remove themselves from the creationistic idea. They forget that Darwinism can be proven and has been.

ID should not be taught in the public schools. If you want your child to learn that idea, send them to private school or teach them at home. Even the majority of ultraorthodox Jews can mesh Darwinism with their fundamentalist beliefs.

The world was created in "six days" I dont know how long a day was because there were no clocks or calendars or time... time is man made. Because I rest on the seventh day I wish you all a good afternoon/evening, I must get ready for Shabbat.

Incorrect. To be sure, the noun used in the OT is actually not gender specific, and can be used to refer to male OR female, but not just male.

So, why throughout the NT (and in the OT as well, for that matter) is God referred to as the Father, or Him? I know the nouns used in the NT are male-specific? Did He change from neutral to male???

Please.
The Jewish view through the Torah/Tanakh

G-d is Neither Male nor Female
This followed directly from the fact that G-d has no physical form. As one rabbi explained it, G-d has no body, no genitalia, therefore the very idea that G-d is male or female is patently absurd. We refer to G-d using masculine terms simply for convenience's sake, because Hebrew has no neutral gender; G-d is no more male than a table is.

Although we usually speak of G-d in masculine terms, there are times when we refer to G-d using feminine terms. The Shechinah, the manifestation of G-d's presence that fills the universe, is conceived of in feminine terms, and the word Shechinah is a feminine word.
