Why Guns?

Guess we just aren't that concerned with "protection". That's what security systems are for.

Yeah, my security system at home sure helps when I drive down the street, or go shopping...

In this city I have a good chance of getting carjacked or mugged in a parking lot.

DH has a gun, I don't but I'd love to get one, learn to handle it and get a permit to carry....

Here's why......

Sad, but true. I can't find the email, but I have seen the stats that show countries who have "taken away" the public's guns and crime goes up. The law abiding citizens give them up, but the evil keep theirs.
We own them for hunting (we eat every bit of the elk) and protection.

NO, what I meant was in context of the times the quotes were concerning the revolution. Of course they wanted everyone armed, more arms meant a better chance for winning the war. If there were that many people armed for protection against their neighbors and criminals, it's a wonder anyone is left alive.

And, we will always need to protect our nation from tyranny. That threat isn't obsolete. IMHO

OK, maybe I just don't get your point. At the time these quotes were made, weren't we as a country fighting for our independence against an entire country as a united revolutionary force? Isn't there a major difference between then and now? I'm talking about individuals having the right to own guns meant solely to inflict injury upon other individuals, not countries protecting their nation against tyranny.

We were not fighting against another country, we were fighting against our own government which, in the opinion of many colonists, was denying us our rights, and the Constitution was written to prevent the NEW government from doing the same thing. At least, that was the intention.

I didn't say "another" country. I worded that poorly. I know we were colonists of England. My point was , it was a time of revolution where armies were raised, not people shooting each other in the streets with handguns.

Tyranny is less likely to happen when the citizens are armed. Hence the second amendment.

I think that it would instill some kind of unnecessary fears in a child if the child was told the guns were for protection. I don't think its healthy to walk around feeling like you could be attacked at any time.
