Just wondering, I know alot of people on here go Every year or even twice and stay at Deluxe Resorts. Why do you just continue to go without buying dvc?

dont get me wrong i am one of those people :rotfl2:

DVC is just way too expensive for us. We mostly stay value - though do split stays each trip with a night or two at various deluxes or mods. We like taking advantage of deals that come out.
Lately we've been going to WDW 3 times a year - 2010 is going to be 4 times. Looks like next year and then on will cut back to 2 trips per year as kids getting tougher to take out of school, and older (more expensive on dining plan!)
For us... to buy into enough points for the amount of trips we want, just woudl be too expensive.
Even if did only 1 trip per year - we still are coming out ahead, especially since bulk of stay is at value resorts.

The WDW deals that come out (free dining, 4 nights/3 free) make it cheaper to stay with cash than buy DVC. If Disney cuts back on its incentives, I will crunch the numbers again for DVC.

We stay Deluxe every year and DH and I have crunched the numbers many times and its just not worth it.

Just can't understand why anyone would pay all that money up front plus maintance fees every year and not be able totake part in all the good deals, disney has to offer every year. Plus DVC isn't even yours. After a certain number of years, you have to give it back so in reality you don't own just rent.

Plus sometimes I don't know 11 months out where we are going on vacation and if I want a popular resort like BWV during October, its not happening unless I book far in advance.

We just returned last week from WDW but won't be going back for a couple years (been every year for the past 10 years, we want to do other things) I don't want the hassle of having to sell my points so I don't lose money,

Some people view it as a guanranteed vacation. Thats not mine and DH's take. Hey if it works for some people , good for you, but its not for us.

1) we are about to turn 54 and 56. you own your points for 45 years. by then we'll be...um.. older:lmao:(our grown kids aren't into disney, so they can buy their own!)

2) while it makes staying at some of the deluxes cheaper, the points to stay at the moderate and value resorts are ridiculous! we really like the moderate resorts.

3) as stated by a PP, DVC can't take advantage of many of the discounts offered. sometimes we like to go "on the cheap"

4) although I can't list them all, it seems the "perks" keep changing. less and less pool hopping is one, I know. and the points keep going up.. I don't mean the price of the points (cause then it makes sense to buy many points right away). I mean the amount of points it costs to stay at a particular resort. I can understand the costs of points rising.

5) rules keep changing. I know if I had "bought in" as a smoker, I would have been angry that something I bought into for 45 years changed into all "no smoking" rooms.
not getting into a debate here about smoking. just would want to know all the parameters before I invested into something for 45 years.

6) we really don't care for SSR or OKW. too much like condo neighborhoods (for us). we know DVC owners who end up staying there cause that's al that was available. I would rather be at the all stars, myself.

I usually stay at values and moderates. With the discounts available DVC doesn't make sense for me.

I am single - so no kids to pass it on to.

Plus I enjoy my AP discounts and an occasional long Free Dining trip.

I think I really just don't need the extra space that DVC offers. :)

The cost and the fact that we don't go every year. With the discounts we get as Florida residents we can do a super cheap budget trip twice a year and still come out ahead of what we'd pay for DVC.

I am so happy to read some these comments. I thought I was the only one that thought DVC or any timeshare is a waste of money. For what you pay a year, I can stay just about anywhere. I just don't get it. I have had several people tell me that it is a good deal. I do not see the deal at all.

We aren't sure we will be going to WDW every year in the future. Right now it's great but once the kids (esp my 2 yr old) get older, we will want to take them overseas, as well as to other places in the US.

I wouldn't want to pay for something I may not want to use in the future.

People who think the numbers don't work out for them should look into resale instead of buying from Disney directly. We bought our AKL points resale at a significant discount. We used to go once a year at a mod, everyonce in a while at AKL. Now we go twice a year, AKL savannah view every time. The break even point is something like 30 years even after dues and projected inflation are accounted for, comparing once a year at a mod to twice a year at DVC. That's a no brainer to me.

The caveat of course is that you do not finance it. DO NOT. If you can't buy in outright then it's definitely not the right thing to do.

We really aren't bothered by losing out on special offers. Free dining was waaaay too much food for us anyway, and a lot of the times we've gone in the past were times when discounts aren't traditionally offered anyway.

1) I don't want to be locked into going to Disney every year, and while I know you can trade points or bank points, I'd feel guilty about not going.
2) With the maintenance fees, it doesn't make sense to me.
3) In order to get a room with 2 real beds, not pull-outs, you have to go up to a 2 bedroom villa, which is ridiculous. But I can get 2 beds in a value! For the price of DVC, I won't ask my grown daughter to sleep in a pull-out.
4) No mousekeeping every day. If I'm on vacation, I want someone else to make the beds and clean the bathroom! (See also having to put away the pull-out every day.)

We went to the presentation a few weeks ago - we go to Disney twice a year and wanted to start staying deluxe. After having the very annoying sales person, we came to two conclusions:

1. We don't want to be locked down paying maintenance fees for 45 years (or how ever many years it is now)

2. The maintenance fees are a bit high and you don't even get little perks like mousekeeping every day during your visit.

3. After doing some research, it seems it's not that easy to use your points abroad and that's something we wanted to do

4. We don't like pushy sales people so that almost immediately turned us off :rotfl:

Small correction here: the amount of points to stay at a particular resort does not change. It is fixed (by law). The amount for a particular day each year can change, but an increase one place must be offset by a decrease elsewhere. As an example, weekdays next year increased, but weekends decreased (before, DVC'ers were staying Sun-Thurs and then moving to a regular resort for the high point Fri and Sat nights). They can also shift points between seasons, but again, the total number of points to rent the same room for all 365 days cannot change.

We like the Values, we like the discounts, we don't want the commitment, and it's just. too. expensive! We don't have that kind of cash, and I'll be darned if I finance a vacation, let alone 45 years of vacationing!

That and we might (gasp!) want to go somewhere else for once, or even skip a year of vacationing.

Just curious, how much are maintenance fees?

I think those of you who responded as to why you won't buy DVC are listing all the exact reasons why DVC won't work for everyone.

We are DVC members and own at 2 resorts. My dues cost me $900 per year. both my contracts are paid in full so that is my only expense, the dues. for $900 a year I get two 6 day vacations, one in a 1 bedroom, the other in a studio. I have never got "stuck" with having to stay somewhere I didn't want. and we have gone at all different times of the year. Personally I like all the DVC resorts and have no problem staying at any of them. Of course I have some I like more than others!;). You don't buy DVC as an investment, or to get Disney perks. You buy it to have pre paid vacations in deluxe accommodations and to not have to worry about getting discounts or worry about room prices going up. the biggest discount DVC gets is about $100 off annual passes. We do take advantage of that but that is not a reason to buy into DVC. someone mentioned pool hopping. There is only 3 pools we cannot hop over to, BLT, BCV, and AKV. We can hop to any other pool on property. For me, I love planning and can plan a trip 11 months in advance easily. But there have been times I have booked my DVC trip 3 weeks before I wanted to go and we got a room, and that trip was the last week in April! Maybe we have just nee lucky!;)

This is a great thread and I think anyone who is considering DVC should read this and ask themselves these questions that some of you have said.

Oh, one more thing, you can trade out and go all over the world with DVC and use your points for the Disney Cruise, California, and now the DVC resort in Hawaii!!

In order to buy in to DVC I would have to pay a HUGE amount up front, and still pay my annual dues. I don't have the HUGE investment up front in cash so I would have to finance. The interest rates would negate any savings in lodging that DVC offers.

So for now, I rent when it makes sense. This September it made sense. Next September Free Dining at CSR was $600 cheaper than Boardwalk. So we will do FD at CSR.

:dance3:

Well the first thing to say is that if anyone told me I would be buying the time share before DVC, I would have told them they were nuts!.........Just not my thing!

Also every one does WDW there own way, in there own buget and tastes!...We are campers, we started with a pop up tent camper and moved up to a travel trailer and love it !..This was our big vacations, long weekends and maybe a week..never did we do motel/ hotels!

The DVC let us have a great week vacations every year or 2 years........we really enjoy the disney pampering, the deluxe resorts both the DVC and the other non disney Hotels around the country and world. Don't forget the DCL as well... All things we could never have done without the DVC.

As for the costs.....we brought into OKW 1995, payed $14,000 over time, for 230 points. dues started at 600 a year and now are about 900 after 15 years. The DVC payed for itself in the first 5 vacations. When our time runs out in 2038 we will be long gone and I'll let the kids decide what they want to do! :rotfl2:

We have always planned our trips ahead of time and rarely had a problem getting reservations in any resort, but find we when stay at WDW we like OKW the best. Its theming and a bit layed back.....(remember our opinion, not for everyone).

Some folks mentioned perks and rules change..........yes they have and in my mind for the better sometimes...gee welcome to life!

I don't want to start a smoking issue as I do enjoy a fine Havana (don't ask) now and then, but blaming DVC for no smoking rules that are the same around the country is not fair.

I can honestly say if WE had it to do over again we would in a heart beat.
Just our opinion!
