Why Don't We Sit for Parades/Fireworks?

Saw a video from Tokyo Disney not too long ago where everyone was sitting for parades and fireworks... Made me wonder why Disney World and Disneyland don't try to adopt this practice here?

Would make things much more enjoyable for all in my opinion. Curious to hear your thoughts!

Right, it's a potential safety hazard first and foremost.

Second, I think it'd be very difficult to adopt. In our "me first" society, everyone cares about their own point of view. In this case, literally. So one person would inevitably stand, which would block someones' view. They would then stand, and so on.

can you not sit if you want to? i feel like i saw lots of people sitting for both the parades and the shows.
i can see what @gap2368 means about it not being safe. if something went wrong and everyone was trying to leave, people would get trampled. tbf, tho, that would probably happen anyway

You can certainly sit for parades if you want to and are in the ropes, most people don’t. They won’t let you sit for fireworks (not that anyone would once everyone in front of them stands up when the show starts

I don't think it's a safety concern...unless they just don't care about safety in Tokyo. I think it's because they can cram more people into the space if everyone is standing. Stand up, move forward, fill in all the space.

I will never in a million years understand the "it's not safe" argument that people make about this stuff at Disney World.

There are thousands of other events just like this, all across the world, where people sit. Outdoor concerts, movies...even parades. Yes, events in confined places, with limited exits. Why is it that only at WDW (but apparently not at Tokyo Disney!) it's a safety issue?

To your question @pkrieger2287, I've always just assumed that even if the cultural norm was to sit, there is going to be some subset of people who stand to get a better view. And once a few people start standing other people either have to or want to stand. And so that's just how it is. But I agree - I'd love to sit.

Standing generally allows them to squeeze in more people which unfortunately is a priority for Disney these days.

People on the curb at DL are asked to stay seated for the parade. They used to ask people to stand for fireworks but I don't think they do that any longer.

I've seen this tried during HEA, and it didn't go well.

Let me open with, I'm completely content to sit, if everyone sits, it's easier, I don't mind it at all. I'm not going to sit happily if others in front of me are standing, it's not about getting my way, it's about actually seeing things. I'm short. Last time we saw HEA in July the Cast Member was insisting we sit. Making a scene at people that balked at it. So we all sat, the garden section immediately in front of us, across the walkway (fireworks dessert party) was not instructed to sit, or didn't listen. None of us could see anything. One by one, as the show started, we stood up, meekly at first and then with greater irritation. Eventually people behind us make a fit instead of standing, which I suppose is considered more correct, they wanted to obey the rules more than see the show they'd paid extra specifically to see. I don't get that. However, with their complaining, the CM swooped in and insisted we sit. I missed most of the show. If everyone had sat, no problem, if everyone had stood, no problem. The mix only screws those that choose to play nice, and because our culture is to not play nice if it means compromising your wants at all, anyone that isn't fully committed to sitting and not seeing is the bad guy.

It's kind of annoying.

A couple of years ago, my wife and I tried to watch one of the castle shows. All we could see was cellphones and tablets being held in the air to record the show by people in front of us.

Exactly... I'm pretty sure trampling is going to happen no matter what. Look at the most recent incident with the dragon float in FOF.

If they wanted you to sit there'd be benches.

Also a lot of people can't sit on the hard concrete.

You summed it up pretty well here: "The mix only screws those that choose to play nice, and because our culture is to not play nice if it means compromising your wants at all, anyone that isn't fully committed to sitting and not seeing is the bad guy."

Culture.

Because its dangerous.
BTW they do allow it at DLR.
It was ridiculous trying to walk around people sitting on the ground.
Its hard to predict when they are gonna randomly move their legs or when kids are gonna rnadomly crawl to other kids.
Its not like other theme parks where there is a giant lawn area specifically for people to sit and view nighttime shows.

Yeah - We were at DL a few months ago and sat on the curb during Pixar Play Parade and then also had seating in the reserved dinner package section during Fantasmic. I would say they both were some of the most enjoyable experiences I've had with watching parades and evening shows.

I find it odd that in your first post it completely slipped your mind that you did in fact sit at DL.
Why bring it up in the first post when in a later post you mention that you could sit at DL?

Sure sitting would be more enjoyable unless of course a kids hand gets stepped on by someone trying to pass through the sea of people in the dark or you trip on a dang towel!
At least if people are asked to stand its easier for those trying to move throughout the park to do so.

If they want people to sit then they should provide more seating or create an area specifically for it like there are at many amusement parks I've been to.

Actually, at DLR it very much depends on the show. Some shows you are required to stand, like World of Color. They will not allow you to continue to sit, and generally get everybody up and move them forward well before the show. As faras I know they will not allow it for the fireworks either.

For parades you can sit on the curb and within the tape, though if you are toward the back, it won't be practical. Fantasmic! is seated within the proper viewing areas. If you are too far down front though you are watching through the railing.
