Why don't people keep what they buy????

Way to much thought!!!!!!!!!!

The problem I have is people should think before they buy. If you have to return an item or two, fine. When you have to return everything you just purchased that is when I have a problem.

Why do you have a problem with people who return what they just purchased? How does it affect you on a personal level? Are you really trying to say that you don't want to do the job you're being paid to do? Is your employer aware of your feelings? Have you suggested they change their return policy? What was their reaction?

If you really find working the return desk so objectionable, I think it's time to find a new job. I also think you may need a few lessons in "real life." Things happen and people have to return purchases. And, people complain. They complain all the time. Heck, you're here complaining. Everyone does it! Don't take it so personally.

It's just a job. It's obvious that this isn't going to be your career, so lighten up a bit and stop being so judgemental.

You left one out: The person you purchased the items for died.

Happened to me. MIL passed away two days after I purchased her Christmas gifts. Had to return everything. Wondering now what they must have thought at the return desk.

Haven't read anything past the first post, but I know what you mean. I can't believe some of the stuff people return where I work and their reasons. I stand there with my mouth wide open most of the time.

When it comes to matching colors in your house I understand, but some reasons are just plain silly. I think some people really do take advantage of "loose" return policies.

It seriously took me just a few minutes while watching a movie last night (Mr and Mrs Smith for those wondering) - and I do type fast, it's my only talent, LOL. :teeth:

Hey, you asked!

You know what they say, "be careful what you wish for, it might come true". In the OPs case, "be careful what you ask, someone might just answer". :rotfl2:

A friend of the family had a 4yo son who died of Leukemia. He had gotten sick on his make a wish trip (to disney) and had to return home to the hospital. He never left that hospital. She bought a lot of stuff--to make what would probably be his christmas--a memorable one for him. He died on December 21st many years ago. It was quite sad to go with her back to the toy store and return an overflowing cart full of gifts. :guilty:

I bet she would rather have her son back then to have to inconvenience the sales clerk with the return.

People return things for simple and logical reasons:

1. Because it's defective.
2. Because it's not as described - happened to me recently. Bought two bath rugs, same size. Got them home - one is obviously longer than the other.
3. Because later you see the same item cheaper somewhere else.
4. Because it's a duplicate gift.
5. Because you bought it for someone else and it doesn't fit.
6. Because your dh says he wants frick, you bring home frick and then decides he wants frack.

While there are people who abuse return policies, not everyone is out to torment retailers. Most of the time it's also an inconvience to the shopper to return or make exchanges.

I think the OP has a right to vent. People vent about sillier things all the time here on the Dis!

I had a friend who was a serial returner... I couldn't believe it! She would buy the exact same thing in two sizes because she didn't want to bother trying it on in the store... she said she'd try it on at home, keep the one that fit, and take the other back the next day!

For the life of me, I do not understand why this is a problem? As long as it isn't against store policy, then why would it bother you? I like to try things on in the comfort of my own home with the shoes I would be wearing with the outfit, etc.

So far in this thread I have learned from others that I must not have any respect for those that work retail and now I am apparently a "serial returner" because I buy two things and return one.

Ok I read this way too fast and TOTALLY misread it the first time! Thought it said something naughty... :earseek:

As a customer, I don't like to make a return and get the nth degree. Everything is in order, the receipt in hand, item brand spanking new. All I want is the process to be completed. I really don't like getting an attitude on the side.

It's no fun returning things! I don't do it often. But I certainly don't feel bad about it when I do. Things don't always work out!

"Serial returners"??!! Oh my God!

To all those people that are bothered by the fact that people returns things -Two questions - how is it YOUR business?? What do YOU have to do with any of it??

I can't believe how worked up people get over something that they aren't even involved in at all....

Everything that is returned involves an extra transactions and has to be re-stocked/damaged/what not. I don't think there is anything wrong with returning items occasionally. But doing it on a regular basis more than likely just increases the cost of doing business, which is likely passed on to ALL customers.

AMEN. The OP is working retail during the holiday season and just came here to vent. Sheesh, no biggie.

But those customers are the ones who are usually always buying stuff from their store, so the stores want those customers. Sure, they might return 1/2 of what they buy, but they keep buying merchandise.

It would be a tragedy if the OP was venting about someone who had a tragic legitimate reason for returning an item. And as long as they had a receipt..."didn't want it" suffices as a reason. They don't need to go into details.

In all my years of retail--while stuff bothered me..I never vented about something as petty as a "legitimate" return.

The only ones who might have a legitimate grievance would be those who make commission off of these items. And even then--if they did better on the sales floor, then they wouldn't have to worry about customers returning all these items.
