Why Don't People Give Their Location?

I didn't put it in my profile since my user name includes my state!

I do think it would be helpful to at least put it in your post if you are talking about location specific things and it's not listed in your profile.

BTW,
I used to live in Utah. Don't know why people are so negative about it. I really missed the mountains when we moved away - still do. They are incredible and I would love to be right there within just a short drive of some of the best skiing anywhere again!

I'm proud of where I'm from, I like having it on my profile. It feels a little bit like a declaration. :)

Ditto. This happens all the time! Someone will discuss something location-specific and then I glance over to see where they are from and location is either blank or cutsie.

I understand that people don't want to put too much information out there but they could at least mention a state or region in the text of the post when talking about something location-specific. It's almost like they assume everyone knows where they are.

Double Ditto. Drives me

Not really on this board, but I sometimes get that reaction when people find out that I live in Arkansas. Some cannot believe that anyone would move here from the San Francisco area.

You moved there from California???? Just kidding! ;)

I listed my soon to be location because it makes me happy to update it every month!

People who don't list their locations don't really bother me on the DIS boards, but ebay sellers who don't list theirs really tick me off! I like to at least have an idea of how long items I'm considering will take to get to me.

I've heard of people being stalked by other internet users, so I guess I could understand you being careful.

I don't list my location because:

1) Disney Freaks may come to my house & take all my Disney dvds, stamps, and Pooh & Friends Christmas stockings.
2) If you can't figure out what state I'm from, you're not worthy.
3) I'm lazy
4) I don't want you to be jealous. LOL
5) I had a cyber stalker...

I like being nonspecific...although if you searched hard enough, you probably could find my location.

When I lived in Maryland, it was "where O Tannenbaum is the state song", because the state song is indeed sung to that tune.

For a while there, a coworker was reporting my posts (innocuous ones) to a fellow manager-thought she was telling my coworker stuff that she didn't already know. So, for a while my location was "where the thought police monitor my every post".

The daily florida lightning briefly changed it to 'the lightning capital"

West Central Florida is specific enough.

Funny story---back in the old *P days, when I first moved to the little teeny tiny town in the middle of nowhere, I got bunches of emails asking about the "National Home Cooking Restaurant" that was in my town of 2,000. Most people wanted to know if the crabcakes were really as good as they'd heard. Yes, they were and I can go and eat some for ya, lol!

I used "Liquid Sunshine State" as my location because the Pacific Northwest (Washington, in my case) is so famous for the rain.

I am not bothered by people that aren't specific about their location. Some people feel more secure being anonymous, others like to create their "alter egos" through user names, etc. It's really up to the individual how much info. they want to divulge.

As to the previous replies concerning Utah, I spent 11 wonderful years there and am constantly amazed how many people automatically categorize me when they find out that was our previous home. However, I wish I had a dollar for everytime I've wanted to yell: "YES AMERICA, UTAH HAS MORE THAN ONE RELIGION!" :D

My location used to be in my profile (Seattle) but I participated in a Secret Santa gift exchange here on the DIS where you were to try and guess who your SS was. Well, I changed it so my listing didnt match the postmark on my package. And just never bothered to change it back.

Sorry I dont have a more witty response. :) But maybe I should change it to Sarasota or Bust in 05!

mine isn't usually as specific as it is this week......but if you're a fan, you'll know~!

Wow, I'm surprised at how many didn't know what state the "mitten" is, don't ya'll remember your grade school geography? ;)

Well that's a rather snide thing to infer. I will say I remember my grade school Spelling and we were never taught the word "ya'll."

First off, you live in MI. It is commonplace for you to refer to your state as the shape of a mitten.

Secondly, I remember Geography and we were never taught to refer to Michigan as a Mitten. Do you honestly think people outside of the state of MI should know that? How about all of the people from around the world that frequent this board?

Since I was born (not raised) in MI, I knew what you were referring to, but it's rude to be condescending to others because they don't know YOUR geographic terminology.

Born and raised in Virginia. We were never taught the mitten thing about Michigan. I thought you were from the South!

I am from Maryland and we were never taught anything about a mitten.

I don't list it because it's not really anyone else's business. It's not a secret, those who know me know where to find me. :)

Long Island schools, no Mittens in geography, either.

The reason she had a ;) was to show that she was joking...
