Why does the School Schedule have no Summer

I guess we are lucky here in Nebraska. My kids were out around May 20th and start back up on August 14th. We had baseball up until the middle of July as my boys are only 9 and 10. I still feel like summer is too short, it seems something is always going on and as parents we just want some fun time with our kiddos before they are gone. I am also lucky that our school gives 10 days for absences per semester and they can be used for vacations. The teachers actually feel that the trips can be a great learning experience. I am taking my kids to Disney in November and they will miss 3 days.

Our school district has a short summer too. The kids have a fall break, spring break, and a 3.5 week winter break. Anyone know WHY districts have decided to add MORE breaks during the year and take them away from summer? What's the rationale for this? There has to be some logical fiscally related reason. It's always about $$.

Our school is moving to a balanced calendar next year. One of the main rational behind it is that it provides an opportunity for remediation during the year instead of waiting for summer school. There will be 2 weeks off both for fall and spring break and 3 for Christmas. During each of the breaks there will be a week of remediation for kids that are having trouble and one week off. This will enable the kids to keep up with the class and not keep falling farther and farther behind. In turn we will go from 10 weeks off in the summer to 8.

I haven't heard of any remediation during the breaks except for summer. Kids in special ed get ESY programs for a month.

I would just be happy woth consistency across districts where we live. DH is a teacher in another district near us and his schedule is so different than where we live. He finishes in June 2 weeks before DD and starts back 2 weeks earlier. And forget about break! Except for late December, the breaks are very different. Now the sports thing gets me, but my issue is with my coaching DH (cross country practice starts in July?!?!) not the schools.

My kids have a long summer break, I dislike it, it's hot, they get bored - I'm a big fan of the balanced school year - http://www.nayre.org/calendar_comparison.htm
I want to escape winter here - not around Cmas; it's hot here June-Sept, I'll work thanks.

I agree. It's only Aug 1 and ds14 is so bored. School doesn't start until Sept 3. He's been to skateboarding camp, spent a long weekend at the shore with my parents and we'll have a vacation in Aug but still it's a long stretch with not a lot to do. Well, except his summer reading which of course he says is boring too.
I work in a hospital and offered to find him a volunteer opportunity but he says he doesn't like hospitals. I can't blame him, no one does & he's visited his grandmother too many times in one. I'd LOVE 2 week breaks in fall, winter & spring. Sounds awesome for keeping the kids from getting burned out by May and would give families a chance to travel off peak. :cloud9:

When I had first heard of this type of schedule, ds17 was in 2nd grade. I mentioned it to his teacher and she said she wouldn't mind it but so many NJ teachers have a house at the shore, it would never happen.

I can only hope. Never say never.
