Why does DVC have to waitlist, and regular cash customers can get what they want?

After reading and re-reading some of these posts, as well as member guidebook, I would like it if someone could explain to me why DVC members/owners need to wait on waitlists for rooms, while cash customers can get just about any place anytime of year, so long as it is more than a couple of weeks before?

Does anyone think that this is a little lopsided? I am sort of used to calling up and getting what I want when I need it. I am sure I would have the patience for this if it was the only way, but doesn't anyone wonder why the inventory is so lopsided? Or are the resorts just too oversold? Still seems that on principle a DVC member shouldn't have to waitlist too often, or it just means they are selling too many contracts. In a lot of ways, it is a good sign--people like it. In other ways, I think it is a little unprincipled, but I guess it is just because I am an infant of the system.

Any explanations?

Think of different pools of rooms.
  1. Those owned by members
  2. Those owned by DVD
  3. Those given up by members to II
  4. Those given up by members for other exchanges
2 and 3 are available for rent and not for points. 4 is not avaible to anyone except II. 1 are available for rent at less than 60 days out potentially. The pools cannot cross lines until possibly the last 2 months.

Many times I'm able to book without a wait list. In fact, having to use the wait list is something I've rarely enountered.

The wait list is a convenience to DVC members. There is a lot of shifting of plans among the membership during a year and rooms are changing all the time. By using the waitlist, MS is able to move people around in order. With a regular reservation system, if a resort were fully booked, you'd have to keep calling back and hoping you hit it just as what you need becomes available.

a lot of DVC members are going the cruise route - these points immediately go to CRO (or whatever it is called now)

so do the points when the member elected the concierge collection and the other Disney resorts not to mention the adventurers collection.

the only time that CRO does get their hands on points (villa) is when a DVC member makes a reservation at a DVC resort or II - that is it - everything else goes to CRO to rent out to get the money to do these other things.

You generally get one or two members (if not more) every week here asking about the II exchanges. Some ask about the cruises - but they would probably be more on the cruise boards.

alot of DVC members trade out - they brought DVC to trade out and it is there right to do so.

I am sorry you can't get what you want. the few times I have needed the wait list it has come through. Try it and see if it works for you.

Otherwise you could go the WDW resorts way - more points and less space but hey you are at WDW!!!!

I didn't know CRO was involved. That's good to know. I have always found them to be very helpful.

So basically, it is the DVC inventory alone that needs to be booked far out?

depends upon what you want - if the Hawaii trip I think Dean says it 2 years in advance.

I don't fly so I can't help with these type questions.

but on the whole yes - your DVC reservations should be able at 11 months or close to it.

you can go the wait-list - they do generally work.

at the 60 days time - all the points (villa) not sold go to CRO - so it is very important to get your reservations in before that time.
This is in your contract.

hope in the future you always get what you want when you want!
