Why does DCL allow smoking?

As with anything that does not sit well with me. I always just remove myself from the situation and plan accordingly the next time and hope for the best. I will not allow someone/people to ruin my families goods times on board with their own choices.

That is the best thing to do since there is smoking allowed on verandahs... All I was saying was just mearly a idea that all.... Doesn't mean u have to like it or dislike it everybody has there own opinion of how to handle this and everything I post on these boards are my opinion like I Said like or dislike

Money speaks louder than words.

If you want Disney to take any action on banning smoking on verandas, start booking (CHEAPER) staterooms without one and tell them you would have booked a veranda room (A MORE PROFITABLE ROOM FOR DISNEY) if smoking was banned.

While there are more non-smokers than smokers on the ship, according to my marketing friends, smokers in general spend sooooo much more on alcohol (A BIG PROFIT CENTER FOR CRUISE SHIPS) that cruise lines can't totally ban smoking, and have to be careful about how tight their smoking restrictions are.

As I type this, it does occur to me that another option would be to get non-smokers to drink more alcohol, but not sure THAT is a good idea.

I think it would be rather discriminatory to completely ban smoking from the ships.

Allowing smokers to smoke on their verandahs limits the amount of people smoking in the designated smoking areas that are surrounded by common areas.

Some prefer starboard, others prefer port side. Some prefer forward while others prefer aft. No...they should not designate any specific areas for smoking or non smoking.

If you're worried about your stateroom filling up with your neighbors smoke while you're lounging out there with the door open, well DCL asks you to keep your door shut.

My first DCL cruise, we had someone with a scooter that they left parked in the hall. It was a big scooter and seriously took up more than half the hallway. It was a total PITA trying to get around it, and at one point a little girl(who was fooling around in the hall acting rather obnoxious) ran into it and fell hitting her head on the wall. My point...as annoying as it was, there was nothing I, or DCL could do about it. That person needed the scooter just like a smoker needs their cigarette. It was annoying, but so was the little girl being obnoxious. Just like the OP neighbors smoke was annoying.

I am not a smoker, and I completely agree with your vent. Unfortunately, before going on any vacation where you will be surrounded by hundreds(thousands) of other people, you just have to be able to take the good with the bad.

I wish DCL would, if they are going to continue to permit smoking on balconies, restrict it to one side of the ship like the common areas. That way, smokers could choose a balcony on that side if they want to smoke, and those of us with severe allergies to smoke could make sure we pick the other side.

Everyone is happy (well, most people anyway).

Food for thought before I turn off the computer for the night:

If smoking were 100% banned because people can't stand the smell of it, or get sick from it (NOT including people with respiratory illnesses/issues) then are we also going to demand a ban on:

1. People who get in a crowded elevator who haven't bathed

2. Babies/toddlers with poopy diapers

3. Women/Men wearing too much perfume or cologne

4. Alcohol because you can smell it on someone's breath from 5 feet away

5. Elderly/infirm wearing Depends

I could go on, but I doubt it's necessary. Point is.....are we going to need the "Stink Police"?

Every one of the above makes me want to barf.
Remember, I said "except for people with illnesses".....smoking stinks...it truly does......but it is NOT going to kill anyone other than the person doing the smoking. Especially not during the length of a cruise.

I don't think it was asked to be banned just controlled a little more like I had said earlier I am a ex smoker so I agree with both sides... But there needs to ba a compromise somehoe

Handicapped Accessible balconies are hard enough to come by - let's not start designating half of them as non-smoking and the other half as smoking balconies. I don't want to see further limits put on those who are in wheelchairs because they do or do not smoke.

It's not like the stateroom itself would be smoking or non, just the balconies. If your primary concern is in getting an accessible stateroom, then restricting the smoking to one part of the ship wouldn't affect you.

Has anyone ever complained to guest services about the smoking and successfully had their room changed? For what I am paying for my balcony room, I don't think I should have to put up with that.

Yes. On our last cruise in April on the Fantasy the cabin next to us had 5+ smokers on their verandah. We are from California which has very strict anti smoking laws, so the smoke really bothered us.

We called guest services, they found us a room with the same configuration on a lower deck, I was VERY impressed with how it was handled. We've always sailed with a verandah and this was our first time having this problem.

Although I am not a regular smoker, I do enjoy smoking a cigar while cruising but only on the outside top deck. Hopefully, they won't ban that. I would not like smoke from a previous passenger or next to my verandah. That's just me and like some have stated I would remove myself from the situation or do something that would annoy my neighbor some how! Nah, if DCL allows it we would have to deal with it.

Come join me on the Top Deck for a cigar after 9:00 pm to talk story as we say in Hawaii and eat some snacks. It doesn't get any better than that!

There are only 2 HA 1-bedroom and only 1 HA concierge family cabin (decks 11 and 12). They are only the Port side. What if that's the non-smoking side and I needed smoking?

In addition to those 3, there are only 6 more HA balconies on the Dream/Fantasy (basically evenly spread between the 2 sides). If you split them into smoking balconies and no smoking balconies, you've just cut the inventory in half for those who need that cabin who smoke.

People will complain no matter what, and DCL knows this.

So if smoking is on one side of the ship only, what about folks who book GTY cabins? Or GT rates? Then it will be, I didn't know I could end up on the smoking side. Or folks who upgrade at the port, or get pixie dust upgrades. It'll only be worse, if you confine smoking to one half. Then your odds are much better to end up near smokers!

I don't smoke and I never have. But, some people on here act like they're going to die if they ever smell it. I'm from California where we have very strict smoking laws, and I rarely encounter it. When I travel around the U.S., though I find a LOT of other states/cities where it's far more prevalent. I guess there are no DCL customers from the South.

My suggestion if you find a smoker next to your cabin (and its bothering you)...just talk to them politely. Remember that most smokers are keenly aware of how they're perceived by others, and are maybe even a bit embarrassed by their habit. Lecturing or being indignant just put people on the defensive- in any situation. Be kind, and most people will be kind back.

That said, in 9 cruises (most in a verandah) I have never had an issue with a cigarette smoker in the neighboring verandah! I bet most people haven't, although obviously some have encountered real problems. My DH does enjoy the cigar up on deck 10 like a PP said, or even better, Meridian.

We recently sailed on the Fantasy in stateroom 7182 which has a navigator's verandah in the aft part of the ship. This would be a great location if you wanted a verandah but needed to avoid smoke. The side wall closest to the front of the ship was completely enclosed, and there were a few oceanview staterooms right next to us. With the smoke blowing towards the back of the ship, I feel like it would be mostly blocked from this verandah location. If there was smoking on the verandah next to us, it would blow away from us as well. The view was partially obstructed, but it was a nice compromise to not having to worry too much about smoke. It's also slightly cheaper than a regular verandah

Amazingly, almost 30% of the population in the U.S. Most of them under age 35 it seems, so prime Disney customers.

Much much higher in other parts of the world. We met a nice couple from Armenia on our Alaska cruise on HAL last summer. Both were smokers, both respected the restrictions. But they said such restrictions would be unthinkable in Armenia.
It is an issue I suspect the cruise lines and Disney parks have to deal with since they do draw an internaitonal crowd.

My husband smokes I have asked that he quit he won't. We have no children because of this. He obeys the smoking rules while at WDW and on the cruise ship. We get a balcony when we can afford them. But the cruise industry will never totally ban them I just don't see that happening. They tried a non smoking some years back that did not work either. They bring in a lot of $.

In Seattle it is probably 10% or less. However most of the homeless people I see smoke. From what I seen smoking is highly correlated with income level so I don't believe it would be a big hit to Disney if they banned smoking. Most of the young people smoke pot not tobacco. I believe they think it is less bad for their health. It is still bad for you though.

I actually don't think it is fair at all. Smokers can enjoy their verandah at will while those who can't tolerate smoke for health reasons are not able to use ours unless our neighbors are not.
