Why does DCL allow smoking?

Thank you both so much! It was a very difficult fight but I am luckier than most. Many have deformities as a result of surgery. I too would have if I didn't move back home to MA to receive treatment at Dana Farber. LA hospital wanted to cut me ear to ear. I'm doing great and I'm a great example for my 3 boys. Unlike smokers who tell their kids not to smoke yet they do!!!!

I don't understand the logic behind going outside to smoke or holding your cigarette out the window....yet you inhale that nasty stuff into your lungs and body??? Anyway......

I agree with you P'ColaBeachBum that breathing fresh air is a right but I really doubt we will ever win this war. I remember flying with my parents and you couldn't even see the cockpit from the haze of smoke in the plane. P.S. CONGRATS ON 5 YEARS! Many more healthy years to you!!!

It's at least much better now days. I still "fake" cough when I go by the inconsiderate (eh hem - insult withheld) "smokers" that smoke outside entry doors to stores.

Thanks, Baleeve...I was lucky too in that instead of cutting through my chest and spreading ribs the surgeon cut through my back to remove half a lung. It was a long painful recovery but so far so good. (sorry if this grosses any smokers out, but you may have to go through it one day)

Many more healthy years to you as well!!

*off soapbox*

I live in California and the only real time I 'see', 'smell' or have to 'deal' with second hand smoke is ironically when I go to Disneyland and its because the one place that smokers can do their thing is right in the middle of a tight corridor between the Matterhorn and the Nemo submarine ride. It always catches me off guard since I don't have to deal with this hazard any other location I go in California. Thank goodness!

There is no smoking area in Tomorrowland at all, never has been.

The only smoking anywhere close to the Matterhorn is on a deck/dock, down on the water, as you would be on your way toward Small World. WAY far away from anyone passing by.

It does not look very far to me, at least as seen on Google Maps.

That's the old one. It's been moved for at least 5 years. If you could zoom out and see the water area that's a little further above that area, it's there now. And there's a long ramp leading down into the smoking area, so people aren't walking by anywhere near it.

I have a picture of the area I'm talking about in my Photobucket account, but I can't get the stupid thing to load.

I am finding these threads quite humorous. I can't believe how many of them are started up, at least once a month. Posts are repeated (to the point where I double check to make sure this is a new thread I'm reading). It's getting old and goes nowhere. I wish they would be closed before they even have a chance to get started. I will no longer read them. When I signed up for Disboards, I thought I would get a lot of great information from friendly, non-judgmental, fellow Disney lovers. That has not been the case in a lot of these threads. If you have an issue with the way Disney does things, complain to them or go elsewhere. Stop all of the immaturity (i.e. fart sprays, etc. at "offending" neighbours) and negativity. Go to the fun posts and post funny stories and good tips and make others excited to cruise with a line that you love!

Rant over. Thank you :goodvibes

Wait until you've been a member on here for 11 years, like I have, if you really want to see things repeated over and over and over.

The biggest problem is that new members don't use the search function to find the answers they're looking for.:confused:
People whine that it doesn't work....but it does. It just takes more time and patience than some are willing to put into it.

Has anyone ever complained to guest services about the smoking and successfully had their room changed? For what I am paying for my balcony room, I don't think I should have to put up with that.

I don't think there's any guarantee that even if you asked to be moved, you would be put in another verandah stateroom that doesn't have smokers in the room next door. They would have to canvass everyone in the surrounding staterooms before moving you there. The only way to ensure that your neighbors' smoke won't bother you is to move to an oceanview or inside stateroom.

It's not against the board guidelines to post a thread stating that you don't like DCL's smoking policies. There's also no rule that only positive, uplifting posts are allowed as it is a discussion board and is meant for discussion of the bad as well as the good. What will get a thread closed is arguments and attacks (no thread closing by me here, this isn't my board). With a thread like this one, you know what you're getting from the title of the thread, why open it and read it if you know you won't like what it says?

I'm VERY sensitive to smoke - it makes me incredibly ill. I've been on 6 DCLs and have never once been bothered by the smoking. Just my $.02!

Despite many searches (and lots of reading), I haven't found anything that answers the OP's question. Perhaps that's why it keeps coming up. Despite much conjecture, DCL has apparently not given their reasoning. Maybe I'm not good at searching.

Please provide us a link to the answer, and then close the thread.

Somewhere back in this thread, I tried to answer the OP's question, but the truth is, no one except DCL really knows WHY they allow it. They just do.

When I mentioned using the Search function, I was talking about why so many topics (not just this one) are repeated over and over again. I wasn't suggesting that the reason why would be found in any kind of search.

I'm not really sure the OP wanted an exact reason as to why....I think the OP was just opening the topic for discussion.
As to closing it, see TDCNala's post above.

I read this one because I was hoping it would contain some different information, it does not. There are always personal attacks on these types of threads, in this one in particular, that smokers are poor and shouldn't be able to afford a Disney cruise anyway and that they should be assaulted for doing what is within the DCL rules. How is this not an argument? I'm sure if I searched for "smoking" most, if not all of the threads are closed. It's just the same thing over and over and the judgmental comments about others is making it difficult to be excited about my cruise if these are the types of people that will be on the cruise with me. I did state that I won't read these threads any more because IMO they don't serve a purpose. The OP asked a question, it was answered (by a lot of I don't knows because unless Disney sends out a memo that will always be the answer) end of story, time to move on.

As noted, this isn't my board and I don't have jurisdiction, but I read it and haven't seen any suggestings that smokers should be "assaulted."

Before they banned smoking in bar / pubs / clubs it didn't bother non smokers then when they say in a smokey bar / club, I have booked a Disney cruise on September and I book a balcony just so I can have a smoke, I done drink so will I start to complain regarding the smell of stale beer people just like to moan for the sake it

OK, thanks. I'll look it up

I was trying to add a bit of levity to the thread 'cause we all know where this one is going. It sounds like the fan isn't going to work too well so perhaps a can of deer piss or FART spray would work better...goes looking for the LOL emoticon

Just an example re: smokers being assaulted. There have been others on other posts as well. Or saying they should be left behind at port, pulled behind the ship in a dinghy, thrown overboard, etc.

I'm sorry....you have decided it's time to move on?? Who are you? Don't read the thread if you don't like it. This is my first cruise and I learned a lot by reading this thread. I never even knew people could smoke on the balcony, so now it's something I realize I might have to deal with. Why did you open the thread, only to come on here and tell us this is "old news to you" (again...who are you?) and that we should use "search" as this is irritating to you. What? I'm not sure how the smoking thread would ruin your excitement for your cruise. I'm sure you will be OK.:thumbsup2

The couple of posts that have been a little bit inflammatory were made by people with very few posts on the Boards, meaning that they're new to the DIS and probably aren't aware of all of the "Do's and Don't's".
For the most part, I think this thread about smoking has stayed really, really reasonable.

I'm not sure why it's bothering you so much. It would be easier for you to just not read it. Or...is there a way to block it? I know you can turn off notifications.

I actually never said anyone should use search, first of all. I have already explained why I opened the thread, hoping for some new information. It isn't only this thread that has ruined my excitement, there are several others that have the same outcome and are brought up constantly. I don't have a problem with someone asking the question or saying that they don't like something. My problem is the judging and nastiness that happens almost always with posts about smoking, child rearing, out of control children, etc. The question was answered and it is time to move on from all of the negativity. I also didn't know smoking was allowed on the balcony when I booked and I did find it useful information but I didn't feel the need to attack anyone for it and I don't understand why others do. All of the "who are you" comments are what I am talking about...not sure why you felt the need to go there.

I agree, this is not the worst I've seen on here. I think my post came from a culmination of a lot of the posts I seem to be reading on here. I just don't understand the negativity and the judgment and I'm frustrated. Maybe I'm just too sensitive for the Disboards or at least these types of threads. I'll just stick to the fun and/or informative ones and stay away from these ones. :goodvibes

That IS weird that smoking is still allowed on cruise ships - especially in a time where smoking is being banned everywhere else, even in many public parks and fairgrounds. Perhaps soon this will hopefully change and it'll be banned on cruise ships as well. If someone has an addiction to nicotine, they can just as well wear a patch or use one of those e-cigarettes, can't they? Perhaps Disney cruisers should start up a petition? To get it banned outright or at LEAST relegate one SECTION of balcony rooms as the smoking rooms. Why should people with smoke sensitivities have to always be "on guard" against smoke? They're not the ones who made a choice to have sensitivities.

The new viking cruise ship that is coming out will only allow smoking on one particular area of the ship and not at all on verandahs. It would be nice if disney would do the same
