Why do people "nap" in their cars at lunchtime

I used to work at a place where we did ten hour shifts, starting at 6:00 am. By lunchtime a lot of us needed power naps in order to get through the day. Unfortunately, we had an administrator at the time who didn't like us putting our heads down in the break room and would write up anyone caught doing it. We had no choice but to go to our cars. Luckily we were in a parking garage and not in the sun.

I used to do this all the time when I was pregnant. . .never imagined anyone judging me or considering it unprofessional. :(

The reason I find it unprofessional is because she parks in the very front spot in plain view of the entrance/exit of our large building and is very obviously in deep slumber - mouth open, snoring, etc. Many people walk by laughing and making comments. She may have some illness (she's not PG) but that being said, don't park in the first parking space in plain view of all associates. Drive around to a quiet spot. At a place of business I believe that looks very unprofessional, especially one that has vendors and senior management on site every day. (I work in the HR department for a large Supermarket chain).

Personally, i'd rather my co-workers and manager not see me in that state regardless of if it's my lunchtime or not.

If I were an employer, I think I'd prefer employees who sleep in their cars on lunch hour to employees who post on bulletin boards when they're supposed to be working.

But that's just my preference.

Some people smoke in front of the office building and some nap in the cars. good grief go do something productive with yours and no I dont sleep in my car but my friend does all the time and management does not care. who cares what someone does on their own time.

Just be GLAD they are not doing SOMETHING else!!!!

;) :p  ;) Get my DRIFT?!?!?!?!

Aaahhhhh, yes............I've seen a certain FedX truck "rockin & rollin'!!!!!!

Some people just don't have a CLUE what you can see from a TALL building!!!!!!!:scared1: :faint:

Wow....I didn't realize I couldn't have an opinion on something without getting slammed with personal attacks about MY work habits.

Can't I find something unprofessional that I truly feel is? I guess the answer to that is no.

Kimberle, your post reminded me that we had the same type of extracurricular activities going on in our parking lot before we downsized a number of years ago. Amazing what lengths people would go to to have a "nooner"! :earseek:

(But then, some of these people were using the building's infirmary for the same purpose . . . gross!)

Sure you can. It's just that others don't believe it to be unprofessional. To each their own, I guess. :)

I suffer from insomnia. Some nights I may get 3 hours of sleep. There have been times when alone in the office, I have laid my head down on my desk and taken a quick catnap. True you may find it unprofessional, but you don't know why she does it. She may have a very good and legitimate reason for doing it.

Honestly this woman could be like my mom who is severely depressed and doesn't sleep much at night...so during her lunch break she takes a nap in her car. As a member of HR I think it is your duty to advice her boss of your thoughts..and if she/he agrees...then she/he will ask her to park away from the building....otherwise...butt out.

I nap in my car all the time!!!!

If traffic is sailing smoothly and I get to work early, I'll nap in my car.

If I just didn't get enough sleep the night before or my body just needs it, I'll go out to my car and nap at lunch.

If it's a nice day out I'll go out to my car and read a book, usually resulting in a 20 minute cat nap as well.

I love naps :) :) I could use one right now actually! ;)

Maybe she goes out to her car at lunch to listen to her XM radio and just happens to fall asleep sometimes. :D

OUCH - zipping on flame resistant suit (again).

What she's doing isn't illegal or against HR rules, so I don't have anything to "report".

The original point of my post was that I just don't understand someone doing that in full view of their Managers, co-workers and vendors coming in and out of a very professional office building. Believe me, I have a toddler, FT job, DH in school for his Doctorate, etc, etc so I know tired.

I'd never sleep in plain view of my boss, even on my lunchbreak. Apparently i'm in the minority who feel that way.

Maybe she has narcolepsy.

Maybe she just likes sleep. What's wrong with that? Our society is so hung up on being busy, and the attitude is that people who rest are lazy. I like to sleep. I never get enough sleep and you can find study after study showing that people never get enough sleep. Those who do rest are looked down upon in this country, which IMO is so wrong. There's nothing wrong with sleep and people should get more!

:o

Maybe someone can give me a good reason why people do this. I know if I were to fall asleep in the car, i'd be even more tired returning to work.

You've been given a lot of reasons now.

Wow....I didn't realize I couldn't have an opinion on something without getting slammed with personal attacks about MY work habits.

I didn't see any personal attacks. I have to agree with Hagred, if sleeping is considered inappropriate, posting on the net during business hours must be a big no-no.

You can have any opinion you want, people DO NOT have to agree with you, not even on the CB.

Apparently.

If I worked in a place with a parking lot and my car was in there - I would do it for sure. I have to settle for sleeping on the train ...sigh....

I personally think it is unprofessional to be seen doing it but I don't think she is unprofessional by taking a nap.

I have once needed to do so but I would never have done it where a manager could see me.

Her public image must not be as important to her as yours is to you.

Same thing goes for people who have sloppy desks and those who don't.

A manager will have more confidence in an employee that has a nice appearance, takes care of their environment and personal hygene...

If I was a manager from head office coming down to visit your office and saw her snoring away, I would think that unprofessional. Sorry but I would.

I'm not saying that she should not be allowed to but I personally think she should try to be less "In your face" about it.

Just my 2 cents...

P.S.

Why do so many of you seem to be accusing the OP of posting while at work...??? A lot of people don't work 9 to 5 so it is quite possible that she is posting from home.
