Why do people hate the Proud of your Honor Student for Bumper Stickers?

Yup that they think people who plaster themselves in picture buttons etc are overly involved in their childrens' lives and are desperate for attention. :teeth: ;)

Meeeeeee-ooooooowwwww!!!!:cat::cat::cat:

I don't see it as any different than a baseball fan wearing their favorite player's jersey to a game. When we go to Tiger games, I bust out my Verlander shirt and my son always wears his Cabrera jersey. He even wears it when he is just watching a game at home on TV. He thinks it brings Cabby luck. :shamrock: When I go to the middle school wrestling match, I stick a button of my son on my coat (or shirt) cuz he's the one I root for most. I hardly see how that means I am desperate for attention.

I can't imagine why that bugs people. Nobody's trying to pin a button on your shirt or put a sticker on your car. Geez.

Family Fun Mom, you and your home sound like a lot of fun! Keep wearing your buttons and displaying your stickers. Your enthusiasm is for your kids, and most kids love knowing that their parents are their biggest fans. :thumbsup2

There probably is no difference really. I think the other poster was rude.

I think it is just different than what other places do. People would think it is odd here. We just wear the colors and logo wear for school events. Nothing right or wrong about how someone shows team spirit!

:thumbsup2 Exactly the Honor Roll stickers are actually a real "trophy" for an accomplishment, not half the dribble that is given out to kids like participation trophies.

I still dont see it that way, the people who have said they have these bumper stickers (we dont at our school) have said that they put it on their car bc their kids were so super proud of the accomplishemnt and being awarded the sticker. They said Junior brought it home and asked Mom/Dad to put it on the car. So it is a "trophy" for the kid in my eyes!

Just to clarify when my kids make honor roll they receive a certificate, and a letter from the principal. That is their real "trophy". A bumper sticker is a novelty item given out so that parents who have no sense of humility can proudly display to the world just how special their child is. The rest of us can proudly display our child's certificate inside the closed pages of their scrapbook.

I wouldn't put of these things on my car. Why would I brag about something I expect my kids to do? It's an expectation in our house. You do it and move on.

So if your child came home all excitied that they received said bumper sticker along with the certificate and ASKED you to out it on your car like the other parents you would tell them too bad, I am not putting that novelty item on my car?:confused3

I absolutely would tell my kids that no, we don't deface our cars with bumper stickers. They could tack it to the bulletin boards in their rooms or we could stick in on the fridge with magnets (not the adhesive) for a bit, but on the car? Fuggetaboutit.

The schools try to get the kids spun up for lots of stuff we don't go for (fundraisers, for example). They know the house rules win.

No, I wouldn't put it on my car however it wouldn't be worded "too bad I'm not putting that on my car" My kids aren't fragile snowflakes, they can handle the reason why we wouldn't be putting that on our car, without it damaging their self esteem for the rest of their life ;) We have raised them that they should always be proud of their accomplishments, but we have also taught them to be modest and humble about those accomplishments, and not just in academics but in all aspects of their lives. We have shown them all time and time again that we are proud of what they do, without advertising it to everyone else. Even my youngest understands this, my middle school honor roll students are certainly capable of it too.

I would probably do the same with a bumper sticker bc I dont want that on my car, too messy. But I would probably display a magnet bc my car already has school and WDW and DCA magnets.

I still think people are putting way too much stock into people's pysche about these darn bumper stickers.:lmao:

One button pic, maybe . . . more than that definately too involved. I think of some of the "swim moms" who adorned themselves with the kid's ribbons.

You know, if you don't like to put a bumper sticker on your car,you can go and buy magnet sheets with adhesive backing at Micheals or AC Moore and stick the sticker on. You can make any bumper sticker into a bumper magnet. I do that with everything I put on my car.

meh, there are kids that aren't on the honor roll that work just as hard.

Exactly.

I have no problem with the "my kid is an honor student" stickers. They just don't impress me much. They say nothing about how much effort went into being an honor student. Some kids no doubt work their tails off to achieve that honor, but many kids are "gifted" and it comes very easily to them. I'm far more impressed by a student with learning disabilities who busts his or her butt to make a 2.5 GPA than I am a gifted student who studies very little and still achieves high grades. Unfortunately, kids who work hard and still fail to make the honor roll rarely get acknowledged. I'm not saying this out of bitterness or jealousy at all. I was an excellent student, but I always felt really bad for classmates who worked hard and never seemed to be noticed. I don't think the world should stop acknowledging the really bright kids, but I do wish we would find ways to acknowledge kids who work really hard and still fail to make the honor roll.

Would you say the same thing about the child who works really hard playing the violin but doesnt make First Chair vs someone who is naturally gifted in music?

Would you say the same thing for the baseball or football player who gives 110% but doesnt get the same recognition or playing time as the gifted athlete?

Just curious...to me in every realm of life there are going to be people who work their tail off and yet will only be average and then there will be others who are gifted in certain areas and things will come easy, but based on some of these posts it is ok for that to happen in sports or music etc but not in academics:confused3

You know what award always kind of bothered me? Perfect Attendance. I never understood why that is considered an accomplishment. To me it just means they either were lucky enough to never get sick when school is in session, or they came to school even when they were sick (probably sharing their germs with my kids and getting them sick so they miss out on that "award").

It never bothered me enough to make a stink about it but it always crosses my mind when they hand that one out at award ceremonies. But the kids who get it always seem happy and proud, so more power to them, I guess. :thumbsup2

Our school district gives out the magnetic honor roll bumper sticks that won't damage the car. I am very proud of my children. But, I just put them on my refrigerator. Just like I don't put bumper sticks of where I vacation. I don't like to draw attention to myself--even if it is positive. Just like to blend.

Perfect attendance is for those who don't excel at academics or sports. Some kids can't keep up when they miss school so they go in sick and get the attendance award. You have to give them a reason to be happy and proud. :rotfl: :thumbsup2 Seriously though the schools lose money every time a kid calls in sick so they try to give the kids a reason to show up sick or not. If they don't have a fever and are not vomiting or coughing so bad they disturb class they are told they need to be there in our district.

Me too! Even as a child I never understood that award. There was a girl in my sisters class who had perfect attendance K - 8th grade. My mom's reaction was "she must live a really boring life!"

And I think you're absolutely right that in encouraged people to send sick kids into school, which isn't a good goal at all. I'd rather see a "no missed homework" award or something (that can include the homework the kids did while home sick.)

Also, my school, every year, gave out an "effort award" and an "improvement award".
It often went to exactly that kid who people were talking about - the kid who worked incredibly hard but didn't quite make disntinguished honors or whatever. It was actually a much bigger deal to get those awards, since only 2 kids in the whole class got it each year.
I like those awards. But if my kid got one of them, I still can't picture myself putting it as a bumper sticker on my car.
