Why do people feel so superior because they can spell?

I agree, OP. DBF is dyslexic and absolutely cannot spell, but I consider him one of the smartest people I have ever met. One has nothing to do with the other. I have an English degree and have always been a good speller, but I would feel AWFUL if I lorded that over someone accidentally. That's just so rude to me. Everyone has talents, and with spell check, there's no need for spelling to be the "talent" that outweighs all others.

Correct. And if you have dyslexia (my wife does) she just keeps word up in the background. She types here posts there, spellchecks them and then cut/pastes into whatever forum she is posting on.

Kids make fun of kids. If it wasn't for spelling it would be something else. It has been like that for ever and will continue.

I am a terrible speller and if it weren't for using Firefox with built in spell check I would have way more errors. I think grammar errors that are obvious (like double negatives or completely wrong words) are much more telling then spelling, at least in an informal setting. They are much worse when spoken then typed though and you can't tell someone can't spell when they speak.

Actually,it's THAN typed.;)j/k!!

I happen to be a very good speller, but it has become a sore spot with me when I see others made fun of for their spelling. I do have to be careful about two issues 1)sticky keys and 2)dyslexic typing. There are SO many reasons why things get spelled incorrectly. If you are good at spelling, consider yourself blessed, but remember that a less fortunate speller does not have to go above and beyond your effort on a message board just to make you happy. I don't think they are being rude. I think it is harder for them and others should lighten up a little. It is a message board, not a serious piece of literature!

:rolleyes1:goodvibes;):goodvibes:rolleyes1 It is so easy to do, thus the reason I think it should never be pointed out on a community forum.

...I dunno - I cood nevar figgure it owt.....:confused3

I don't know but it's a sin I've been guilty of. Poor spelling makes me cringe.

I despise poor spelling and grammar (although a few adult bevs will lead me to be sloppy here on the boards!) but the issue is not the poor grammar, spelling, etc on your DDs part but the lack of compassion and understanding by the kids! THEY need a lesson in what people with disabilities (which is what your daughter has!!!!!) goes through on a daily basis! I can tell you that were those my kids, they would have a "come to Jesus" talk real quick about running people down who struggle/cope/adjust/deal on a day to day basis. Mom's problem with language skills are not the issue if she does in fact have a true problem.....it's the kids!

Op I'm sorry your dd was made fun of that is never any fun. But I do agree kids are mean and it will always be something that a kid will be made fun of.

But i do have to agree with in an informal setting such as this (the dis) that while it may bug some people that there are misspelled words or that there are some incorrect grammar doesn't mean that it should be pointed out. There are lots of things that bug me but if I let them get to me I'd be nuts so I choose to let people be themselves and if they can't spell or use proper grammar than let them. It really isn't hurting anyone. I could see if it was for work or something important but here on a chat board?? ummm NO! :hippie:

I can't spell my way out of a paper bag. BUT ... I have enough pride in what I write that I spell check everything. When people don't bother to use spell checkers because it's "just the DIS" then I feel disrespected as a reader.

FWIW, one of the reasons I use Firefox is because of its built-in spell checker.

But that's the problem. I think those people who feel so superior do NOT KNOW that people who aren't good spellers are not dumb.

You are either a good speller or you aren't. Being a bad speller does not make someone stupid.

I'm a decent speller and feel lucky that I am. I'm a terrible typist. I have poor grammar. I love a good double negative every now and then. I think it comes from being from Jersey and moving to the South. I picked up a southern accent and a lazy tongue.

Mushy, I'm sorry your daughter was picked on for her poor spelling skills.

OK, what's wrong with some of you so-called Disney World lovers? ;) I'm surprised no one has popped with the quote from HOP by Andrew Jackson...

"It is a damn poor mind indeed which can't think of at least two ways to spell any word."

Poor grammar and spelling make me cringe. But I don't think I have ever corrected anyone, unless it was my kids. But English was the only subject I liked and did well at in school. Horrible at math (yeah, I know...it's a fragment). Thank God we don't do math on this board, I'd be flamed into oblivion. I credit my decent usage of spelling and grammar to being an avid book reader at an early age. BUT, I do have some "problem" words. Like "necessary". I can't ever spell it without looking it up. Oh, and "nausea" is a tough one. I just recently figured out how to spell "restaurant" without looking it up.
I really don't like it when people point out obvious typos. Actually it bothers me to see anyone picked apart for their spelling or grammar.

I agree with this.

My DS15 has great difficulty with spelling because of his dyslexia but has a high IQ. When he was younger we spent hours studying spelling words. He always made a 100 but it never carried over.

His friends joke with him while texting. "Dude, seriously... did you just misspell from?" He is, who he is, and they love him for it. DS just learned to laugh at himself.
