Why Do Men Have To Back Into Parking Spaces?

I know that all men don't do this, but I see a lot of them. They take the time to back into a parking space. I never back into a space. I always pull into it. If I am in a parking lot and I can pull straight through so I can just drive forward out, I will do that. I never back in. What's the point? If you don't back in, you back out. If you back in, you pull out. Are you preparing for a quick getaway? Just curious.

Ooo ooo! Just a guess. Women have better peripheral vision than men -- as a general rule.

Backing-in is easier to spot obstacles then backing-out.

Personally, I pull all the way through! *chuckles*
I think I've lost some of my peripheral vision as I've gotten older, too. Backing out never used to bother me as much in my 20s and 30s as it does now.

I will back in typically at a large event where everyone will leave at the same time-it is likely that someone will let you out easier.

My DH does this too. Not all the time, but when a parking spot is in a tight lot, he'll do it. Our spot in our building has two pillars on the side, so I hate to park there. DH ALWAYS backs in. I like when he does that because it makes it really easy to leave!

I know that here they teach you in Driver training to always back into parking spaces.

It is safer to back into the space and then to drive out. That way you have a better view of pedestrians and vehicles when you are leaving your space.

DH doesn't always back into parking spaces, but he always backs into the garage.

I back in too sometimes. It usually is due to being able to get out quicker.

my answer exactly...reduced risk of accidents that way...

I try to back in as often as I can...I tell the wife that it's good in case we have to make a quick getaway!!

I think it is easier to back in when you have a larger vehicle. I drive a Dodge Ram Quad cab and find it much easier to back it into a space than to pull in forward.

Not for my dh!! He's horrible at backing my van into ANY size parking lot, yet he continues to do it everywhere. Ugh!

So what do you do if you're pulling through and someone was already aiming for that spot? I hate when that happens! Then both spots are gone.

Anyway, DH pulls in straight. I back into parking spots, but not in parking lots like Walmarts and grocery stores. I've never seen anyone back into a space in a parking lot like that. I just like being able to see when I'm ready to leave.

the reduced risk is backing in rather than backing out when you can't see moving cars/pedestrians as well....

he should park at the far end of the lot where he can drive right thru to the other side of the space and be ready to pull right out when leaving...

They taught me when I was a mail carrier to back into spots. They really perferred that we pull through into spots though. The reasoning was that we would of had a good visual of what was in the spot ahead of time. By backing OUT of a space, something could go by after we got in our truck that we may not see.
As for why men always want to back into spots, I don't know!

Both spots aren't gone - you just back up into the first spot and let the other person into the one you were trying to pull forward into.

I don't know why Walmart or grocery stores would be any different. I always back into spots including when I'm at these places (unless I plan on having a lot of groceries to put into the back of my SUV).

I'm certainly impressed with those of you who can "back" into parking spaces, especially the larger vehicles. I drive a little 2 seater Nissan and usually can't find reverse (has 6 blasted forward gears!) in the thing, so I pull all the way forward in parking lots. Won't admit to how many times I've circled Publix waiting for a pull through space to open up.

It's the reverse in our house. I back my truck into a spot 99% of the time. My husband pulls face in 99% of the time.

one of the things I love about my new Chrysler, when I put it in reverse, the side mirrors tilt down so I can follow the lines in the parking space and see the stupid bumps or curbs in spaces that have them...
