"Why Disney again!?"

I tell people I'm going to Florida... I honestly stopped saying too much to people after the "again? Really?" Type responses.... I don't like wasting my time when people are disrespectful about it - and I prefer to be nicer than mean

What matters is we have a good time, my money, my vacation... I honestly don't let my family I on it too much (mostly brother & sister) because apparently if I have extra money I should funnel it to them However my parents bought DVC 20 years ago (which was transferred to me) so the trips are understandable to them. We just introduced part of DHs family to Disney in December. They never said anything but I don't think they understood either (they are super nice) now they want to go with us every year They told us what we did, the fun we had, and the little tips I gave them when we took our kids back for naps really helped them have fun...

And honestly I think deep down they are all a bit jealous

For many people that have never been to Disney World, Disney World is thought of as a once in a lifetime trip; and many people think of it as way more expensive than it actually has to be. I think this may be the reason for the unfair judgement towards those for whom Disney is an annual (or more) trip. It's a shame though because no one should be made to feel that they have to explain or apologize for their vacation of choice.

When we took DS (now 5) and our nephew (on DH's side, 14 at the time) for their first trip a couple years ago, we invited my inlaws to come along. My MIL actually said "I don't know why we'd want to go back or why you're even going, if you've seen it once, you've seen it and that should be enough." (DH was quick to point out to her that the last time she saw it, WDW was only MK and Epcot and they've since added 2 parks!.....they still didn't come along).
And it was a totally different experience for us with the kids than it was when we went for our anniversary prior to having DS. With the kids we rode rides/explored areas we never even went near on our pre-children trip. And half the magic was seeing things through the kids' eyes! This next trip we are staying at a moderate and doing things at a slower pace with a non-park day thrown in to relax and enjoy our resort. We've also gone with DxDP this time instead of DDP, bc for us last time eating was a big part of the enjoyment as well and we'd like to enjoy some things we didn't do last time food-wise. We've always been during Flower & Garden Festival in the past (mainly bc of when Spring Break dates fell) but this year we are going the beginning of June. Our ultimate goal as a family is to "upgrade" our experience in at least one way each trip.....that way it's a new and different experience (at least in some aspect) every time. If people can't understand that when we explain it to them, then I guess they never will understand until they get bitten by the "disney magic" bug themselves.

We have been going for a very long time, since our kids were little. Now we are DVC members, our kids are all grownup but we all still go every year. It is our annual family vacation and we love it! We have made so many wonderful memories that we all cherish. The people that say "again" just don't get it!

While planning our honeymoon at Walt Disney World, my wonderful MIL, almost cried, she couldn't understand WHY we would go some place like that for our honeymoon. She even asked my DH if something was missing from his childhood and if that was why we were going to WDW.

We now are DVC members, and she doesn't bother us about it anymore.

I've visited other cities in the US, lived and traveled in other countries. DH has travelled extensively both for business and vacations. We both like being immersed in the "magic" no passport required.

Our kids, (DS15, DS13, DD9, DS7, DS4, & DD2) haven't really vacationed any where else, except to visit family in other states. Even our DS13 said tonight he is excited about going to Disneyworld again.

While I fully agree Disney is great .........., I would just put out there that also good to expose kids-and ourselves - to other experiences............and I also enjoyed seeing the various parts of our country and the associated natural splendor and "unique" cities............And I can also appreciate a relaxing beach vacation-sometimes good just to recharge, and something about ocean is literally magical for our family............

Just pulled out some of EagleScout's comments because I agree with them, except the highlighted part (for me personally). I love to be on the move on vacations and what bugs me is; I have some people that say, "I would be bored to death going on a cruise"; even when they have never been on one. I have always found something to keep me busy on cruises, even the 15 night Panama Canal cruise on the Wonder.

Too each their own I guess, even if they are positive they could never enjoy it even when they have never tried it!

I've gone to Disney both with family and as a young couple. I feel Disney has so much to offer and with several varying parks/resorts, you can get a taste of many different types of vacations in one. But I can't be the only one who gets the usual, "Why are you going to Disney again!?"....Too many people see Cinderella's Castle only and don't seem to understand all you can do and experience in Disney...

I have not read the whole thread but you are exactly wright ,there is so much to do . This makes me wonder why others may go camping every weekend or go to the same beach house every summer or buy a cottage or camp, because thats what they want to do . I was reading a Disney blog recently and it was saying you could live at Disney for close to a year and there would still be something you have not done . So yes it is way beyond the Castle . I go eyery year and people have stoped asking that question and now just ask when i'll be going back to the House of the Mouse .
I will be going again in June and July my favorite time of year .

We've gone a bunch of times in the past few years, but they were always either all park trips, or a park and marathon trip, stuff like that. We are going to Fort Wilderness in August and hoping to have a different experience. We're also taking a day to spend at Cape Canaveral.

DH and I have discussed when our children are older going to see the different things central Florida has to offer as well! Right now with my youngest being 1.5 and oldest 3.5 spending our stay at WDW just makes sense (between park, pools etc....)

As much as I love Disney I look forward to having our other vacations at National Parks, museums, beaches, mountains etc.... Heck I think I want to do everything!

Only thing I'm unsure about is a cruise though- have this odd fear of being "stuck" on a boat (even though I know they are massive and activity packed) but I have a feeling we will go on one someday!

I got a "But you just went there" by my MIL...it was three years ago. Didn't bring up to her that she's gone to the same condo building on the same beach with her sisters the last 5 or 6 years straight.

Our kids can do all the rides now so things have changed for us. But it's only my kids third time...2008, 2010 and now 2013.

Haha I'm similar. I'm sure a cruise would be a blast and usually feel fine about them, but the Titanic comes on again and I opt for simply flying! Lol

Totally agree! I used to wonder if people thought DH and I were weird for loving Disney so much. But now, who cares! We both grew up going (DH used to live so close for a time that he could see the MK fireworks), when we met it made us love it even more, we honeymooned there (the greatest trip ever!), and we just took our baby boy for the first time. I understand that people may not like the crowds and it may seem to "kiddie" (there are times even we wish there were fewer Meet and Greets and a more entertaining use of those spaces). We're just not the type to sit at a beach all day. We would get bored! And every time we go, there's something new to see

I was walking out of the MK on our last day, pushing my DD's stroller and it was during the Fall when all of the pumpkins are out. On Main Street, as you are leaving, there were a bunch of pumpkins with the words "see ya real soon!" carved out and I just lost it right there. I knew I would be sacrificing whatever I had to so that we could return every year. It is such a special place for us. When I met my DH, he didn't get it. He thought I was silly to talk to strangers on the dis about all things Disney. He was amazed at what I knew about all the resorts, restaurants etc. So last year, we all went to Disney as a family and he has been converted over We almost honeymooned in WDW, but just couldn't bring ourselves to go without the kids! Every year at Thanksgiving, I get the usual "so, where are you staying this year?" humdrum conversation from my family, as they do not get Disney like I do. We Disney fanatics are a special breed, and I am glad to be part of it!

I get that "look" constantly at work. In fact I'm sure when I go to work tomorrow & say we're heading over to Hollywood Studios on Monday for a day trip someone will say "AGAIN"........LOL! Some people understand that for me (I'm 58) and DH (he's 66) we just love going to Disney. We only live 1 1/2 hours away so when he purchased Florida Seasonal APs for us for Christmas we decided we'd do alot of day trips and only one or two onsite trips.

However, like many above when/if people decide they want to go to Disney they ask for advice. Whether or not they take it is their problem.

I'm just happy that I still enjoy all the Disney Magic.

Due to work schedules and some other stuff we have gone the last 4 November s .(As compared to 3 trips the prior 8 years.) The people who make comments are ones who' s vacation choices don 't appeal to us. We enjoy other places too but we love POFQ, the weather is great and we enjoy our schedule of parks/ lunch / pool/ dinner
P.S. We also have enjoyed our trips to Vegas (love the pools,legal sports betting & restaurants) San Francisco and San Diego

I apparently fall into a rare category as most people that know me expect me to go to Disney and are surprised when we vacation somewhere else. In fact when DH and I got married almost everyone was surprised that we weren't going to Disney for our honeymoon. (as much as I thought about doing it with all the stress from the wedding I wanted a week on a beach with a drink)

I'm planning my 3rd trip to DisneyWorld at 30 mostly for my nephew but for me too (was in DisneyLand once too). I've had fun previous two trips, even last time when I was in high school and didn't think I'd have fun at disney and with my parents. I think the reason we don't go all that often is because it's not much of a "vacation." Seem to be on the go, even with trying to add in relax time.

Yeah, it's great fun, but we all work hard at our jobs (as i'm sure you all do). Our idea of a vacation is going to the beach and not having to do a thing for the whole time we're there. We quit doing the amusement parks/big cities a few years ago for vacation, and we just enjoy laying around relaxing. I know we're going to have great fun at our time in Disney, but we'll also miss our laying by the ocean all day (luckily we go to the beach twice a year, so we'll still get one fix).

And wouldn't have it any other way

Just do what you want and how you want it (within limits of reason and decency of course) It's your holiday and your money to spend after all.

Ahh, but that's the thing (and what I try to explain to those that don't "get" Disney)--Walt Disney World is not an amusement park. It's a ginormous resort that, yes, contains four theme parks and two water parks, but also offers many, many opportunities for just laying around relaxing. That's one of our favorite activities at WDW in fact! Sitting by the quiet pool, sipping a drink, surrounded gorgeous themed architecture and landscaping, a dozen terrific restaurants nearby...and if we do feel the urge to do something, plenty of things to do beyond amusement park rides (golf, boating, horseback riding, mini-golf, para-sailing, shows, concerts, you name it). And all for less than it would cost to rent a house at the beach.

Walt Disney World is an amusement park like the Palace of Versailles is a little country home.
