Why did they do this to Cinderella's castle?

I really thought that the castle "medallion", as I call it, was going to do something.
Like change the picture during the show or at odd times during the day.

It does change- it shows pictures of the castles at the parks from around the world.

I think it looks really nice.

There have been lots of rumors that the hand at Epcot is coming down- if you look at any of the pictures/video in the 2005 planning DVD, the hand is gone.

We made our first trip and discovered these boards only within the last year. I'm unfamiliar with the castle being decorated as a cake. Does anyone have a picture they can post? Thanks.

Oops! Never mind. I found the other thread.

My mom and I were there in March the day they put the medallion thing up and I hated it. We had a CM take a picture of us from the bridge to Tomorrowland and I asked the CM what that tacky thing was supposed to be. She seemed really surprised that I didn't like it and said they'd just put it up that day. It looks like one of those plastic locket things you buy a 6 year old little girl to play with to me.

I do like the other trim though - I think it's really pretty and appropriate for the 50th anniversary. The locket thing just isn't as nice and most people can't tell that it supposed to be different castles.

The item everyone keeps referring to as a 'medallion' is in fact a 'mirror' created for the 50th celebration. The scenes change (much like a billboard) and depict different castle scenes from Disney parks around the world. It should be there for the duration of the 50th celbration, which I think is 18 months?

The "medallion" is indeed The Magic Mirror. It changes every little while to show an homage to one of the other Disney Park Castles.

:cheer2:

Really???? Well I do still think it's in bad taste and rather garish. Like one poster stated above it looks like a cameo jewelry piece you give a 6 year old child. I mean would slap one of those things on a Million dollar home....Heck No! If this Mirror type billboard thing is suppose to change to various other castles maybe they should have just put it up somewhere by itself, not on the castle. It just ruins the whole look of the beautiful castle. MAn, I hope it's temporary.

Thanks for your comments all!

I know it's an unpopular opinion but I liked the castle cake. I thought it was cute and imaginative. I was still happy when they changed it back.

I love the new gold spires and golden characters. I think it makes the castle look sparkly and beautiful and I love how special it is to have some of the less well-known but still beloved characters commemorated (Flounder!!!!!).

I HATE that darn mirror. I think it looks tacky. I don't care what the other castles look like. I want to look at the castle I'm standing in front of.

I loved the Mickey Hand and "2000" when we were there for the Millennium celebration. I hate that they changed the wording to "Epcot". It made the "2000" salute less special. DH heard a pretty convincing rumor that the whole thing is being removed early next year so that is something to hope for.

I liked the water tower with the Mickey ears at MGM and always thought it was a perfect symbol. I don't like the big sorcerer Mickey hat even though I love Sorcerer Mickey and that's the symbol they always use for MGM even though the super-cute water tower is still there! :(

The Medallion ruins the forced percpective of the Castle...

Great comments! I hate the darn mirror too, you're right it does look tacky, it looks out of place. LOL! I don't care about other castles either...Why ruin a good thing???

I Hope you're right, about the EPCOT do-hickey on the sphere. I hope that they take it down, it's too carnival like. I love the old space earth at night when it used to illuminate. Take down that wand! AGGHHH!

Yes, the sorcerer is an eyesore and is very tacky. Take it down. Your right MGM has the great water tower and that should be there symbol for MGM not a sorcerer's hat.

Thanks!

Does anyone have any recent pictures of the castle?

Here's a small one from www.allearsnet.com.

You can probably find more on the site.

Amen to the birthday cake castle!! WHAT AN EYESORE THAT WAS. Looked like a huge bottle of PEPTO BISMOL exploded on it. :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

I will see the castle in just 3 SHORT DAYS so I have no opinion on the new decorations, but I can say TAKE THAT MESS OFF OF SPACESHIP EARTH!!! It was so much more awesome just being plain.

And lets not forget that STUPID BIG OL HAT blocking our beloved Chinese Theater (GMRide) at MGM.

I AGREE!! LESS IS MORE!!! (and better IMHO) :rolleyes1

Bamagal!!! same here can't wait to see it on Friday

The castle looks gorgeous, and so does the medallion, which shows the pictures of the other Disney Castles.... the "Happiest Celebration on Earth" kicks off until May 5th and runs through September of 2006.

If you see the castle with the medallion up close, you will realize that it is indeed gorgeous and in no way takes away from the beauty of the castle. In fact, I wish the castle would remain this way.

I've seen it up close - still hate it. Love the rest of it though.

I also hate the Sorcerer's hat. It would be cute somewhere else - but not blocking the Chinese Theatre - you can hardly even appreciate the theatre anymore.

The Epcot thing - I can take it or leave it - it doesn't bother me as much as the other stuff.

:rotfl: Eh, it was different, huh? ;) It certainly was a topic of conversation!

I still haven't gotten used to the BAH in MGM/Disney studios. :earseek: That I just don't like. The cake castle wasn't as bad cause I knew it was temporary. :teeth:

Wasn't sure about the Epcot ball being added too?? I am used to it now, I guess...Anyone remember when they added the Mickey hand & wand?????

Absolutely correct!...That gaint cake thing was horrible!

So far, it doesn't look too bad to me, but I will be there in 23 days to from my own view, and of course, take LOTS of Pictures! :rolleyes1

Sorry but I saw it 2 weeks ago and hated the Medallion, liked the other decorations but the Medallion was just too much..

Now, the birthday cake is just horrendous.[/QUOTE]

I hated that the one time I went as an adult was with the cake castle! I wanted pics of it normal...And, to top that off, when I went they weren't through transforming it so it was all cake and then normal on one side - not too pretty.

I hope the castle looks great in June! Cant' wait to see it.

So, to tie this in with another thread if you don't mind...do you think THIS mirror has anything to do with that clue on the DIS home page (www.wdwinfo.com)?? Just a thought.

Mirrors, mirrors everywhere, not a one to use – catching on yet?
